The Deli Philly’s Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner: Thinking Machines

Posted on:

Thinking Machines had spent the last two years working on their latest album Extension Chords, which was released last month, and as we recently learned from the indie rock four-piece, there is plenty of more music coming from that time they’ve spent locked away in the studio. They also wrapped up 2012 on a high note with a victory in our Featured Artist(s) Poll. You can check out our humorous interview with bassist/vocalist Cody Brown and guitarist/vocalist Nate King HERE.

West by West Campus jumps into Free Week

Posted on:

Heard of West By West Campus?  It’s the only music festival in Austin’s university district (ie., around 21st and Rio Grande streets); coming your way this February 23rd.  The venues are student housing co-operatives, and this year they plan on 6 stages, each blinging with our best local indie talent.  We’ll have more details as the day draws nigh –

So somebody in their ranks figured that one day in Feb. just wasn’t enough – Now they’re joining the Free Week festivities by hosting their own gig tonight at The Parish.  With no less of a lineup than SuperLikeBike, Growl, The Gorgeous Hands, Bipolar Bears, and The Nouns.

And did we mention that it’s FREE?  No?

And Hey, it’s FREE!  Woot.

The new album from Terrible Spaceship is a truly unique experience that combines old time radio, jazz, electronic, trip hop, and more. Invaders 1938, their debut album, tells the story of Orson Wells’ War of The World and the Mercury Theater company, but tells it through beat and soundscapes that will make you dance. The seven-piece band calls it "Ambient synthetic horror pop" and it will be interesting to see how the band performs this live.

You can catch find out for yourselves on Jan. 5th at Lincoln Hall as Terrible Spaceship is joined by Any Kind and Lamp to celebrate the release of Invaders 1938.

Artists on Trial: Rev Gusto

Posted on:
Rev Gusto is fairly new to the local music scene, recently releasing its debut EP. The energetic and revivalistic garage pop Rev Gusto creates complements much of the music in the local scene while also putting its own stamp on it. With several upcoming shows, including a fundraiser for MidCoast Takeover, this 5-piece group introduces itself and tells us what to expect.

The Deli: Down and dirty: 1 sentence to describe your music. What is it?

Rev Gusto: Indie garage pop music that is perfect for warm nights and backyard BBQs.

The Deli: Tell us about your debut self-titled EP. For those who haven’t gotten it yet, what can they expect?

Rev:Our new EP has five tracks. They showcase a diverse variety of tunes, catchy hooks, and guitar riffs.

The Deli: What does supporting local music mean to you?

Rev: It means going out to late shows, having a good time, and loving the music our city has to offer.

The Deli: Who are your favorite “local” musicians right now?

Rev: We have a lot of favorite’s including The ACB’s, The Sluts, She’s A Keeper, and Zach Jackson & the Funky Few.

The Deli: Who are your favorite not-so-local musicians right now?

Rev: We decided that we each have one choice. So here they are in no particular order: The Wave Pictures, Ike Reilly, The Flaming Lips, The Kooks, and Allo’ Darlin.

The Deli: What is your ultimate fantasy concert bill to play on?

Rev: We would love to be on a bill with any one of Jack White’s projects, The Black Keys, and The Flaming Lips. With an encore including Paul McCartney and The (reincarnated) Ramones.

The Deli: Would you rather spend the rest of your life on stage or in the recording studio?

Rev: On stage; no question. Our favorite part is feeding off the energy of playing a show and putting it into our music.

The Deli: A music-themed Mount Rushmore. What four faces are you putting up there and why?

Rev: Bob Dylan, best American songwriter of the 20th century. Lou Reed, who made it possible for garage bands like us to exist. J Dilla, because he’s the beat master. Otis Redding, one word: soul.

The Deli: All right, give us the rundown. Where all on this big crazy web can you be found?

Rev: We have a plethora of web pages. We can be found on Facebook, Twitter @revgusto, Soundcloud, Reverb Nation, and we just recently joined iTunes.

The Deli: Always go out on a high note. Any last words of wisdom for the Deli audience?

Rev: Our main goal is to enjoy ourselves and do what we love. We love to see people out to have fun along with us. We hope to be doing this for a while, so we hope The Deli can handle our meat.

Rev Gusto is:
Jerry Frederick
Sam Frederick
Quinn Hernandez
Peter Beatty
Shaun Crowley

There are plenty of opportunities to see Rev Gusto perform in the very near future. They’ll be playing tonight, January 3, at recordBar and tomorrow, January 4, at Jackpot. On Monday, January 28 they’ll be at Czar. Rev Gusto was also announced as one of the performers for the MidCoast Takeover fundraiser show on Saturday, February 16 at The Brick, along with Not A Planet and David Hasselhoff on Acid.

Lazyeyes wins Psych Rock category in the Best of NYC 2012 Open Submissions

Posted on:

Brooklyn Lazyeyes does the shoegaze thing right. There is a spacious ambiance to the guitars and appealing cathedral qualities on the vocals. Solid straightforward percussion creates an unadorned anchor for all of the other cerebral qualities brought in by voices and guitars. Their lush melodies descend on us straight from the 7th heaven. The overall feel (and progression) brings to mind classic mid-90’s dreampop, one of the true golden ages of indie rock. If the streaming single "Wait" had been put out back then (and had been made in the UK) this band might have made the cover of NME (or good old Melody Maker). The band topped the list of Psych Rock/Dream Pop artists who submitted to be considered for our Year End Poll for emerging NYC artists, with an average rating of 8.33. See them live at Glasslands on February 1. – Dave Cromwell

Eastern Hollows places 2nd in Psych Rock Year End Poll NYC Submissions

Posted on:

With their EP “Days Ahead” released in July and their single “Summer’s Dead” out just a few weeks ago in December, 2012 was a busy year for Brooklyn based psych rock band Eastern Hollows. Meandering guitars, cymbal heavy drumming, and languid vocals give their music a dreamy edge reminiscent of classic shoegaze sounds with a refreshing indie twist. The band placed second in the Psych Rock/Dream Pop submissions for our Best of NYC 2012 Poll with an average rating of 8.16. See them live at Glasslands on January 7. – Lucy Sherman

The New Kinetics “Reverie”

Posted on:

December saw the release of The New Kinetics second album, In Stereo, produced by John Vanderslice at Tiny Telephone studio in San Francisco. The band’s 60’s-influenced rock-and-roll blew off the roof of the Casbah in San Diego at the CD release party on December 2. The record was put out independently by the band on vinyl, and it’s a wonderful thing. Highlights are: “Be Mine,” “Tear Down Your Idols,” and "Reverie", the last of which placed #1 on Aural Gravy Records’ Best Local Songs of 2012 list. – David Milano

Artist to Watch: Adult Film

Posted on:

Adult Film is the current project of crooner and guitarist, Adrian Rodriguez, drummist Trevor Hunnicutt, bass and vocalist Ozzy Carmona, and keyboardist Chris Holguin. Individually, each Los Angeleno is currently involved with other musical ventures, which played to their advantage during the collaborative process, as Adult Film succeeded in creating a solitary sound consisting of their distinctive experiences, musical stylings, and influential derivatives from artists such as Weezer, Radiohead, and the groove of transcendental 60s harmonies. Together, the quartet has produced a variation of tracks, which manage to harmonize the simple, yet complicated principals of human nature and daily survival as they stand within today’s social boundaries and affairs of the heart. "Love Prescription" does well to evoke the overall tone of the bass ladened tracks, walking the audience through the trials of a dissolving relationship accompanied by Spanish influenced guitar riffs and distant vocals. Albeit it head-phone friendly music, one will never truly appreciate Adult Film unless having seen the group perform live. Stage presence is no stranger to any of the band’s members, and though they each command attention to their particular instrument, they masterfully come together to deliver an energetic and bewitching performance. An official live EP along with documentation is in the works for January 2013 with a tour to follow. – Anais Barajas
