Weekend Warrior, November 23 – 25

Posted on:
Ortlieb’s Lounge will be welcoming in some darker vibes than they’re used to when Nothing and Night Sins both celebrate their latest releases tonight at the jazz-friendly venue. Led by Domenic Palermo, Nothing infuses some of the aggression that its members were influenced by while growing up immersed in the local hardcore scene yet their mellowed-out shoegaze soundscapes have a breath of maturity and contemplativeness that can only be discovered amidst a lifetime of hard living, which you’ll find on their latest EP Downward Years to Come (A389 Records). Night Sins, who are made up of musicians from Nothing, Mother of Mercy and Salvation, have recently crept into the earphones of the Philly music community with their take on the goth/industrial sounds of yore from the band’s first full-length album, New Grave (Avant! Records). It will certainly be a Black Friday in Ortlieb’s this evening. Ortlieb’s, 847 N. 3rd St., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Alexis V.

Midwest Music Foundation is presenting the fourth annual MidCoast Takeover from March 13-16 at Shangri-La in Austin, TX. This event promises four days of music, mayhem, and general debauchery—the definitive Midwestern musical throw down. MidCoast Takeover will showcase bands from Kansas City, Lawrence, and the Midwest region on the national stage during South by Southwest.

This is also a free showcase—no wristbands or badges are required. Last year’s event was featured in USA Today and The Deli SXSW. This year’s will be bigger and better than ever! If you would like to apply, click on the link HERE to register. The deadline for registration is January 10, 2013 (yes, the graphic above has an incorrect date).

We’ll see you there!

The Midwest Music Foundation is proud to support the DIY spirit of Kansas City’s intrepid and inspired music community. Up from the gut, out from the middle, we are the sound of the heart of American music.

Listen to Jessica Pratt’s Self-Titled Album

Posted on:

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.

Do yourself a favor and dig up your old home movies—before the illness, accident, or divorce—turn down the lights, and play Jessica Pratt’s self-titled album.

Her music is neither rooted in the past nor the present, but somewhere visceral and in-between, like the memories you bothered to keep. Don’t expect hooks and fanfare. This quiet, unadorned album is fingerstyle guitar, timeless vocals, and meandering melodies. It could just as easily live on a cassette tape as it could a lossless file.

Premiere – Free Download: “The Lights Down” – Boy Scout of America

Posted on:
Kyle Lambert a.k.a. Boy Scout of America is releasing a new tripnotic EP on November 23, which, appropriately, is Black Friday. On the biggest day of consumer gluttony, Yung †rillionaire is going to be released to the masses. The dark, meticulous, based journey is both eerie and playful, and if nothing else, is impressive in scope and production value. Boy Scout of America will be performing at Magic Death Sounds’ 2nd Birthday Party on December 6 at the 700 Club, so you can go get down to the spooky, swollen crunk jamz live and in person. We are really stoked to premiere the first offering from the new EP Yung †rillionaire called “The Lights Down,” which you can also download for FREE below. Check out it out, and make sure to grab a copy of the album when it comes out this Friday HERE. We asked Kyle for a few words about the project, so we’ll leave you with that.

“Yung †rillionaire was painstakingly crafted to perfectly accompany a fine beer, unspeakable sex act, warehouse rager, meditation in total darkness, mental breakdown, or any given combination of the aforementioned acts. It also plays for about as long as your typical 1 gram blunt burns.”

Things to Do for “Blackout Wednesday”

Posted on:
Tonight is one of the heaviest drinking evenings of the year. Since we already have “Black Friday” the day after Thanksgiving, I like to call today “Blackout Wednesday.” You probably already have plans to meet up with family and friends at a local bar and/or a relative/pal’s home. Well, if your crew likes to get rowdy to some tunes, then we have plenty of local acts ready to entertain you for the night. Grimace Federation’s Popular Science will be providing the hot electronic beats at Kung Fu Necktie. The dance party will also be doubling up as an EP release party for Beard-o-Bees (a.k.a. Jesse Miller from Lotus). If you are looking for a place where the alcohol flows like water and it won’t cost you anything to get your peeps in, then Ron Gallo’s Revue will be hopping at Fergie’s. It’s also Levee Drivers frontman August Lutz’s birthday so expect the man of honor to be ready to party and entertainment. Across the way, their pals TJ Kong and the Atomic Bomb are at the North Star Bar for the Supersucker Thanksgiving Eve Party so they’ll most likely be joining the crew at Fergie’s for a little late night action, but I’m sure that those are Kong and company’s primetime hours for hanging. Garage-psych power trio St. James & The Apostles will be shutting down The Fire. And if you have no fear of getting a DUI or just aren’t that much of a drinker, then you can also make the trek to catch Hoots & Hellmouth at The Sellersville Theater. Wherever you end up, have fun and don’t get arrested! Cheers! – Q.D. Tran

The band is now announcing the release of debut EP ‘“Euphorian Age” on February 1st, which will serve as an appetizer to the full length scheduled for later in 2013. Zak Smith’s new video

Posted on:

Zak Smith‘s rock’n’roll is not intended for the Brooklyn hipster, but for the masses outside the bubble we live in, who enjoy Classic American Rock as made famous by artists like The Boss or John Mellencamp. Zak has got the voice, the chops and the look to pull this off big time, as his growing fan base – approaching 12k Facebook likes – can testify. The bearded singer recently released this fine video of the single "Crawling" – streaming below. In the next few weeks he’ll be playing several shows in the NY/NJ area – more info here.
