Brooklyn Experimental Electronic: The Mast

Posted on:

Combining a rumbling, metallic percussive undercurrent with passionate vocals and mysterious lyrics, Brooklyn electronic duo The Mast‘s lastest release "Nuclear Dragon" is both hypnotic and inviting. In this track – available as a free download on their bandcamp – their exotic psychedelic journey weaves through a land of turtle bays, grazing elephants and dragons, where dreams made of bronze and stone are frozen under the sun (but still alive within). Propulsive tribal patterns are woven within dramatic vocal placement that rise in cascading swells as this story unfolds. The Mast will be appearing at Glasslands on January 29. – Dave Cromwell

NYC Progressive Indie Rock: No Shoes

Posted on:

New York needs a band like this. While Chicago has its share of insane math musician geniuses on Thrill Jockey, NY isn’t known for this kind of showmanship. With No Shoes, you get all this along with a determined interest in such topics as Werewolves and honeycombs. The quartet can play their asses off, while making sure you’re having filthy fun at the same time. Check out their half of a split EP made with Basal Gang. on their Bandcamp. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Review – “Boots” by Dangeresque

Posted on:

Got Boots?  You oughta –

The latest EP from a previously-Deli-covered Dangeresque is surfingly-good fun; featuring the irresistible ("Winnie the Pooh"), the jam  ("#2 Hit Jam"), the perfectly-country-fied fit ("Ice Cubes and Alcohol") and the comfort-food folksy ("Noah’s Lullaby").  Though it contains bits and pieces of country-styled licks and conceits, this one is more Roots than Redneck.  And at 2 bucks, a steal.

Revisited Video: Black Cab Sessions USA – Philadelphia

Posted on:

When Black Cab Sessions came to Philly, local Twitter accounts were all abuzz, but as time went by, we just never seemed to hear much more about their visit except for a teaser trailer. And when the session finally saw the light of day, U.S. viewers weren’t able to access it. Well, we were reminded this morning about the Philly Black Cab Sessions, which is filling us with so much pride as we watch it over and over again. It’s Monday morning, and we thought that you might need a pick-me-up too. Check out some of the familiar faces of Philly’s music scene talking about the city that we all love so much with performances by local favorites Meg Baird, Grandchildren, “Reading Rainbow”/Bleeding Rainbow, Tone Trump, Freeway, Plastic Little and Spank Rock as well as visiting artists The Morning Benders and Rain Machine (a.k.a. Kip Malone) HERE! Good morning, and enjoy!

Dopestroke Providing Fun Aggression at KFN Jan. 27

Posted on:

Dopestroke started off playing raucous, tradition-bound hardcore, and they’ve never swerved from that formula, but don’t let that deter you – they’re fun, and they sound like they’re having fun in every one of their songs. Aggressive group vocals abound, as do crusty lyrics about negativity, depression, and society’s ills, which are somehow transformed into a good time for all. Take a listen to "Social Loathing (I.II.III.)" for a primer on what they’re all about – any band that delivers their screeds in movements are alright by me. This night promises to be a truly aggressive one, with Hound and GA$H rounding out the locals, and Illegals coming to us from Pittsburgh. Kung Fu Necktie, 1201 Frankford Ave., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Alyssa Greenberg

The Menzingers Opening for Hot Water Music at the E Factory Jan. 26

Posted on:

Scranton transplants turned Philly staples The Menzingers will provide the undercard for post-hardcore veterans Hot Water Music tonight at the Electric Factory. The local quartet released an unsung hero of records, On the Impossible Past, early last year on Epitaph Records. Formulating pop-punk anthems that exhibit snarly vocal grit with guitar and percussion providing clean controlled continuity while always prepared to launch a sonic assault when the emotional fire is ready to rage. Electric Factory, 421 N. 7th St., 8:30pm, $27, All Ages – Michael Colavita

Weekend Warrior, January 25 – 27

Yeah, it’s effin’ cold out! That’s why this Saturday you can find a whole evening’s worth of entertainment all under one roof at Kung Fu Necktie. The night will kickoff with a solo set of panty-dropping vocals from Sun Airway’s Jon Barthmus. Then prepare to be engulfed in sonic waves when Nightlands, a.k.a. The War on Drugs’ Dave Hartley, hits the stage to share some new tunes from his latest album Oak Island. (You can check out our recent interview with Hartley HERE.) And you don’t have to leave after his performance because you can either stay downstairs for Sugar Town’s 12th Anniversary and benefit show for Ladyfest Philly with Radiator Hospital, Bike Crash and Batty, or head upstairs and pretend like you are at a house show with Catnaps, Roof Doctor, Tutlie and Incorporated Village of the Ghost.
