Last month the five-piece garage rock band Jolly Korea released their second ep, For The Record. They are giving the noisy but melodic ep away for free through their bandcamp page.
Here’s a new track called "Apples" from Literature, who recently moved to Philly from Austin and is a great addition to our talent pool. The song is the B-side to their new 7" single, which you can "name your pice" to download or purchase a physical copy HERE.
Plume Giant is a trio of multi-instrumentalists/vocalists who recently relocated to the city after graduating from Yale. From their theatrical grace to their retro-fitted instrumentals and rich vocal harmonies, they’re not really like anyone else in the city. They bring a refreshing finesse to the table and a lot of fun to the stage. With Calithump and its magnetic a capellas and swaying ways of a 60s summer daydream, Plume Giant easily charmed their way into the hearts of the NYC music scene. Probably the most endearing act to join the local folk parade this year, they’ve earned themselves a warm welcome to their new home. Don’t miss them live at The Rock Shop on December 5th, when they’ll be celebrating the release of their new album "Callithump". Check out the song "Kensico Dam from the new EP – TM

Glo-Fi/Chill Wave fans should mark January 23rd on their calendar, because that’s when New Jersey’s Ducktails will celebrate the release of their first album on Domino Records with a show at Le Poisson Rouge. Started as a solo project by Real Estate’s Matt Mondanile, Ducktails evolves with this album into a more collaborative effort. The preview title-track (streaming below) loses the low fidelity component present in all the band’s previous releases, but gains big time in the songwriting and production departement, so much so that we may want to call this "Dream Pop" rather than Glo-Fi. Look out for the release of another single before the release.
Though Kuf Knotz has made the recent move to Queens, NY, he still swings into town for plenty of shows and his BoomBox Collective event, a free showcase celebrating art and music at World Café Live. Tonight it will be hosting the release party of emcee/producer Zilla Rocca, who recently dropped his latest EP Party with Villains, which also features contributions from Wrecking Crew fam – Has-Lo, Curly Castro and Small Professor so expect to see them out supporting their homie. Another friend of the crew who has an album of his own to raise a glass to is Dewey Decibel. He’ll be slinging verses from his EP Son of a Beach. It’s party time, y’all! World Café Live (Upstairs), 3025 Walnut St., 9pm, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman
Sometimes living in the northeast this time of year can be a drag. November is a harbinger of long nights inside, brooding, staring into the fire, wondering when you’ll be able to once again dust off the old ten-speed and go for a ride around Harvard Square; or simply step outside without looking like a bag lady with circulation issues. Luckily, Boston indie pop quintet Parks is here to get you excited about one aspect of this season: Sweater Weather is the new jangle heavy first single from the upcoming full-length debut of Parks. Head bobbing is imminent, with super catchy hooks and thoughtful transitions. – Hillary Anderson
We’ve never really been that much into revival music, until we heard Foxygen‘s "Take the Kids Off Broadway" (which was our Album of the Month in April 2012 – the band graces the cover of our Fall 2012 NYC issue). But is this revival music anyway? To a certain extend, it is, since the NYC/Olympia duo’s references to the rock sound of the 60s and 70s are undeniable. But Foxygen’s way to unfold songs that constantly evolve from one brilliant melody to another, their imaginative kaleidoscopic DIY production, and Sam France’s vocal flair trascend influences to conjure up something that encompasses past and present to become timeless. We were curious to ask these guys some questions about how they record their music – you can find their answers on Delicious Audio.

It’s time to pump up the enjambment! Are you starved of syllables? Vacant of verbiage? Bereft of that Boom-Bap? Fret not, lovers of lyrics and revelers in rhyme, a collection of some of New York’s most potent wordsmiths is set to take the stage at the Knitting Factory Brooklyn this Thursday Nov. 29th. Headlined by Outernational, whose new EP was produced by RATM Tom Morello (can you tell?), and featuring support by the likes of Beans (formerly of Anti-pop Consortium), Mike Ladd, and MINDSpray’s Prop Anon, it promises to pack more syllables per measure than a Micro-Machines commercial. Seriously, though, these guys are dope. Stream the EP titletrack below, and watch a video here. – BrokeMC
