Review – “Ἁγία Σοφία” by Creationists
Nope, we don’t know how to pronounce the title of the latest release from Creationists either. But like the artist formally known as Prince, it doesn’t matter – The music makes the pronunciation moot.
Rough and tumble rock-punk, cleanly-produced, rumbling with thick bass, glistening with verbed guitars and topped with excellently-bellowed vox. And (though it might seem strange in this context, it works brilliantly) the occasional trumpet ("Saint Stephen", "Black Hands"). Extra marks for the belligerently brilliant "Mucho Macho", though "End of the Line", "Tunnel Rat", and "Southern Cross" get stars too.
Harder rock, this, veering into the psyche side of the road at times, but all good and a worthy addition to the "produced in Austin" sticker. Mark one up for Creationists – This unpronounceable LP is an excellent way to start 2013.

Market East Opening for The Amazing at MilkBoy Philly Jan. 15
The Market East camp has been awfully quiet lately after bursting onto the Philly music scene early last year with their innocent retro sounds, three-part harmonies and self-titled debut EP. I often interpret that silence by bands (that aren’t about to breakup) to be time taken in order to work on new material, and possibly another recording, which seems to be the case for the acoustic trio. Tonight they will be breaking their silence in the New Year opening for Sweden’s The Amazing, who somewhat recently visited Philly on tour with fellow imports Tame Impala at Union Transfer. If you were shutout of that sold out show, then this evening is your opportunity to see if the Swedes can actually live up to their band name. Panda Riot “Black Pyramids”
Panda Riot are returning next month with their second full-length album, North Automatic Music, via Saint Marie Records (US) and Vinyl Junkie (Japan). The album will be released on Feb. 19th and is available for preview now. This is the bands second release on Saint Marie and the follow-up to last years 7" single "Serious Radical Girls".
The albums first single is "Black Pyramids" and is finds the band pushing their take on dreampop forward. The is fronted by Rebecca Scott on vocals and Brian Cook on guitar, and together with Justin Cheng and Jose Rodriguez they have create a sound that lush, rhythmic, and drenched layers of fuzzed out guitar and angelic vocals.
Watch Western Medication’s Video for “Big City”
Born from the mind of Justin Landis and formed in December of 2011, Western Medication have premiered their video for "Big City" over at Stereogum. In addition to Landis, the band features Alycia Wahn (formerly of Useless Eaters) and Bad Cop’s Adam Moult and Kevin Kilpatrick, created as "the remedy against the epidemic of uninspired rock that has been pumped out for years."
If you have a free minute (and eight seconds, to be exact), you can check out Western Medicine’s version of the remedy for uninspired rock music in the clip for "Big City," featuring a bad ass jam session and some computer-enhanced shots of Manhattan.
"Big City" will be featured on The Painted World 7", out January 29th via Jeffrey Drag Records.

NYC Year End Poll – FOLK ROCK Submissions: Swear & Shake are #1
For a folk band, Swear and Shake are distinctly uninterested in discussing far off lands and forgotten frontiers. In her lyrics, girl-next-door/singer Kari Spieler would rather bring up her weed habits (‘These White Walls’) or tough choices concerning playing marbles (‘Marbles’ – streaming). You’ll feel like you already know the group after listening through a couple of these charming acoustic tunes. See the band live when they play Irving Plaza on Jan 16. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

NYC Year End Poll – FOLK ROCK Submissions: The Ludlow Thieves at #2
For the lower east side’s The Ludlow Thieves, life is a continuing anthem, filled with moments larger than they may seem, only your lens needs shifting. Projecting an exuberance that harkens back to hair metal’s declarations of passion and love, The Ludlow Thieves do it all with mandolins and acoustic energy instead. Songs like ‘Sing Me Back’ (streaming) might very well harken a new national anthem with all their love for their hometown New York and all the circles of friends they’re surrounded by. Check the band out when they play Arlene’s Grocery on Jan 16. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)
