Grace & Tony Debut “November”

Posted on:

Exemplifying that male/female folk harmonies don’t require suspenders and a mandolin, Grace & Tony skip the ho-heys and the stomp/clap rhythm and opt instead for a punkgrass sound that offers a refreshing take on modern Americana.

In their new video for "November," the duo takes to the streets of Florence, Alabama to tell a humble love story featuring a kick ass OG Cadillac and a lot of romantic eye contact. Directed by Lloyd Aur Norman of Villain Place, "November" highlights the first song from Grace & Tony’s forthcoming album of the same name. No word yet on a release date for November, but you can catch up on Inside A Seven Track Mind here in the interim. –Brianne Turner

1939 Ensemble Wins The Deli Portland’s Best of 2012 Poll for Emerging Artists

Posted on:

1939 Ensemble’s intricate compositions and unique arrangement have brought them the most nominations from our local jurors and in doing so awarded them the title of The Deli Portland’s Best Emerging Artist of 2012. Their fluid melodies, dynamic percussion and electronic ambiance entranced listeners over the course of the past year with hypnotic performances and the release of Howl and Bite. The debut showcases their distinct style and experimental drive which is seen through volatile vibraphone leads, blistering drum beats and dissonant background noise. The final results of the poll are posted below. Thanks to everyone involved with the voting process and congratulations to 1939 Ensemble. I hope that 2013 is a paramount year for you. – Benjamin Toledo

Clear Plastic Masks Release Video for “So Real”

Posted on:

‘Tis the season for video releases and our next clip comes from the guys in Clear Plastic Masks. Formed in 2011 in Brooklyn, the four piece picked up and headed to Music City, where they recorded their full-length right down the road at The Bomb Shelter. The band describes themselves as "rooted in the blue collar analog tradition of work a day rock n roll," making them perfect candidates for one of the next best bands to come out of Nashville, via somewhere else.

Premiered Friday by our friends over at The Scene, "So Real" was directed by Joshua Shoemaker and features live footage of the band playing a few different gigs and one house party that you’d probably get punched in the face at– and we mean that in a good way.

If you missed the Clear Plastic Masks set at the Mercy Lounge’s anniversary party, you can catch them again on January 29th at The End with William Tyler, Promised Land, and Buffalo Clover. –Brianne Turner

Beecher’s Fault plays Fontana on 01.24

Posted on:

Who says you can’t insert clever ideas into pop music? Like Ms Mr and Passion Pit before them, the members of Beecher’s Fault are finding a place in pop music for experimental ideas to exist, and find ways to be clever at the same time. It’s immediately evident listening to ‘Misbehavior’ how duo Ben Taylor and Ken Lamken have one foot in pearly pop, while including sonic somersaults to keep your head twirling while your feet are moving. There’s more to Beecher’s Fault than you’ll see from first glance. Check them out when they play Fontana in the LES this Thursday January 24 at 8pm. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

NYC Rapper MaG releases “freedom”

Posted on:

MaG is doing his thing. He’s made great strides since “Retail.” His style recalls a young Talib Kweli, with a bit more intelligibility. His nonchalance is endearing; it’s like the microphone is his best friend and he’s confiding his innermost thoughts. He’s shooting the shit too, and dreaming, posturing a bit, but not in an offensive way. He wants to have coffee with you, walk down the street with you and point out his favorite landmarks. He’s got secrets, and if you listen close enough, you’ll have them. In a culture hampered by its own exclusivity, MaG is defining a new form of “Freedom.” -=bMC

Brokeback “Brokeback and The Black Rock”

Posted on:

Brokeback is the longstanding project of Douglas McCombs (Tortoise and Eleventh Dream Day) that launched way back in 1995. The band has new line-up, established in 2010, and a new album dropping tomorrow via Thrill Jockey.

Brokeback and The Black Rock is the seventh release from the band and first since 2003. The band now consists of Pete Croke (Tight Phantomz, Head of Skulls!, Reds and Blue), Chris Hansen (Pinebender, Head of Skulls!), and James Elkington (the Zincs, the Horse’s Ha). The album these four have created attempts to capture the full sound of this talented band and succeeds on every level.

You can catch Brokeback at Rainbo Club (1150 North Damen Ave) on Jan. 27th and at Saki for a listening party on Jan. 28th at 7pm.

New Track: “MLKRIP” – Asaad

Posted on:

Asaad is back with a new track "MLKRIP," which was produced by Quiet Explosion. Now, we highly doubt that this most recent offering would really be considered a homage to Martin Luther King, Jr. by most. However, the unique, raw verses and flow are certainly what we’ve come to expect from the prolific and controversial North Philly emcee.
