The Indecent releases video, plays Shea Stadium on 01.05

Posted on:

Not much to write about before the holidays, so we’ll indulge in a band that’s definitely neither "indie" (they are signed to Warner) nor emerging (at least according to our standards), but extremely young and relatively new to the scene. NYC and Canada based The Indecent plays what could be called nu-grunge, but they do it without looking out of date or derivative. And they are so friggin’ young it’s almost scary. Check out below their new video for the single "Control." They’ll be playing Shea Stadium in Brooklyn on January 5 – it will be a packed show. If you are in NJ, they’ll be there at The Stanhope House on December 29.

Seattle Alternative Folk: King Friday

Posted on:

Folk music has evolved over the past few years, particularly with the emergence of the indie scene, but it’s refreshing to find a band keeps to it’s roots. Seattle’s King Friday occasionally features a piano in their songs, but that’s as far as they stray in terms of instrumentation from their straightforward acoustic guitar fueled folk pop. Joe Bolton, Matthew Sweeney, and Alex Folkerth use this simplicity of sound to showcase their engaging lyrics, vocal dynamics, and harmonization. Their three albums, including their latest “Let Him at Cake (Songs for Birds)” are available for download here.-Lucy Sherman

American Rock from NJ: The Micks

Posted on:

Channeling classic rock and Americana, New Jersey based trio The Micks released their self-titled debut EP in November. The band began playing in Jersey City in 2010 with McMickle brothers Matt, on guitar, and Sam, on drums, and were later rounded out by bass player Hank Prol. Optimistic and hopeful, The Micks’ youthful energy brings a new spark to a genre that too often lacks in the inspiration department. The album was recorded entirely on analog, which fits the band’s homage to the early days of rock. – Devon Antonetti

Free Download: “klonopin” – Pill Friends

Posted on:

So we’ve had this shadowy, lo-fi track (below) by Pill Friends called "klonopin" on repeat lately. While the recording seems more like a demo because of its rawness, the single’s sardonic lyrics and outro hook with its intertwining guy-gal vocals have seeped into our bloodstream like the powerful pharmaceutical that the song is named after. You can download the track for free along with the rest of the EP it’s kyle’s birthday everyday HERE, which also includes a cover of Elvis Depressedly’s "Mickey Yr a Fuck Up" that is actually a lot better than the original version.

Industries of the Blind’s multi-media show at The Knit on 12.21

Posted on:

Industries of the Blinds impressed us at our recent "post-chestral" CMJ show, where they performed their post-rock/ambient tunes with the intensity and instrumental precision required by the sober and atmospheric material. The band has been working on a multi-media show involving projections which will be unveiled with a show at The Knitting Factory on 12.21.

The event will unfold in two acts; Act One will feature Industries of the Blind performing their original music (think Explosions in the Sky, SIgur Ros, Godspeed!). During Act Two, four short films will be screened while the band simultaneously performs their scores in real-time as they unfold, creating an intimate, immediate bridge between music and film.

Blackfeet Braves: Download “Vicious Cycle”

Posted on:

The story goes that these five San Diego County boys called themselves Blackfeet Braves, then hid out on a ranch built upon an Indian burial ground to write and record their debut LP, expected out in February on Lolipop Records. After listening to the single, “Vicious Cycle,” which they are making available to download, I’m a believer. The lead singer croons with the necessity of one possessed, and the reverb drenched instrumental break feels like a tribal ceremony to summon ancestral spirits. The band brilliantly creates the mood of the song not just through lyrical content, but the arrangement itself. The tempo changes and energy literally cycle from calm and groovy, to frenzied and frenetic, and back again. With references to The Growlers and Allah-Las being tossed around so flippantly lately, these guys actually deserve the best of what that indicates. Grab the download of “Vicious Cycle” from their Soundcloud. If you dig, check them live Friday, January 4 at the Constellation Room in Santa Ana, or more locally, at the Echo on January 7. – Jacqueline Caruso

Meek Mill Not Allowed to Tour Due to Probation

Posted on:

It looks like Meek Mill’s troubles with the law are continuing to affect his budding music career. Mill, a.k.a. Robert Williams, was detained a few months back on the day that one of his release parties was set. Well, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer, Judge Genece Brinkley ruled today that he will not be allowed to travel for concerts and other music-related appearances because of his probation stemming from an arrest in January 2007 where he was booked for his involvement in drugs, guns and an assault. He chose a nonjury trial, and in August 2008, Meek was found guilty of assault, four counts involving carrying an unlicensed gun in public, and two drug counts. He was sentenced to 11 to 23 months in prison, and served eight months – being released to five years of probation, which he still has about three years to complete. Mill was supposed to be in Los Angeles on Wednesday to perform on the Conan O’Brien show. It would have been his last stop in the U.S. before ending 2012 in Africa with shows in Lagos, Nigeria and Libreville, Gabon, which have already been cancelled due to the uncertain outcome of today’s hearing. Meek Mill will continue to remain in Philly so that he can periodically appear in court for his probation hearings.

Haroula Rose @ Schubas

Posted on:

I had the pleasure of catching Haroula Rose’s set at Schubas this past Saturday. Although the set was brief, as she was the first act of four to play that night, it was clear she was excited to be back home in Chicago. Rose is currently based in LA but grew up in Chicago and had several family members in the crowd including a young nephew. With that and the Christmas lights surrounding the small Schubas stage, it felt like I had arrived at the family Christmas dinner and our talented cousin from LA was playing a few songs in front of the fire.

The set was warm, interactive, and fun. Rose played a few new tracks from her latest ep So Easy, but added in a Waylon Jennings cover and a special Christmastime cover of John Denver’s "Christmas for Cowboys". Rose closed the charming set with the song that started it all "Someday". It is a song about longing, wishing, and waiting for your moment to arrive and for Rose it still seems fitting but it also feels like her moment is coming very soon.

Check out the new hypnotic jam called "Sacred Wisdom" from beatmaker FLOTE (a.k.a. Matt Tripodi)! It has a really nice balance of feeling organic yet mechanical at the same time, and is the title track off his new full-length album, which you can download for free HERE.

A Nu-Soul for your parties – Lake Street Dive play Bowery on 12.27

Posted on:

With Lake Street Dive, you’re not left with the impression you’re hearing recordings at all. In fact, most of this group’s songs were indeed recorded in live situation. From hanging a couple of mics up at a party (‘You Go Down Smooth’), to the off-the-cuff feel of ‘Henriette,’ these are tracks that exude a feel like the band’s re-creating their songs at the moment they’re playing them.

And with a voice like singer Rachael Price’s, it’s no wonder they have no need for studio trickery to produce their blend of gospel yelps and old school Muscle Shoals soul. Their sound is built from the inside out, from the chug of the upright bass to the trumpet blasts – this is a band meant to be experienced live. So see them when they play Bowery Ballroom on Dec 27th. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Dream-Pop from Bushwick, NY: Sparxx

Posted on:

Fronted by the glitteringly motivated force that is Heather Sparx, Bushwick based band Sparxx in 2012 released 4 Bandcamp singles of exquisitely crafted, uptempo dream-synth-pop. The band will be shooting a video for their new song "Mod" (streaming below), and if you want to be in it you can show up at The Lab at 224 Wyckoff Avenue on 12.20, the show will be taped. The song undulates with synth washes and a straight foward drum pattern before the guitars slowly emerge. Heather’s voice and lyrics create a seductive combination that at times hearkens back to Lene Lovich and "Lucky Number" on the verses. It’s all reverberated guitar chords and cathedral hall voices on the chorus however, placing the sound closer to prime era Siouxsie Sioux – the fact that Heather’s appearances stradles the line somewhere between Siouxsie and Madonna only adds to the appeal. Also performing will be NYC emerging bands Hippy, Slonk Donkerson and Haybaby. – Dave Cromwell
