Sun Airway’s lush arrangements and massive textures of sound will be filling the beloved second floor of Johnny Brenda’s this Saturday night. It feels like it’s been a bit since I’ve heard Jon Barthmus’ smooth, breathy baritone live. And hopefully Klip Collectives’ Ricardo Rivera will be manning the new lights at JB’s to bring the band’s dreamy tunes to an otherworldly place. Sun Airway will also be joined by Brooklyn’s Historics and Cruiser, the sweet indie pop project from Andy States, so you have good reasons to get there early and spend the whole night. Best of NYC 2012 – Submission Results for INDIE ROCK
Indie, indie… what an exquisite word! These days so many bands call themselves "indie rock" even if they sound nothing like indie rock (before we ranked this category we had to filter out all the songwriters and straight rock bands who tried to re-brand themselves as "indie" – WE CAUGHT YOU!). Of course, the word originates from "independent" – not "Indian" like your clueless friends often assume – but it’s been used since the 80’s to describe "non-mainstream" rock music (and record labels). Think tense and/or dark and/or experimental-ish mostly guitar based rock. Needless to say, in the late aughts Indie became huge, and many NYC bands (paradoxically signed to majors) like Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Interpol had a crucial role in bringing this genre to the masses.

VUM: Stream, “Back to Sleep”
VUM, the duo of Jennifer Pearl and Christopher Badger, have released a new single, “Back to Sleep,” in anticipation of their forthcoming full length album titled, Blood Horses. This track leans more towards their trance-inducing darkwave side. The droning, repetitive arpeggiated bass line that runs throughout the entire track acts like one of those black and white hypnotic swirls, subliminally calling upon your higher senses. All the while, Pearl’s vocals woo like a deadly siren calling you deeper into their mystical universe. “Back to Sleep” is the perfect track to tease the full album. Much like previous releases, VUM manages to create music that can be left on repeat without realizing you’ve been lost in it for hours. See them live tonight as they join 9 other ‘Bands to Watch’ for 2013 at the Echo as part of the Origami Vinyl-curated FOMO Fest, which I’ve recently been told translates to “Fear of Missing Out.” I recommend purchasing tickets online ahead of time, as this is sure to be a packed out event. – Jacqueline Caruso
