Dr. Dog has new Star Wars action figure stop-motion music video for “Do The Trick,” the newest single from Be The Void. It was directed by the band’s friend James Grip, who originally made the film at the age of 7 with the help from his father Alan. “The 8 mm footage has been re-edited to tell a story of love and loss, kind of.” Dr. Dog will be taking the stage at Austin City Limits this Saturday to make their first perform on the PBS TV show.

The Rescues to release new album ‘Blah Blah Love And War’

Posted on:

Guess what? We’re near the end of the year already. And assuming the Apocalypse doesn’t happen between now and December 21st, that means it’s time for some wishful thinking. To that end, The Rescues have come and delivered the first song to celebrate the end of 2012 with new single ‘Everything’s Gonna Be Better Next Year.’ Ready for your New Year’s parties everywhere, the song details relationships new and old, and even ends with a rousing verse to ‘Auld Lang Syne.’ Taken from their forthcoming release ‘Blah Blah Love And War,’ (set to be released at the start of next year) the band’s trademark 4-part harmonies are back in a big way. Should give us all something to look forward to next year. Check out the track below. – Mike Levine (@goldnuggets)

Charts Play Record Room’s 2 Year Anniversary Party 10.27

Posted on:

When listening to Charts, I can’t help but imagine myself at a low lit, gum popping, high-school dance of a by-gone time. There are guys in fancy blazers playing questionably appropriate rock-n-roll for the kids. Then someone spikes the punch, and I dash off in my bobby socks to wave a scarf at a night time drag race and smoke lots of cigarettes. Ok, so in my research I found that there had been a 1950’s doo-wop band named The Charts and perhaps this influenced me as I listened to Charts (no "the"). They do have a classic sound: a lo-fi buzz of burly bass (Andrew Clyde) and drum kicks (Josh Smith), all slicked up with romantic strikes of guitar strings and the twangy, sometimes punky vocals of Michael Rowan. There are rockabilly and punk elements, perhaps influenced by Ween, The Violent Femmes, or Suicidal Tendencies, that give them an intentional lilt, such as the warped "We Got it Good" off of The Eggy Tape EP. The trio’s latest work, Tease, continues in this drawl. The sound is heavy, yet off-beat and sweet, with a few tracks having the added harmonies of a female singer. The band has been rumored to play a swanky house show or two and has been busy playing with The We Shared Milk, jamming on the streetcar, and performing as part of a special PDX Pop Now! fund drive for KBOO community Radio. With Halloween season in Portland at hand, they are set to play a seasonal set of haunted pop songs like Slow Down Zombie(Your Eating Too Fast), How Did You Get So Dead, and more, for Record Room’s 2nd Anniversary party this Saturday. – Brandy Crowe

The North Wind Release “Mirror Lake” EP at The Know 10.25

Posted on:

Earnest and tightly-wound guitar that weaves between lighthearted post-rock and nuanced prog-grunge, The North Wind‘s guitar work on Mirror Lake is showcased like a snake winding across wet rock with it’s tongue flickering, no tail in sight. These songs never fall into the self-indulgent swells of delay-drenched drama that characterize their contemporaries; the pedal board is reigned in, and these songs move forward to a melodic closure that is equally rewarding and provocative. The atmospheric calm gives way to calamities of distorted chord progressions layered with shattered crystals of clear-to -the bottom counter melodies. The North Wind‘s rhythms keep the purposefully-meandering chords in a tight framework, and threaten to take the songs to ever-greater heights. Simultaneously blissful and workman-like in its guitar craft, this EP rewards multiple listens and attention to its delicate movement and syrup-thick moments like the impressive closing track "She Said." – Stephen Shoup

Album Review: Wu-Tang Pulp – Wrecking Crew

Posted on:
By now it is pretty obvious that hip hop collective Wu-Tang Clan are one of, if not the most influential crews in the genre, so a tribute album to the legends comes as no surprise. However, the Wrecking Crew’s Wu Tang Pulp mixtape is not your average “tribute” album.

Wrecking Crew is made up of lifetime students of the killa-bees – Philly emcee/producer Has-Lo, emcee/producer Zilla Rocca and emcee Curly Castro. Like any great Wu-Tang project, Pulp has a long list of featured emcees to give the feel of the Wu’s nine-man posse. The mixtape’s full roster includes My Man Shafe, Floodwatch, Al Mighty, Disco Vietnam, Small Professor, BLKHRTS, Son Raw, Gee Dubs, Ethel Cee, Y?ARCKA, Deal the Villain, Castle, Alaina Nelson, Random, and Boogieman Dela.

Pulp is comprised of original reconfigurations of selected tracks from the Wu’s extensive back catalog of group and solo efforts and the track’s original samples. The way the team of producers on the tape add new samples and arrangements on the original Wu-Tang songs brings a fresh and original perspective to the legendary outfit’s material. The mixtape is a stimulating listen for the most die-hard Wu-Tang fans trying to pick up all the references to the Wu, as well as enjoyable listen for people who aren’t really familiar with the 90s hip-hop icons.

The tape’s highlights include re-workings of tracks from Method Man’s Tical, Raekwon’s Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Ol’ Dirty’s Return to the 36 Chambers and the group’s legendary debut LP, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). The most interesting thing about the Wrecking Crew’s choice of songs is that they avoided the “classics.” For example, instead of “All I Need” off Tical, they go with an interpretation of “Bring the Pain” called “Pain Bringer,” and instead of ODB bangers like “Brooklyn Zoo” and “Shimmy Shimmy Ya,” the collective goes with “The Stomp” reworked as “FCK YR LF.”

Other standout tracks are “Dedicated to the Winners and the Losers” (“Can It Be All So Simple”) from Enter the Wu-Tang and “Mystery Inside” (“Rainy Dayz”) from Only Built 4 Cuban Linx.

Cold Blood Club releases a first EP

Posted on:

You remember ‘White Boyz’ right? The song that tried to make white male timidity into a cool thing, while being picked up for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week 2012 to soundtrack catwalks across Bryant Park. Indeed, Cold Blood Club are almost too catchy for their own good. Well, now the group is back with their first official EP, ‘Headlines & Firefights.’ Lead vocalists Kendra Jones and Brad Peterson are not exactly known for being timid, so you know when they do something new, it’s sure to turn heads. And based on their increasing penchant for loud, obnoxious party music, and loud, insane parties… it’s bound to be a thing best experienced live. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)
