NYC Year End Poll – ALT FOLK Submission: Sorcha Richardson ties in 2nd Place

Posted on:

If there’s one place where people keep their secrets locked away, it has to be our beds. Sorcha Richardson spends a lot of time here, whether ruminating on love, or attempting unsuccessfully to get out of bed to start her day. But mostly, she’s sleeping… where a certain poetry finds its way through her gentle steel-string guitar shapes and soothing alto that seems to reach out and beg you to confide in her. In ‘I Heart NYC’ Sorcha ponders how much the city loves her…. show her just how much when she plays Glasslands on Feb 24.

NYC Year End Poll – ALT FOLK Submission: Derrick & The Black Sea Ties in 2nd Place

Posted on:

It can be hard to do the right thing. We all know you want to of course, but for Derrick & The Black Sea, they understand how some things are easier said than done. In ‘Mama,’ Brooklyn singer Derrick Karg wails: "trying to be a man, but I don’t know right from wrong." Poor guy… but, I can relate. The Brooklyn band struggles their way through these issues of growing up and letting go throughout the few scattered tracks they’ve so far released. The honesty is telling, and the lonesome guitars and sparse drums bring it all home. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

The Wild Feathers Debut Video for “Backwoods Company”

Posted on:

If the word "feather" conjures the idea of things gentle and soft, then you may not be ready for The Wild Feathers or their newest track, "Backwoods Company." The song title, however, does the video perfect justice, as the clip features the band and some friends hanging out in the backwoods. But, just to keep the night interesting, things take a turn and end with a gruesome twist– you know… as usual.

The video was directed by Gus Black and premiered today over at Filter. You can find "Backwoods Company" on The Wild Feathers’ eponymous debut album, set for release later this year, and you can catch the band at the High Watt on February 6th. –Brianne Turner

Live Review: Line & Circle at the Satellite, 1/8/13

Posted on:

For the first week of the new year, The Satellite hosted free shows in partnership with Moheak Radio, Grimy Goods, and Downtown Lobby. A great way to lure fans in on cold nights usually spent recovering from overeating and the doldrums of returning to the nine-to-five grind. I ventured out on Tuesday to check out Midwest transplants, Line & Circle, whose anthemic indie rock is drenched in nostalgia. They played an impressive set that proved that while they may be new to LA, they came prepared. Lead singer, Brian Cohen’s vocals harken back to an era before whining was proof of a frontman’s vulnerability, with a haunting quality that at times evoked Robert Smith. Bass player, Nathan Gammill was working so hard, he vacillated between standing eerily still while his fingers danced like lightning across his fretboard, to a mere bob of the head. The theme of the night was maturity – in skill level, and in the feeling evoked through the music. Somehow, their songs give you the sense that they are lamenting heartbreaks and lessons learned from a youth long past, while it’s clear they are right in the midst of it all. But, don’t mistake me, this was not simply a buttoned-up masters class in rock. When Line & Circle hit the stage, they brought the energy up to eleven, and kept it there without hesitation throughout the entire set. A solid set of Indie Rock tunes, just the way you want them – without irony, gimmicks, or arrogance. The duo, turned studio five-piece, recently released a 7” on White Iris Records, which boasts the likes of Beast Coast, Electric Guest, and NO. Check out the single, “Roman Ruins,” below, and keep your eye out for these up-and-comers. Rounding out the night, Blonde Summer brought their slacker pop to the opening slot, while The Ross Sea Party closed it out to a packed house, proving they are one to watch. – Jacqueline Caruso

After reuniting with his pop-punk outfit The Starting Line for a highly successful 10th anniversary tour to commemorate their album Say It Like You Mean It, Kenny Vasoli is back fronting his latest project Vacationer. They continue their string of notable shows tonight at Union Transfer by kicking off a U.S./Canadian tour opening for Kate Bush-esque Swedish sensation Nikki & The Dove. As things freakishly stay warm outside, it should be quite chill this evening inside the old Spaghetti Warehouse. Mike Bell & the Movies Opening for Parquet Courts at KFN Jan. 10

Posted on:

Mike Bell & the Movies will be bringing their brand of introverted indie pop to the cozy stage of Kung Fu Necktie tonight. While Bell’s 2011 self-deprecatingly titled album The World’s Unremarkable Man is rather upbeat, his latest release Concepts/Themes plays out a bit somber, but the introspective nature of his songwriting still remains. He’ll be opening for buzzing rockers Parquet Courts who are currently on their first U.S. Tour, and will also be joined by local all-female trio Amanda X, Priests and The Cats. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $5, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

Borrisokane makes Best of Austin Open Submissions

Posted on:

Borrisokane mixes a handful of styles to create something very notable, especially when dissecting its latestDisaster Face EP release. Take early 2000s British art-rock, something like The Long Blondes, impregnate it by a sunbathing orchestra, and you’ve got the artsy surf-rock sextet that is Borrisokane. – Brandi Lukas

The Woolen Men Sign to Woodsist Records

Posted on:

The Woolen Men have received the chance to expand their audience exponentially. The group just joined the likes of Panda Bear, Dan Deacon and Mount Eerie by signing to Woodsist Records and announced that they’ll be releasing their debut LP on the label this March. The band’s explosive live shows and DIY ethics have brought them attention in Portland over the past few years and spurred a series of self-released EPs and tapes, the most recent of which was released last month. Tour tape no. 1 is a collection of recordings made on their most recent west coast tour and captures their kinetic energy amidst lo-fi static. You’ll have to wait until March 5th to own the entire record, but you can listen to the first release, "Mayonnaise", below. 2013 is looking bright for these guys. –Benjamin Toledo
