Idle Idols Waiting to Be Worshipped at PhilaMOCA Nov. 4

Posted on:
Youth takes center stage tonight at PhilaMOCA. Idle Idols bring the aggressive pissed off edge of punk rock and play it with an air of California-cool. While the songs are still focused in a high-energy down-hill “play it like it sounds” mentality, the band also does its due diligence in placing an emphasis on creating a crisp complete sound. Sam Roland and Andrew Migliore click in a united guitar front – both in following the direction from where one leads to where the other is going and also in showcasing the capabilities of an a intricate dual-guitar threat. Speaking of California, Cruiser, the solo exploits Andy States, takes that idea and works through it in a pop-rock direction that utilizes simple catchy grooves and punctual bursts of guitar that will have his songs echoing in your ears well into the upcoming week. They’ll be hosting Boston’s Pretty & Nice. PhilaMOCA, 531 North 12th St., 8pm, $8 – $10, All Ages – Michael Colavita

Yellow Red Sparks play El Cid 11.03

Posted on:

Yellow Red Sparks, dynamic guitar/double bass/drums indie folk trio from Los Angeles, fronted by this sprightly young man that is Josh Hanson also happen to be one of the first acts I saw during this year’s CMJ. Early afternoon, upstairs at Pianos. Not the easiest crowd to work with, but thanks to some joke cracking, involvling us all in some thirty-second-singalong of ‘I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You’, and, let’s not forget the essentials, playfully swaying through their set of ‘cinematic’ country. Engaging, entertaining, upbeat; so far, they’re ticking a far few boxes to stand aside your average folkies, right? Catch them this evening (11.03) at LA’s El Cid, with Dustbowl Revival and Sad Robot. All the info’s available here.

Stinking Lizaveta w/Witch Mountain & Castle at JB’s Nov. 3

Posted on:
Like the smell on Sansom in August or the tourists rushing past the Art Museum to stand next to the Rocky statue, some things can only come from Philly. Stinking Lizaveta, one of our city’s finest – and weirdest – fusion trios is one of them. With their exuberant stoner sludge boogie-jazz, built on towering riffs and drum crescendos, they’ve been a cult favorite since the mid-90s, due in no small part to their legendary shows. Tonight at Johnny Brenda’s is the perfect location to get consumed by their out-of-control stage presence. They’ll also be accompanied by Witch Mountain and Castle – both doom metal icons in their own right. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 Frankford Ave., 9pm, $12, 21+ – Alyssa Greenberg

Weekly Feature: SoftSpot plays Fireproof 11.15

Posted on:

Bushwick’s own SoftSpot was founded by Sarah Kinlaw and Bryan Keller who have been friends “since the sandbox.” With the help of drummer Blaze Bateh, the band charges through their art-rock compositions with vehement wails – channeling their inner-Jonsi. The trio released the EP Nous in the fall of last year, with a new single “The Cleansing Hour” that followed in February, and early in September, dropped their latest album ‘Ensō’. Catch them at Fireproof on November 15th & read Devon Antonetti’s interview with the band here

Weekly Feature: Dinosaur Feathers release new single on Torrential Zen compilation

Posted on:

Dinosaur Feathers have been active in the NYC scene for quite some time now, but their peculiarly colorful pop hasn’t lost any of the exuberance of their beginnings. Single ‘Untrue’ (off their latest record Whistle Tips) is something Franz Ferdinand might have made if they spent some time surfing in Mali. The band just released a new track, ‘New Frontier’, on Unhabitable Mansion’s latest compilation ‘Torrential Zen’, which also features songs by Fatty Acids, Sat. Night Duets & Radical Dads. Lushlife & Light Heat Help Celebrate the 215 Fest at Underground Arts Nov. 3

Posted on:
Tonight the focus of the 215 Festival will shine on its strongest music showcase of the weekend at Underground Arts. Lushlife, a.k.a. Raj Haldar, brings a unique approach to hip-hop as both an emcee and producer, combining a wide array of sonic sampling warping listeners through various stages of musicology. Capable of taking a simple snare-beat and owning the mic with sweet-spot lyrical precision, Lush pays tribute to his “golden days” predecessors. However, while his lyrical narratives are influenced by emcees like Nas and Black Thought, it’s just a tool at Lushlife’s disposal. Integrating powerful lyrics with multi-genre-fused beats creating music that honors the past while sounding like the future. Light Heat, the latest venture for Quentin Stoltzfus (formerly of Mazarin), takes the concept of classic pop-rock production and pushes at its seams by using the layered instrumentation approach in strategically building songs that are both complex in structure yet accessible. Also joining the bill is Dave Quicks (formerly of the BurnDown All-Stars) with his trio and NYC’s Lily & The Parlor Tricks. Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 8pm, $5 (Light Heat Photo by Kyle Costill) – Michael Colavita

Split Screens Releases New Track “Born” for Free Download

Posted on:

Jesse Cafiero’s SF-based solo project Split Screens is set to release a self-titled EP on December 4th. Its sumptuous introductory track “Born” is available for download now.

The song is as much a tapestry as it is a composition, woven from delicate swaths of sound and tape delay through a warp of droning bass, acoustic guitar, and percussion. Quivering organ, sweeping lap steel, shimmering vibraphone, fluttering mellotron, and washy vocal harmonies coalesce and diverge and then melt away like memories of your childhood.

Weekend Warrior, November 2 – 4

Posted on:
Union Transfer welcomes a pair of local heavyweights Saturday night. Hoots & Hellmouth have a rustic Americana sound that’s part cabin-in-the-woods-campfire country and party revival-backyard blues. Sean Hoots’ vocals have a soulful reassuring preacher’s authority that combines with instrumentation which thrives in its simplistic tradition, but further succeeds in its tightly woven combination of clean strings, guitar, mandolin, etc., and persistent stomp rhythms that continually stoke the fire. While Hoots & Hellmouth’s sound tips their cap to tradition and history, on the opposite side of the bill, Creepoid takes classic elements of acoustic guitar music and twists it in a dark grungy psychedelic way. The hollow buzzing guitar etches haunting siren-like tones, which are only magnified by heart-thumping percussion that serves as an adrenaline shot amid the eerily chilling vocals of Sean Miller and Anna Troxell. While their fans may not hang in the same circles, these two bands represent the soulful depth of Philly – one in the familiar warmth of tradition and the other in the chilly darkness that lies in its wake. Union Transfer, 1026 Spring Garden St., 8pm, $13 – $15, All Ages – Michael Colavita

Amalie Bruun and Lion in the Mane play NordAmerican show at Tammany on 11.07

Posted on:

Those searching for a post-election night event to either celebrate or drown their sorrows need look no further than Tammany Hall in NYC and the NordAmerican showcase on November 7. This inaugural event (intended to turn into a monthly showcase in early 2013) will feature a variety of Nordic talent, two acts of which are already firmly based in New York. Headlining the night will be the lovely chanteuse Amalie Bruun . Many locals may already be familiar with her captivating vocals as one half of the duo Ex Cops. Amalie’s work as a solo artist has very little to share with that group’s psych sound. Her latest single Crush (released in August and streaming below) tastefully touches on bits of torch pathos and at other times country sentimentality.

Popular New York alt rockers Lion in the Mane are also scheduled to appear. Drawing on an emotional feel and sound that made waves in the mid-2000’s because of bands like Jimmy Eat World, their lyrics strike a bit deeper. EP title track “The Way We’re Wired” has an optimism running through the self-questioning and soul searching. Despite “New York City ’s soulless little lullabies” there is still a desire to “find a way for you to believe in me, the way I believe in you.” Building crescendos up to the dynamic conclusion indicates the work of experienced musicians and a conscientious attention to songwriting detail. – Dave Cromwell
