The Deli’s Emerging Kansas City Artist of 2012: #1 – Radkey

Posted on:

What do you get when three teenage boys decide to start making music together? Well, you usually aren’t lucky enough to get anything like Radkey. Fortunately, the Kansas City music scene is. The three brothers—Dee (19), Isaiah (17), and Solomon Radke (15)—hail from St. Joseph and have been creating music catchy enough to be received by a broad audience and heavy enough to be affirmed by more experienced rockers and punkers alike. Though the brothers have only been playing music for 3 years, they portray a mastery of their instruments and a deep understanding of their influences, which include bands like The Misfits, The Ramones, Bad Brains, and Jimi Hendrix.

Radkey has found an unbelievable amount of success in its short amount of time as a band: the trio has performed at the Afro-Punk Festival in Brooklyn (also including the likes of Erykah Badu and Reggie Watts), recorded a video at the Wreck Room in Brooklyn (founded by Adrian Grenier of HBO’s Entourage), and will be performing an official showcase at SXSW in March, as well as others (including Kansas City’s MidCoast Takeover showcase). Congratulations to Radkey for being The Deli’s Emerging Kansas City Artist of 2012!

Radkey is:
Dee Radke – vocals, guitar
Isaiah Radke – bass, vocals
Solomon Radke – drums

Check out Radkey’s Daytrotter session, which was just released today!

Radkey has a number of performances coming up, the next of which is tomorrow, Thursday, January 31, at Eighth St. Taproom in Lawrence, with Bloodbirds and Ponyboy (the band will be recording a music video at this event). The boys will also appear at The Riot Room this Sunday, February 3, with The Growlers and UZIS. Radkey will release a 7” on Friday, March 1 at Replay Lounge with Stiff Middle Fingers. If you’re in Austin in March, the trio will be playing an official SXSW showcase as well as others (including MidCoast Takeover at Shangri-La).

Stream: Vinyl Williams, “Inner Space”

Posted on:

Dreamy soundscapes, experimental structures, and surrealist psychedelia swirl around in this single from musical and visual auteur Vinyl Williams. “Inner Space”, like the rest of the collection of tunes off the recently released LP, Lemniscate, is other-worldly, with nearly angelic layers of vocals and trailing effects that descends into chaotic Bowie-esque wanderings. A more cerebral journey than most, this record requires an open mind and more than a few listens to sink in. A satisfying daydream that feels like an acid trip, but a pleasant one nonetheless. Vinyl Williams plays Los Globos with HOTT MT on Wednesday, February 20. – Jacqueline Caruso

The Deli Nashville’s Weekend Itinerary

Posted on:

It’s a big weekend for music around town, so prime your liver and prepare to dance because Music City is living up to its name.

Friday…

Tonight the gig to beat is East Nashville Underground, taking over The East Room yet again. Tonight’s lineup is filled to the brim, featuring:

Vinyl Thief
All Them Witches
Alanna Royale
Machines Are People Too (headliner)
Magnolia Sons (headliner)
Cult Logic
DJ Rate (from Boom Bap)
Doors open at 9 pm. Get there early because this one will sell out!

On the other side of the river at The Stone Fox, Glossary are taking the stage with Telegraph Canyon. We recently had the chance to catch up with Glossary frontman Joey Kneiser and will give you the rundown on that next week, but seeing them live tonight would be a fantastic way to warm up to that.

Saturday…

More ENU! Still going strong at The East Room, the Undergrounders kick off their day show at 1 pm with a steady flow of beer, bands, and brunch. The daytime lineup runs until 8 pm and will feature:

The Static Trees
Jon Byrd
Joshua
Waterfall Wash
KS Rhoads (headliner)
Colorfeels (headliner)
Frances & The Foundation
Hanzelle

And once the day show wraps up, the jams run right into the nighttime show. Doors are at 9 pm for the second half of Saturday at East Nashville Underground, and the show will run way past bedtime. Rounding out the winter ENU experience wil be:

Golden Spurs
COIN
Tesla Rossa
James Wallace & The Naked Light (headliner)
MOON TAXI (headliner)
The Wans
DJ That Guy! (Kory Schalm)

Sunday

Depending on how loud you want to get, the local music scene is giving you some options for the death rattle of your weekend. The Exit/In has Western Medicine, along with Psychic Ills and Cloudland Canyon.
Western Medicine are up first, so show up early.

On the quieter (yet still bad ass) side of the rock spectrum, you can find Anna Haas in the 12th & Porter lounge in all of her fiery, redheaded glory, reminding us that being a singer/songwriter in Nashville, Tennessee isn’t all cowboy boots and cover songs.

Sparxx debuts video for “Mod” + plays The Rock Shop on 02.20

Posted on:

Bushwick’s rising dreampoppers Sparxx are debuting today on our channels the video for the heavenly track “Mod.” Shot & Edited by Danny Krug, Co-Directed by Danny and Heather Sparx, with styling by Nadia Tulin, the video was bravely filmed on location in Bushwick (ugliest/hippest neighborhood in the world?), with concert footage from local venue, The Lab. Band sonic guru Justin Matthews and Heather also remixed the track from the original version, giving it additional punch and sheen, matching it more closely to the video. The story of “Mod” is told through Heather’s passionate vocals, Justin’s synth and guitar textures, and a thoroughly rockin’ beat. Following a timeless script, hot boy hits on girl – but Heather asks if you could simply slow down for a moment and “take a break with me”. A breath was taken, now what?

Weekend Warrior, February 15 – 17

Back at it again with their brand of fuzz-driven sludge-punk, Pissed Jeans continue with their common thread of self-depreciation that has placed them somewhat on the more cynical end of the spectrum than their Sub Pop counterparts the Postal Service. Sure, they’ve grown up a bit since 2009’s King of Jeans, but the spirit of the disenfranchised can still be heard in frontman Matt Korvette’s bellowing howls. Does maturation mean they’ve gone soft? No. Not in the least. The new album Honeys is proof that maturity isn’t always industry code for a leveling of intensity. Accompanying the familiarity of lamenting screams, the thunderous sound battle of bass versus guitar versus drums remains in tandem. Be sure that you’re a part of the fanfare for the King’s return tonight to celebrate their new release at Underground Arts with support from decibel-pushing brethrens Leather and Lantern. Lady Lamb the Beekeeper releases “Ripley Pine” + plays Knit on 02.23

Posted on:

Aly Spaltro’s sultry voice carries through her new album, “Ripley Pine,” at times sounding like Neko Case or a young PJ Harvey. Spaltro, the gifted songwriter behind Lady Lamb the Beekeeper, wrote the album in Maine while working at a used DVD store, later recording it in her then-new Brooklyn apartment. Floating between folk, rock, and psych elements, the new record shows a diverse musical and emotional depth to the 23-year-old songwriter, through expert layering of melodies and metaphors. “Ripley Pine” will be released on February 19, followed by a show at the Knitting Factory on the 23rd. – Devon Antonetti

Chalk & Numbers announces “Parade” EP + plays Mercury on 02.20

Posted on:

Indie-pop duo Chalk and Numbers showcase a soft spot for bubble gum pop in the new single “Boy” (streaming below), which combines a refreshingly stripped down sound with melodic elements inspired by the 60’s mainstream pop. The Brooklyn natives conjoins Sable Yong’s refined and tempered voice with Andrew Pierce’s composed melodies within a range of memorable melodies and light tones. Their new EP will be released on March 12th – you can see them at The Mercury Lounge on 02.20 with The Suzan and Earthy Babes (both also Brooklyn based). – Tina Aita
