New York’s Generator Ohm have been… generating quite the buzz with their debut album, “Upon the Me Om I.” Not as relaxed as “ohm” might indicate, the band melds grunge heaviness and progressive intricacies and drives the energy to a punky, frenzied state. in the twelve tracks long record, Willie Chen(guitar, bass, vocals), Ernest D’Amaso(guitar, bass and vocals), Mike Morales(drums) showcase their adrenalized style on “Lemming Shuffle,” reverberating “They Can See Us,” the militaristic guitar strums that introduce “Platius,” frantic drums of “Smoke Eater,” and album closer, “Yukon’s Tempest” which centers around crashing drums and tumultuous guitar distortion. Generator Ohm have a couple of shows in the next few days, playing Arlene’s Grocey on December 5 and King Killer Studios in Gowanus onthe 22nd. – We added the track "Marginal Hop" to our NYC Alt Rock SoundCloud playlist here. Handshakes host residency at Silverlake Lounge
Echo Park sextet Handshakes hold a name that invites commonality with its listeners. So it’s no surprise that their just released EP, Crooks & Villains, is a sprightly, hooky record that never lowers its head down even when the melodies move toward a minor key. It’s a lean, economical batch of pop songs that glow with a sunny disposition and charming modesty. They’ll be playing every Monday night at the Silverlake Lounge all throughout the month of December.

Their Planes Will Block Out the Sun plays Pianos on 12.05
Have you looked behind yourself recently? You never know… someone could be watching you. Sorry to worry you, but if the new LP from Jersey group Their Planes Will Block Out the Sun is any indication, we may have a lot to bre concerned about. From the voices in my head found at the end of new single ‘The Hunter‘ (streaming below) to mysterious ‘Tumors’ found in one of my fave groove-based math rock tracks from the album ‘Brasil,’ listening to these guys music reveals a band in a very thoughtful and rather bleak mood. Compared with previous records, the band’s latest delivers a focused bang on the head, caught between Interpol-like paranoia, and jazz-inflected grooves The Dismemberment Plan would have been proud. You can see the band live on 12.05 (tomorrow) at Pianos with other NYC acts Chamber Band, Julien Funk and We Run; in the meantime… check out their record on their Bandcamp – and make sure no one’s following you until then. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)
NYC indie pop band on the rise: Hey Anna
If you enjoy what we call "rootsy pop," Hey Anna is the breath of fresh air you’ve been waiting all year to hear. Their new EP’s five tracks keep the material humming along on boardwalks and ice cream stands and long afternoons, for your private, immaginary summer-during-the-winter-months. Exchanging vocals for the journey, the group’s three singers (Anna, Katie and Erin Rauch-Sasseen) complement each other with an unabashed joy for all things fun: tracks like ‘Love, Love Baby,’ ‘Tiny Kiss,’ and ‘Once Again’ could have been arranged for The Jackson 5 had the band been around for your parents’ generation. This is some fun stuff. So hop in the car, and take that sightseeing road trip you’ve been putting off. The soundtrack has finally arrived. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)
We added "Blackout" (streaming below) to The Deli’s playlist of Best new NYC songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!
Co-founder of Philadelphia Record Exchange Named Next CEO of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
Congrats to co-founder and former owner of Philadelphia Record Exchange, Bucks County native, and Temple graduate, Greg Harris, who was just named the next CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (starting January 1)! Harris was the organization’s VP of Development since 1998, and had also worked for 14 years at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, where he started curating its library and broadcast collection. Here’s what The Roots’ ?uestlove had to say about the news: “As a musician and historian I’m thrilled to see a friend, Greg Harris, named as President and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Philadelphia Record Exchange was my home away from home, and most of my 70,000 plus vinyl records came from there.” Special thanks to Philly Daily News’ Dan Gross for bringing this to our attention.
Conquistador release “With a Love Like That” video
Glam enthusiast Conquistador has just released a promo cut of "With a Love Like That", a loony, green-screen set piece journey to the galaxies that boasts saturated neon colors and elaborate beta-tape era editing techniques. A ridiculous amount of eye candy that could almost be missed if distracted by his impressive moustache. Oh yeah, and the song is quite catchy, too!
Tuesday Tune-Out w/Nightlands & Mikele Edwards at PhilaMOCA Dec. 4
Be prepared for a mind-bending experience at PhilaMOCA’s Tuesday Tune-Out tonight when Nightlands, a.k.a. Dave Hartley, takes over the weekly music and film series, which is being curated by BITBY. The basketball lovin’, indie music community go-to bassist from The War on Drugs will be performing a live original score to Stanley Kubrick’s epic movie 2001: A Space Oddyssey with assistance from special guest Jeff Zeigler, and Mikele Edwards will also be helping to set the mood with some space-age sounds. If you had any questions about what will be going down this evening, I’ve gathered a series of tweets (below) from Hartley yesterday that should cover most of them.
“YES. The dialog will remain in the film. YES. There will be an intermission. YES. I’ll be playing Nightlands songs. YES. I wrote new songs for this performance. YES. There’ll be improvised bits. YES. Producer/musician extraordinaire Jeff Zeigler will help. YES. 2001 is the greatest film ever made. YES. smoking reefer to enhance the experience is encouraged. NO, you need to bring your own.”
(No worries about that last one – I’ve got you covered if you forget. ;o) PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St., 7pm, $14, All Ages – Q.D. Tran
