Pure Bathing Culture Place 2nd in The Deli Portland’s Best of 2012 Poll for Emerging Artists

Posted on:

Pure Bathing Culture and their dreamy pop ballads have earned praise from the Portland music community over the past year and it’s no wonder as to why. Their hazy, lighthearted songs perpetuate feelings of exuberance through warm guitar tones and endearing vocal melodies that can bring warmth to the dreariest overcast day. Congratulations on placing second in our Band of the Year poll, your soothing sounds deserve the recognition. – Benjamin Toledo

Onuinu Places 3rd in The Deli Portland’s Best of 2012 Poll for Emerging Artists

Posted on:

I don’t think there’s a band in town with as much groove and electronic sensibility as Onuinu. His songs are rich with driving rhythms, synthesized melodies and contagious vocal hooks that could bring most anyone to dance with a complete loss of inhibition. He’s garnered a significant amount of attention over the course of the past year, and with beats like his it’s obvious that his audience will continue to expand in 2013. Congrats on placing third in the polls, Onuinu, keep up the great work. – Benjamin Toledo

Pleasure Curses @ Velvet Lounge Review

Posted on:

(by Natan Press) Jan. 12, Pleasure Curses played their first gig at the Velvet Lounge to a packed room. The crowd head-bobbed, foot-tapped and drunken-jiggled through the entire set by the electro-punk duo of Jahn Teetsov and Evan Grice. Pleasure Curses is an example of the serendipitous circumstances that surround so many successful acts.

The Virginia natives first met in music camp as children, and reconnected after Jahn returned from college in Manchester, England (Evan is still attending JMU), absorbing the Madchester sound while playing in local bands. The young Pleasure Curses do the older Brits justice, mimicking the Northern sounds of the decade before they were born with the control and precision of true admirers. Harnessing the powers of a Korg, a Kaoss padd and the Abelton music sequencer, Pleasure Curses self-recorded their first EP Stripes.

For the show, Evan deftly handled the devices while playing his bass. Jahn’s voice channels Bernard Sumner, though at this point he’s a bit uncomfortable playing guitar while singing in a live setting. Despite this confession, Jahn’s an able frontman, speaking comfortably to the crowd, and singing as if well practiced. One assumes it won’t take long for him to add the guitar to his performance. Pleasure Curses is also looking for a drummer, though they’re legitimately worried that a third member could disturb their already effective chemistry. If the crowd at their first show is any judge, they don’t need to change a thing, and if they do want to increase their stage presence, they’ll have no difficulty finding willing participants.

Stream: The Lonely Wild, “Buried in the Murder”

Posted on:

“Buried in the Murder,” the first single of their recently announced debut LP, The Sun As it Comes, due out April 2, is an epic tale, both lyrically and musically. What begins as a seemingly simple, charming, indie folk tune quickly grows into a dark, twisted, bombastic tribal anthem. The melancholic acoustic traded for aggressive, wailing electric riffs, and the restrained vocals exchanged for shouts, all with the constant underpinning of mixed percussion that sounds like the purgatory of a chain gang. This is mature storytelling executed with the all the epic atmosphere of a film score. Equal parts romance and testosterone, this song soars as it aches. If this is what we should expect from the rest of the album, then it’s sure to be a year-end favorite. The Lonely Wild are gearing up for a spring tour, but you can catch them at the Echo on February 8 in support of The Little Ones. – Jacqueline Caruso

Where Is My Mind?: DRGN King’s Dominic Angelella

Posted on:

Philly’s own DRGN King grew from hours of late night recording sessions with guitarist/singer/songwriter Dominic Angelella and hip-hop producer Brent “Ritz” Reynolds (The Roots, Wale, Mac Miller, etc.) to a full-blown rock band. It feels like forever ago when the fruits of their labor first began to surface, but then disappeared again. However, we have remained patient. Well, the wait is finally over because the group’s debut full-length album Paragraph Nights is officially out today via Bar None Records. We had a chance to discuss with Angelella about the evolution of the new record, his music education, his hometown Baltimore music roots, and much, much more. You can read our interview with the red-haired, Jesus look-alike guitarist HERE

Artist to Watch: Sir Sly

Posted on:

Shrouded in mystery until very recently, the LA trio known as Sir Sly, are dishing out full bodied electro-pop that hinges on the darker side. The video for the single, “Gold” is a true reflection of the music – slick, sexy and beautiful, but haunting. It packs all the epic punch of what could be the closing credits of a new Bond film. With a vocal quality and production style reminiscent of Foster the People, it’s no wonder rumors were flying that the unknown trio was a side project of the group. The tunes on The Ghost 7” – out February 11 – combine the swagger of hip-hop with catchy pop melodies; a combination proving this band is one to watch. Having already secured a Wednesday Residency at the Echo in February, their local status will soon be history. – Jacqueline Caruso
