Chris Harford and the Band of Changes Headline at JB’s Aug. 27

Posted on:

Chris Harford and the revolving door of musicians known as the Band of Changes, featuring members of Dr. Dog and formerly of Ween, will be making a headlining appearance tonight at Johnny Brenda’s. The Bucks County local legend’s music has been a significant influence on the suburb’s music scene and beyond. With open, confessional lyrics that paint clear pictures zooming into focus on imperfections, he casts audio images that can lure audiences in. Harford and crew will also be supported by gentle giant Corey Duncan’s Oh! Pears and the energetic, born-in-the-wrong-time sounds of Toy Soldiers. Johnny Brenda’s 1201 Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Michael Colavita

Update: Dean Ween will definitely be on guitar tonight as well as Eric Slick on drums as part of the Band of Changes.

Buffalo Stance & Tadoma Screwing with Minds at JB’s Aug. 26

Posted on:

Man Man’s Jamey Robinson is the mastermind behind Buffalo Stance, a synth/Moog lead scenario melding pop-driven songs that thrive on a conveyor belt of keys and rhythms with a twisted carnival edge and funky dance beats. The instrumental combinations can sometimes seem disjointed until you realize that exploring the connections is part of the music within itself. Buffalo Stance is the perfect cross between a haunted castle and an arcade. One never knows what to expect or were to expect it. However, sometimes playing the game is fun enough. Tadoma will also be screwing with your mind this evening, creating a continuously evolving setting that grows on the listener while morphing throughout the process. Norwegian Arms & Laser Background Get Creative w/a Philly House Show Residency Tour in Sept. & Oct.

Posted on:

Below is a message from our wacky pals at Norwegian Arms & Laser Background. The two outfits have joined forces for a Philly House Show Residency Tour in September & October. However, it is not your normal run of shows as you will see from the deets below.

Hello fellow earthling.  To celebrate what may perhaps be our last year on this planet, we here at Laser Background & Norwegian Arms have created a project of unlikely proportions, pushing the boundaries of all parties involved to new heights of creativity.  For one month, from mid September – mid October, our two bands will perform once a week in different neighborhood house show spots within our fair city of Philadelphia.  Also featured will be local &/or touring bands that we think are great.  We will also adhere to a strict policy of rules for this project, which include actually living inside the houses we play in…

Rules:
1 – We must actually "reside" in said houses for two days prior to / including the show, creating a sort of couch-fort / tent type dwelling in a living room or other common area.  We may leave for work or other daily obligations, but absolutely must sleep there.
2 – During this time, we must adhere to a strict food / drug regimen for at least one of the two days.
3 – In & around our altered food / mind / couch fort states, we must write as much material as we can possibly be compelled to create.
4 – We must perform at least one song that we wrote during this period at the respective house that we have dwelled in.
5 – At the end of the entire project, a compilation of pertinent material & documentation of the process will be gathered for future release to the public.

Schedule:
* Friday September 14th @ Dreamcastle in South Philly w/ Circadian Rhythms
* Friday September 21st @ Double Deuce in North Philly w/ TBA
* Friday September 28th @ Pilam in West Philly w/ DRGN KING & Ladies Auxiliary
* Friday October 5th @ The OX in Kensington w/ Thin Hymns & Son Step

All of these shows are all ages, open to the public, BYO fun-things & optional suggested donation $1 – $5 sliding scale.  Please spread the word & tell your friends!  We want this to be as fun for everyone as it will be for Andy & Brendan.  Expect a lot of weird videos, recordings, drawings, etc. as these dates approach.  We are psyched!

Sincerely,
Norwegian Arms & Laser Background

Meek Mill Back Home at TLA Aug. 25

Posted on:

Fresh off the release of his massively successful mixtape, Dreamchasers 2, Philadelphia rapper Meek Mill is coming back home on his “Dreams and Nightmares” tour to support his forthcoming LP of the same name. Unfortunately, Mill’s official major label debut’srelease date has been pushed back from August 28th to October 30th. In a recent interview on San Francisco radio station WiLD 94.9, the local emcee explained his reasons for delaying his much anticipated debut as such: “A lot of people have been shying away from the real rapping and hip-hop. When I come out with an album, I want to have a classic album.” Fans can hope to hear some tracks from this yet to be finished “classic album” along with other favorites tonight at the TLA on South Street. Theatre of Living Arts, 334 South St., 7pm/11pm, $57.50, All Ages – Dan Brightcliffe

Purling Hiss & Bandname Close Out the R5 Free Summer Concert Series at Morgan’s Pier Aug. 25

Posted on:

Purling Hiss are headlining the last showcase that is part of R5’s Free Summer Concert series at Morgan’s Pier, ushering out the summer with creaky, crackly fuzz-rock whose colors bleed together like tie-dye. Led by lo-fi acolyte Mike Polizze (also from Birds of Maya), their recent single for Weathervane Music’s Shaking Through, "Lolita," is a departure from the band’s amorphous sound. Purling Hiss are still reminiscent of the early 90s, but the track sounds like it came from another band entirely. With a clear-cut swagger, and a plaintive, aggressive rant that rises above the grit of some truly raunchy guitar work, it’s strange to hear Purling Hiss sans static, fuzz pedals and muffled vocals, but they’ve made this rock-and-roll gem pretty much irresistible. They’re preceded tonight by Bandname, who definitely belong on somebody’s last-beach-trip-of-the-summer playlist. Morgan’s Pier, 221 N. Weekly Feature: Total Slacker – live at Public Assembly on 09.21

Posted on:

Somewhere, creeping through scattered reverberations of vocals and guitars, Total Slacker’s sonic beauty splinters through their sarcastic lyrics and lethargic lo-fi vibe. Tucker Rountree and Emily Jane belt out undeniable, neck-tingling harmonies atop steady drum grooves and searing guitar solos, leaving little to the imagination of the vast range of talents this band possesses. Total Slacker brings all the warmth and charisma of Summer of Love surf music, with a witty side that was all too ironic to rear its stylized head in the 60s. See them live at Public Assembly on 09.21.- Read Ed Guardaro’s interview with the band here.

Gangi previews upcoming album

Posted on:

With their substantial experience in music production, and a record label of their own (Office of Analog and Digital), sticking to DIY was an obvious choice for Matt Gangi & Eric Chramosta, the two members of the now LA-based growing psych-synth-rock force Gangi, who on October 2nd will be releasing a first album, ‘gesture is‘, as the aforementioned duo. The first couple of tracks being already available to stream (listen below!), one can get a taste of what the collaboration between these two longtime friends will amount to: with a skilfully built up dialogue between raw tastes from the past and present-day techniques, loops of a funky beat, droning melancholy and the glistening bubbles of a backdrop… one thing’s certain, got high expectations for the album: these guys are no amateurs. Speaking of which they’re offering their professional services to the most generous donators who’ll contribute to its funding (here!).

Weekend Warrior, August 24 – 26

Posted on:

I’m really excited to get a chance to chill out this Saturday, grab some brunch, visit the Gauguin, Cézanne, Matisse: Visions of Arcadia exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and swing by the 40th Street Summer Series with Adventuredrum, which seems quite appropriate since the first and last time the massive side project from Christopher Sean Powell (Need New Body/Man Man) performed was at PMA’s Art After 5. Pow Pow was surrounded by fellow Man Man bandmates Jamey Robinson and Matt Gibson, Chris Ward (Pattern Is Movement), Jason Kourkounis (Bardo Pond), Chris Wilson (Ted Leo & The Pharmacists), Ricardo Lagomasino (Many Arms), David Fishkin (Extreme Fishkin), Stephen Buono (Split Red), Koofreh Umoren (The Extraordinaires), Adam Hershberger (Bobby Zankel’s Warriors of the Wonderful Sound), Sam Belkowitz, Eugene Lew and Ellen Houle. I also saw that Arc in Round’s Matt Ricchini will be joining the group so it will be interesting to see who else Powell has recruited for this time around, but it’s guaranteed to be weird and funky and FREE so that’s all good in my book. Just hoping that the predicted isolated thunderstorms will hold off for their performance, but I’m guessing that they’ll be able to move it indoors at The Rotunda if things don’t go quite our way (though I’d obviously rather for it to be outside). Don’t miss out Adventuredrum tomorrow because who knows when you’ll get a chance to catch them again! 40th Street Summer Series, 40th & Walnut Sts., 6pm, Free All Ages (Photo by Joshua Camerote) – Q.D. Weekly Feature: Annie & the Beekeepers release album at Joe’s Pub on 08.30

Posted on:

Annie Lynch has a lot of traveling in her background, so she finds it easy to stir America’s pot with her music. Hailing from Cape Cod, studying at Berklee School of Music, and finally landing with her band The Beekeepers in Brooklyn, she’s made good use of her Bonneville, a car dear to her that has also made it on to her new record’s cover photo. Lynch’s music takes you through coffeehouse blues, extended folk jams, and torch songs that show off a confident, affecting voice. Annie’s been to a lot of places, and seen a lot of transformations, but her upcoming record, "My Bonneville," is her most ambitious yet. – Read Mike Levine’s Q&A with Annie here.

Introducing: Foot Patrol

Posted on:

Led by front man and blind rebel TJ Wade, Foot Patrol’s sexy and very healthy obsession with your feet is a breath of fresh air (not that The Foot Patrol would like that; they prefer your digits being a bit gnarly in terms of smell). The Foot Patrol’s album Pussyfooting is up-tempo, insanely solid in terms of rhythm, and the melodies are simply fantastic. On top of this, their live acts will knock you off your feet (there are so many opportunities for puns here). On stage, The Foot Patrol’s costume choices look like Roxy Music got bitch slapped by the goblins from “Labyrinth.” Everything about this band is perfect. With just one listen to The Foot Patrol you’ll break down and need a tow truck (concluding pun courtesy of Don Denham). – Taylor Browne

High Highs release video of “Once Around the House”

Posted on:

a couple of years ago, High Highs came from Australia to the Big Apple with a mission: get frantic New Yorkers to chillax a little. They are succeeding, and while they are at it they are spreading their gentle and soothing vibes in every corner of the world. The band is in the studio finishing their debut album, but found the time to realize this incredibly pretty video of the single "Once Around the House" – which is today’s Vimeo "staff pick".
