NYC Year End Poll – Electronic Submission Results: AVAN LAVA takes 3rd place

Posted on:

On a Deli-organized June show at Williamsburg’s Cameo, a club on North 6th Street, local band AVAN LAVA sent the crowd into an absolute frenzy when they launched into their summer 2012 anthem, “It’s Never Over.” Formed by Fischerspooner multi-instrumentalists Michael “Le Chev” Cheever and Ian Pai, with new heart-throb singer Tom “TC” Hennes, AVAN LAVA blasted purple lasers and confetti over the audience, whilst on-stage dancers shimmied and shook in celebration of the band’s unabashed upbeat electro-pop. Mixing Prince with Rick Astley and Wham!, things never veer into irony, rather the entire affair feels both arty and jubilant in a way not often experienced in a live setting. – Brian Chidester

The Doubleclicks Depart on West Coast Tour

Posted on:

As The Doubleclicks, Portland based sisters Aubrey and Angela Webber pick up a cello and ukelele and sing ballads that cover a range of geek culture. They cover grammar, video games, trekkies, and even PDX pirates. There is also meeting boys at con, the worst superpowers ever, and a velociraptor with self-esteem issues. The track "Imposter", on Song Fu is a response to a song writing challenge in which the girls created a story about a sad robot lost in space. What could be a more fitting way to share their EP, Chainmail and Cello, than to play a tour of shows inside West Coast comic shops? Tonight they play for a nerd herd at our own comic headquarters, Things From Another World. D20! – Brandy Crowe

Butcher Boy: Folk and post-rock meet and like each other

Posted on:

Butcher Boy’s music sounds like where it’s from: Maine. Big, post-rock soundscapes combine with banjoes and vocals that sometimes reside way up in singer Pete Swegart’s sinuses. The twangy guitar, when you apply a slide to it and stretch out the note, creates the type of long-form texture we might get from a band like Sigur Ros—another group from a snowy, beautiful, and vast landscape. Maine’s country/folk music meets a reverbed description of Maine’s backwoods and dirt roads.

Check out their brand new album, Shoreless Seas, released December 21st. – Geoff Noble

Conversation with Enemies Opening for Hospitality at JB’s Jan. 6

Posted on:

Is it possible to have a meaningful musical discourse, while still maintaining an air of lightness? Conversations with Enemies answer the call with a resounding affirmation. While Josh Craft’s distinct conversational vocal style is a common thread that binds one song to the next; the band as a whole combines forces to deliver a complete and succinct final product. Vocals that naturally unite into fortified sonic agreement. A bass and drum pairing that pushes for progress while still locking in stability and guitar that plays close to the vest with a jaded edge – all this with horns punctuating the plot lines. Conversations with Enemies will open for Brooklyn-based pop-outs and Merge Records signees Hospitality, who place Amber Papini’s soft yet authoritative vocals amid a vast upbeat musical environment. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $12, 21+ – Michael Colavita

The Extraordinaires Staying Focused at KFN Jan. 5

Posted on:

Some may qualify the zany musical productions of the Jay Purdy-led Extraordinaires as quirky; however, sometimes creativity doesn’t mold itself into a common shape. Rather than attempting to forcefully place The Extraordinaires into the confines of genre, Purdy and crew focus their creative energies into developing music which is hinged on sound fundamentals – interesting narrative-driven lyrics matted on tight instrumental backdrops. These musical snapshots may change their focus at unexpected times, but the quality remains spot on. Join them tonight at KFN with the soulfully funky twang of You Do You, the punk-rock specialties of Business Model featuring Peter Helmis (of the recently departed Algernon Cadwallader), and electronic outfit Math the Band. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 7:30pm, $8, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Show announcement: Sangha Studios Showcase at recordBar, 1.5.13

Posted on:

Tonight, local production company Sangha Studios will hold its own music showcase at recordBar. The show kicks off at 7 pm with a special dinner performance by Stacked!. At 9 pm, performances will begin from A Thousand Dreadful Things, followed by Run With It, and Claire and the Crowded Stage. All three bands will be releasing EPs at the show.

A Thousand Dreadful Things is a seven-piece band born out of the musical performance of Titus Andronicus last summer at The Living Room. Composer Eryn Bates and the band sets Shakespearean language to lush, theatrical tunes. The group will release its debut self-titled EP at the show.

Run With It is also releasing a debut self-titled EP. This energetic party rock four-piece has a groovy, crisp blues sound while incorporating R&B and soul into its repertoire.

Claire Adams and eight multi-talented musicians make up the collective Claire and the Crowded Stage. Adam’s smooth voice weaves in and out of a unique brand of quirky, intricate music. The group will be releasing its second EP, Technicolor

The show will be hosted by The Deli KC’s editor Michelle Bacon. Sangha Studios is committed to help showcase local bands through reasonably-priced recording options, as well as music lessons and for-rent rehearsal spaces. The Deli KC and Midwest Music Foundation strive to help musicians further their craft through several different methods, and we’re happy to work with other local groups—like Sangha—with these same goals in mind.

Tickets are $7 at the door or can be purchased at the link here.

The Hugs Play a Free Show at Rontoms 1.6

Posted on:

Rontoms might be the fanciest garage a band could possibly play in, which is fitting because one of the most popular garage pop-rock bands in Portland, The Hugs, will be playing their weekly free show this Sunday. The Hugs have been around since 2007 and have gained popularity and high praise since. Their sound is grounded in early century garage sound but adds very clean vocals and specific spacy guitar effects to bring their music to the forefront of today’s scene. They bring a ton of energy and mix it with psychedelic undertones to keep the listener interested and in a good mood. Add in a steady rhythm section and you’ve got the perfect formula for great beer drinking music. – Colin Hudson
