Open Submissions 2012 Top Five: Fake Furs

Posted on:

Abrasive, grunge-influenced, but with a pop accessibility, Fake Furs, are an electro-tinged, pop/rock band. They make music so loud, aggressive and gritty, you don’t even notice they’re a bassless band. Emotional and glittery enough to appeal to the fourteen year-old girl inside you, but modern and danceable enough to call forth the grown woman who wants to party so hard she feels fourteen again. – Jacqueline Caruso

Open Submissions 2012 Top Five: The Morning Birds

Posted on:

The Morning Birds make anthems for a glass-half-full lifestyle. Intricate, layered pop that compels you to take the journey with them. Surrender to This, their most recent release, is a mixed-bag of sixties psych-folk, modern day electro-pop, laid-back hip-hop rhythms, and reggae swagger. This is music for those looking for a good time. – Jacqueline Caruso

New Video: “Late Night Special” (HotBox Session) – Ground Up & The Lawsuits

Posted on:

Hip hop collective Ground Up and folk rockers The Lawsuits teamed up this past summer to perform at PW’s Concerts in the Park and hit the road on a mini-tour. Well, both acts liked how it sounded so much that they took it to the studio to record a live session. Check out the Bucks County buddies rockin’ out “Late Night Special” in another HotBox Session, which took place at legendary Sigma Sound Studios while the HotBox guys were building their new studio.

NYC Year End Poll – Hip Hop Submission Results: Hot Sugar at #1

Posted on:

For anyone who wishes they could enjoy Neon Indian but is maybe looking for something that’s a bit more … I don’t know… lo-fi and crazy, then Hot Sugar’s ‘Muscle Milk EP’ is probably up your alley. A blend of all manner of exotic candies and fruits tossed together into an awesome hodgepodge mix of an instrumental album, listening to this record might very well awaken parts of your aural palette you didn’t know you had. Songs like ‘Charlotte Corday and ‘Hanna D’ make Dan Deacon and The Flaming Lips look like they’re not having enough fun with their music. With so many sounds condensed to a groove-bouncing mush, you’ll probably be bored to death once your headphones come off. – Mike Levine

Open Submissions 2012 Top Five: So Many Wizards

Posted on:

Darlings of the east side indie scene, there aren’t too many weeks that go by that you can’t catch So Many Wizards playing somewhere. From their Echo Residency earlier this year to their involvement in The FMLY’s underground events, and everything in between, this dreamy foursome hailing out of Long Beach are some of the hardest working musicians around. Their debut full length, Warm Nothing, released on JAXART Records, is an extremely well-crafted and thoughtful album filled with beach-hazed pop gems. – Jacqueline Caruso

Philly Artists Perform Beck Hansen’s Song Reader at WCL Jan. 8

Posted on:

OK, so I know that the word “hipster” has lost all its meaning in our culture by now. However, if someone out there wanted to steal Jeff Foxworthy’s million dollar idea and do a comedy standup routine using the line “You know your hipster…”, I’m pretty confident that “if you release your new album only on sheet music” would be a fitting punchline to complete that sentence. Well, it is Beck, who is pretentious enough to make the coolest dudes in music, The Flaming Lips, hate him after touring as his backing band. And don’t get me started on the whole weirdo Scientology shit! But he is a talented musician so it might be worth swinging by World Café Live tonight to hear some local favorites like Levee Drivers, Sean Hoots, Johnny Showcase, Rich Mystics, Juston Stens, and a whole slew of others interpret Beck Hansen’s latest project, Song Reader. World Café Live, 3025 Walnut St., 8pm, $12, All Ages – Q.D Tran

Open Submissions 2012 Top Five: I Hate You Just Kidding

Posted on:

I Hate You Just Kidding is a feel-good folk-pop duo drenched in the never-ending sunshine of SoCal. Their debut full length, Days Grow Longer, has all the charm of a bedroom recording, while still maintaining all the joy of well-crafted pop fit for an iTunes ad. Their cat and mouse vocals ooze with charisma and chemistry, leaving you with a sense of familiarity, as if you’ve just spent the last twenty-five minutes with dear friends. – Jacqueline Caruso

New Music Video: “Scallops” – Wrecking Crew

Posted on:

Here’s a new music video from the Wrecking Crew for the track "Scallops" off last year’s well-recieved debut release Wu-Tang Pulp. It was directed by F Pat Murray, and you should notice different parts of Philly as the backdrop throughout the video. We have to give a shout out to Taco Loco on 4th and Washington. Yes, our favorite tacos come from an RV made by a good Mexican family who deserves their own restaurant! (Pro tip: At Taco Loco, carnivores rule, and you should ask for extra fixins if you want more than just the traditional onion and cilantro toppings. You can thank us later. ;o)
