Weekend Warrior, October 19 – 21

Posted on:

Makeshift shows pop up all the time in Philly so it shouldn’t be a surprise that festivals do as well. This Sunday Sweet Jane Vintage and Lucky 13 are teaming up to bring us the South Philly Fall Festival, and it’ll be a beautiful fall day to do so. There will be merchandise and food vendors along with local garage/psych bands like Spacin’, Residuels, Joe Kusy & The Rot Through Boys, Arctic Splash and more to keep things scuzzy and dirty in the South Philly streets. Take advantage of the good times outdoors before winter hibernation sets in! South Philly Fall Festival, Outside – Lucky 13 (1820 S. 13th St.), 12pm – 7pm, Free, All Ages – Alexis V.

Mirror Kisses Release New Song and Music Video

Posted on:

Harrisonburg VA’s dark wave duo Mirror Kisses released a new track this week called "Die With U (Again)" via Chill Mega Chill Records’ halloween album The Chiller Part 2: House on Haunted Chill. As usual, it’s pretty much the dopest sound out there now, and who wouldn’t want to get down with some 80’s synthy spookiness. Check it out right here: And there’s more! They also just posted a rad new music video for the single "Sleeping in the Hallway" off their album Bad Dreams.

Branes: music for Halloween and beyond

Posted on:

With Halloween just around the corner, the desolate, wicked sounds of synth duo Branes is the perfect soundtrack for zombie dance parties and haunted houses, but in reality their music should be enjoyed all year round. Listening to Branes’ album Perfection Condition, which was released earlier this month on Burger Records, is like running through a sci-fi movie, full of suspense, lasers and creatures from other worlds. Vocalist Ivy and her male counterpart Susan Subtract create a world that is dark and foggy, but one that is fun and animated. Considering that Branes started as a performance art project, it is not surprising that the music has a lot of movement that evokes visual characteristics. The synths are the deep and fuzzy backbone, but the sharp percussion adds some bounce to the music, while Ivy’s vocals move from sounded robotic to gargled. She has a pull and release vocal quality that makes it seem like she is telling a gripping ghost story around the camp fire. Her high energy and style of vocals bring to mind UK post punk bands like Essential Logic and Au Paris. Branes will be heading overseas to take part in Drop Dead Festival in Berlin, Germany on Halloween. – Karla Hernández

Buried Beds Opening for Savoir Adore at Ortlieb’s Oct. 19

Posted on:

Playing heart-warming indie pop with a folksy twist, local music darlings Buried Beds have a show tonight at Ortlieb’s. They’re workhorses in the Philly indie scene, having played in or contributed to a diverse array of area bands such as The War on DrugsMan ManmewithoutYou, and Dr. Dog, all while steadily crafting a trademark sound of luscious, wistfully-arranged rock perfect for the onset of autumn. Eliza Hardy and Brandon Beaver have helmed this project through years of musical evolution and life’s changes. They’re joined this evening by Savoir Adore, a similarly baroque indie-pop outfit, and Santah, power-pop devotees who are not to be missed. Ortlieb’s Lounge, 847 N 3rd St., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Alyssa Greenberg

Luther Record Release Show at The Fire Oct. 19

Posted on:

Tonight at The Fire we’ve got a show presented by recently coagulated booking collective The Guild. It is the record release show for Luther, a pretty new melodic-punk band from Philly by way of Jersey. They got some nice praise and well-deserved hype for their debut EP Siblings and Sevens, and between touring, touring and more touring, they found time to record their debut LP Let’s Get You Somewhere Else (Chunksaah Records), which they’ll be celebrating its release this evening. The music is excitable and pretty damn catchy, but still punk, so don’t worry. The lineup is deep with local buddies Idiot Kid and Scarier Area, but also has NJ pop-punkers Static Radio and UK band The Arteries. The band has been touring with punk stalwarts The Bouncing Souls and Fishtown homies The Menzingers all over the place, so this will be a raucous homecoming sure to go deep into the night. You can booze your heart out at The Fire, so come out and have a good time. The Fire, 412 W. Girard Ave., 8pm, $8, 21+ (Photo by Connor Byrne) – Adam G.

Cuddle Magic Assembling Music at Tin Angel Oct. 19

Posted on:

In order to properly describe what the Philly-Brooklyn hybrid Cuddle Magic does, it may be best to provide a roll-call of the elements at their disposal and the manner or technique in which each of these elements is emphasized in creating a complex system of sound. The reality is that the band, who is performing at the Tine Angel tonight, produces music, which makes use of a plethora of instruments like woodwinds, horns, strings etc. They use female and male vocals that bounce off each other and interlock in rich natural harmony marrying in a way that makes one wonder how they were ever apart; all the while spinning Byzantine literature lyrics. Cuddle Magic is part theatrical, part dramatic, part playful, but in the end, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts – an assembly line of musicality. Album Review- Shortwave Party- “Where to Begin”

Posted on:

You can’t tell from the title, Where to Begin, whether that’s a question or an answer.  We’ll venture that it’s both, despite the question-mark’s absence. This is, after all, Shortwave Party’s debut EP; three tracks’ worth of jangle-happy, lofi surf bop.  Question – because we’re wondering what to expect from a grrl -fronted and lofi surf -backed –band; and Answer – because this is it, the first pass at defining the quintet’s sound, genre, and playground; this is where we start.

And like most lofi, there is a bit of ear-training required – You could mistake "jangly" for "spangly:  muddily-mixed and reverbed highs", and thus miss out on some of the very nice workings in these tracks; where guitars dominate the sonic landscape with both crunchy mass-strummings and prettily-picked highlights, reverberating and filling in the EQ curve.

Where to begin?  Let’s open like this EP, with the title track; a buoyantly-danceable, furiously-sparkling piece; full of rambunctious chord change-ups and assorted breaks; presided over by Shelby DuPerier’s excellent, darn-near-contralto vox.  A bright beginning for this collection, and sign of things to come.

Track 2, "Hopeless", is not as Emo as the title may imply.  Though a slower number, DuPerier’s vox once again leads us through the tune’s energetic guitars; her voice ranging romantically up and down the scale, letting us follow the song’s emotional peaks and troughs.

Which brings us to "Terez", perhaps the best and deepest track, and thus a natural to conclude this EP. With straight-forward, head-pumping verses, split up with minimalistic breaks; the guitars crunchily driving the chord progression, leaving DuPerier opportunity to favor us with some very nicely-done soaring passages.

Overall, if asked, we’ll say we’re happy to begin right here with Shortwave Party’s brand of jangle-happy beach bop. –Scott Osborn

Tracy’s CMJ 2012 Day 2: Sleepies, Mykki Blanco, Prince Rama, Maya Solovey, You Bred Raptors?, Dangerous Ponies + more

Posted on:

Day 2 began – oh, how unexpected! – on Ludlow Street, where Prince Rama were set to play the Cake Shop shortly after five. Getting there just pas four, I got to squeeze my way to the counter, pick up a beer and some Blue Ribbon swag (guilty as charged), and mainly, best part of all, catch NYC rapper Mykki Blanco (pictured) for half an hour of raunchy slams and menacing ‘acid punk’ raps, some freaky, most straightforward vulgar.. but oh, yeah, should have mentioned: when played right, that’s great in my books; none of that ‘positive’ buzzkill, just one hell of a slimy frantic performance backed up by the DJ every now and then, but taking on a fair few a cappellas. Glad I turned up a little early. – Read Tracy Mamoun’s full report here – pictured and streaming: Prince Rama.
