The Deli Philly’s Year End Poll 2012 – Submission Results!

Posted on:

We’re very excited to be back with our Year End Poll 2012 for Best Philly Emerging Artists! We just uploaded the full list of nominees. It’s in the right column on this page and also HERE. Some of the acts in the list were selected through our Open Submissions process that we announced last week and others were picked by our fine jury of local industry folks/music lovers (listed below), who could freely choose 3 artists in the order of their preference. Special thanks to them for sharing! [BTW: If you were wondering why some more well-known names are missing from the list, that’s probably because we didn’t include major label artists (they already have a staff helping to push their music careers forward), and we wanted to try and keep the list to acts that just might need the exposure more. We also didn’t include past Year End Poll Winners because you should know how much they rock by now!] Points have already been assigned to each artist according to how well they did in the selection process. Now, the readers’ and fans’ votes will also influence the final chart. As you may have seen in the past, each vote will count so cast yours now!

List of Jurors: Brendan Bercik (Pilam), Dan Bisogno (Choice Tasters, Vice, Live Nation), Jeff Blinder (Spazz Presents), Kate Bracaglia (Philly.com, The Key), Eric Bresler (PhilaMOCA), Ryan Crump (Philly Drum Project), Kevin D’Mello (RockaPhilly), Mikele Edwards (Silk City), Nick Fanelli (The Fire, Guild Shows), Stacie George (Live Nation), Ellei Johndro (Shadowscene), Matt Kelchner (Bikini Island), Kevin Kennedy (The Swollen Fox), Colin Kerrigan (Out of Town Films, Philly.com, Pitchfork), Josh T. American Babies Opening for Jesse Malin & The St. Marks Social at JB’s Jan. 16

Posted on:

American Babies the creative off shoot of Brothers Past frontman Tom Hamilton makes a stop at Johnny Brenda’s tonight. With a revolving door of talented backing band members centered on the constant of Hamilton, American Babies play a brand of Americana grounded in a tight musical unit. It’s a sound that easily fits the barrelhouse to the backyard barbecue any and everywhere in between. Warm soulful vocals that connect both in tone and lyric, developing a comfortable layer of familiarity that is further reinforced by a rich driving groove on up-tempo songs or a slow and steady pace that takes the chill out of the air essence on the simpler ones.  The energy is always there, whether it’s an internal yearning on an outward striving that keeps the musical wheels turning. American Babies will be opening for Jesse Malin & The St. Marks Social who take folky singer-songwriter material and push it forward with a punk edge. Johnny Brenda’s 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $12, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Free Week Lives!

Posted on:

Somebody thank the good folks over at Sonic Vault, who saved this year’s Free Week to celluloid for posterity (or maybe it’s just a hard drive somewheres in the cloud).  We’re talking performances from over 55 local bands.

So you wanna see something cool?  Go check out this set of pics they compiled and saved for ya.  It’s OK, go ahead, click through and take a stroll down foggy-memory lane.

But the best part?  Every page of this album also contains a link to free music from the pictured artist.

Free music from the vestiges of Free Week.  What’s not to like?

New Video: “Gilly Bibbons Promo” – Toy Soldiers

Posted on:

Below is a promo video for Toy Soldiers‘ upcoming show on February 15 at Kung Fu Necktie with Goodnight, Texas and August John Lutz II (from Levee Drivers), which is being presented by The Swollen Fox. "Who is Gilly Bibbons?" Well, hopefully one of the members from Toy Soldiers or Levee Drivers, or maybe their pals The Lawsuits or The Kalob Griffin Band (who should be in attendance) will be sober enough to give you the real answer that evening.

NYC Year End Poll – Indie Pop Submission: Dalton Ties with Cultfever in 1st Place

Posted on:

Any fan of the summer (or global warming) will immediately latch on to Dalton. This is the scrappy, thrown together energy of Brooklyn’s native son Nate Harar. A man with a deep, abiding belief in the power of the sun to work out whatever kinks are found in his guitar jams. ‘Breaker’ might not blast off, but it floats along on a breeze knowing it’ll get to its destination in due time. We are looking forward to a full release, but if the two tracks up on his Bandcamp are an indication of things to come… we can’t wait to play in this warm-weather sandbox – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

NYC Year End Poll – Indie Pop Submission: Cultfever Ties with Dalton for 1st Place

Posted on:

Welcome to the always troublesome world of Cultfever. The Brooklyn-based duo made up from equal parts haunting vocals, (provided by singer/howler Tamara Jafar) and the warped groove sculptures of Joe Durniak. Though I’m not entirely sure what the endgame is, this is a group that clearly seems to be on a mission. From iPhone videos (‘knewyouwell’) to their rampaging self-titled debut, the band attacks with an emotional blast in tracks like my favorite ‘Collector.’ They won’t be gentle with you, but that’s probably not what you wanted from a band anyway. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

NYC Year End Poll – Indie Pop Submission: The Henry Millers Take 3rd Place

Posted on:

Whenever I think of The Henry Millers, the ultra-literate quartet from Brooklyn, I always think of my parent’s music and how every band sorta looked like a family back in the ’60s. While not related to one another, singers John MacCallum and Katie Schecter certainly convey a kind of sibling understanding in their discussions of exes (‘Mr. Flash Gordon’) and love (‘Spinning Daises’).

Their kind of folksy wisdom isn’t out of step with memories of listening to The Mamas and The Papas for latest LP ‘Daises’. The record’s charm just might bring you into their family too. See the band live when they play at The Studio at Webster Hall on April 1st. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)
