Boston band on the rise: Kid Mountain

Posted on:

Kid Mountain is an up and coming Boston indie band. Though hard to classify the exact genre of what they play, they like to call it Shoe-Pop. It has the ambience and reverby guitar and vocals of shoe gaze yet much more up beat with an acoustic guitar that fills everything out and gives everything a unique sound. They have an EP that came out in January called, Visitor’s Center and they are currently making their debut album due at the end of the summer. Though just a baby band this quartet has already played with the likes of Reptar, The Wandas, and many more bands that are currently big on the indie scene, so keep your eye on them! – (as posted in The Deli New England’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here).

Haunted Horses Going to Perform at Capitol Hill Block Party

Haunted Horses are getting to ready to play Capitol Hill Block Party on Sunday, July 22nd. For those who cannot wait until then, drive north to Vancouver, BC where they are playing the Zoo Zhop this Friday, July 13th.

The band, composed of members Colin Dawson and Myke Pelly, forge an unholy alliance between rhythm and noise. Dark noise is a more apt descriptor; the mood that pervades their music is one of sinister intensity and confusion. The possible comparisons to noise rock duo Lightning Bolt do not hold much weight because Haunted Horses trajectory appears fundamentally different: one of raising, praising and agitating spirits from the next realm with a calmness in their chaos, rather than all-out dance shreddage and ceaseless throttling of the drums.

Chanting moreso than shouting plays a role in the songs – such as in "The Veil," the closing track of their January release EP They Set Us Fevered Water. It is on the track "Pariah" that their signature concoction of tom-heavy rhythms melt together with wave upon wave of distorted guitar and shouts.

The bandmates cite their influence as "a woman who died in 1976 after unsucessful attempts to perform an exorcism upon her with psychotropic drugs." Perhaps a fitting image for listeners to plant in their mind as they navigate the band’s challenging and curious material.

Haunted Horses play at 5:45pm on the 22nd of July on the Cha Cha Stage. Stream "Pariah" below for an idea of the aural explosion to come. You can listen to They Set Us Fevered Water on their bandcamp page; it is available for digital download or cassette purchase. It is the last in a series of three cassettes that band released.

Free Download: “Disco Town” – Plumes

Posted on:

Check out this new feel good track to pickup your Monday called “Disco Town” from Plumes! So we honestly don’t know much about this band, but we’ve been jammin’ out to this song for months now. We keep coming back to their Bandcamp profile hoping for more tracks, and googling their name to see if any new info has popped up about them. Alas, the only info that we still have is that they may or may not have an official release coming out December 21, 2012. Oh, and there is another Montreal/NYC chamber pop act that goes by the same name. Hopefully when the presumed release date comes around, we’ll have more music to share with you. Until then, enjoy the free download! BTW: Please feel free to leave any info you might have in the comment section of this post.

NYC Record of the Month: Cuddle Magic – “Info Nympho”

Posted on:

Cuddle Magic, a 10 piece avant-pop orchestra split between Philly and Brooklyn, is about to celebrate the release of their third album "Info Nympho", which is available for streaming here. The band offers an array of soothing instruments (including glockenspiels, toy piano, and various strings and winds) along with the more standard guitar, bass, and drums. At once playful and haunting, the record thrives on the dual male and female vocals spinning intricate counter-melodies. The rhythm section provides a steady but never banal backdrop, while the less conventional instruments are allowed to take the forefront and guide the listener through truly stellar compositions. The variety of sounds, textures, and arrangement ideas, and the quality of the material showcase a band in its full maturity, mastering an impressive musical vocabulary, ranging from classical counterpoint to math rock influences, without disdaining occasional jazz chords and electronic elements. From opener "Disgrace Note"’s semi-robotic mallets in six fourths, to "Jason" (streaming below) and "Hadwrit", with their beautiful melody and organic arrangements featuring almost any instrument you can imagine, this is a record that manages to be original, moving and memorable – what else can you ask? Catch Cuddle Magic in Bushwick on July 13th, at a new venue named Muchmore. – Bob Raymonda

Weekly Feature: Clouder – live at The Grand Victory on 07.14

Posted on:

Eric Gilstrap (vocals), Steve Spinella (guitar), Matt Revie (guitar), Max Goransson (bass), and Jim Wood (drums) unite under the name Clouder. The band has been quite prolific, releasing their EP, "Serious Business," last September and full-length record, "Freakin’ Out the Squares" in February. The Brooklyn-based quintet rustles up the sounds, auras and cover art inspirations of music’s decades past, saturating the already-spacey musical atmosphere with even more psychedelic effects, and injecting them with elements of surf and garage rock. Live, they are a force to be reckoned with – see them at The Grand Victory on July 14. – Read Meijin Bruttomesso’s interview with the band here.

Woe Pushing Boundaries at KFN July 9

Posted on:

Woe will be supporting A Life Once Lost tonight for the second round of their July residency at Kung Fu Necktie. The black metal outfit fronted by Chris Griggs is currently working on their second album for Candlelight Records. Griggs’s last post to their website stated: “We have a title, we have quite a bit to say, but we are going to wait a little before saying more because everything is subject to change. What will not change, though, is that we are confident that the new material is our strongest to date, blending the best qualities of the past two albums and pushing the project into some new ground.” Hopefully Woe will share what they’ve been writing and demoing this evening when they push the boundaries of what KFN’s sound system and staff can handle. Father Figure play Mississippi Studios 7/11

Posted on:

It’s taken about a year, but Portland is finally giving Father Figure the respect their melodic brand of indie rock deserves. They’ve gone from sharing their catchy, at times anthemic songs with crowded houses and dive bars to some of the town’s more established venues, such as Ron Toms and Mississippi Studios. Since the release of their debut EP, “Tremmels”, they’ve been gaining momentum; the EP is an impressive debut, with enough reverb drenched lead lines and swooning vocal hooks you’ll catch yourself trying to sing along on the first listen. Catch them at Mississippi Studios this Wednesday night with Jason Anderson and Hungry Ghost.- Benjamin Toledo

The Blank Tapes Return with “I’m Back”

Posted on:

We know what you’re thinking: New music without a synthesizer? Absurd! The Blank Tapes, a San Francisco/Los Angeles band, proves that old school rock is never out-of-date. Singer-songwriter and The Blank Tapes’ frontman, Matt Adams, has produced nine albums across the country, though he currently resides in San Francisco.

Think The Black Keys or Guided By Voices, but a little more psychedelic. Adams’s nostalgic voice overlapped with a modern-sixties-like San Francisco sound will transcend you to familiarity though you may never have heard it before. Ever wonder what to play for the 8-hour drive along the scenic Hwy 1? Well this band should be added to that playlist.

Be sure to check out The Blank Tapes’ new album, I’m Back, out July 17 in advance of its live show at Amnesia in San Francisco on July 20.

Some truly decadent dark synths have been emerging from Harrisonburg VA with Mirror Kisses being the bearer of the sounds that have already gone global. The duo of George Clanton and Doug Sexton have been named Best New Band in America 2012 (repping VA) by the Boston Phoenix, so it’s truly not a shock that they were ultimately chosen by you as our Band of the Month, and they will definitely continue to rise. And because of all the fan love, they are giving away their first two albums "Soaking Wet" and "Dance Decree" as free downloads this month! We got a hold of George to find out more about Mirror Kisses. Here he tells us about China Crisis, Mustache Bash, and the power of 500 multicolor LEDs. Now onto the interview…

Young Savage Headlines Summer Slam 2012 at TLA July 7

Posted on:

Young Savage (a.k.a. Daeshawn Johnson) will be returning to the big stage of the TLA tonight, but this time his name gets the large print on its marquee as this evening’s headliner at Summer Slam 2012. It’s quite an accomplishment, especially for such a youthful emcee that only recently emerged on the Philly music scene in 2010. Drawing influences from rising local native Meek Mill as well as megastars like Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, Kanye West and Drake, the young Southwest Philly rapper is already proving to be one to keep tabs on. Young Savage originally refined his chops as a member of the Inner City Hustlers (I.C.H.), a crew that he has brought along with him tonight as an opening act for this one of hopefully many momentous occasions. Theatre of Living Arts, 334 South St., 6:30pm, $20 (+fees), All Ages – H.M. Kauffman

Young Statues Headline All Ages Show at The Fire July 7

Posted on:

Sprightly up-and-comers Young Statues are headlining an early, all ages show tonight at The Fire. The Philly, by way of Jersey, quintet creates post-puberty, pre-soul-crushing adulthood indie pop in the key of emo. The melodies and vocal delivery recall mid-aught emo bands like Days Away (who “evolved” into Good Old War) and Northstar (who “evolved” into Casino). Both of these bands journeyed from their roots into folk-country tinged acts, but Young Statues’ sound fits right in the middle of that evolution. They are not overtly emo, though the pensive lyrics and yearning tenor are notably present. (I would like to mention that when I say emo, I am not doing so in a derogatory way.)  Young Statues are catchy without being terribly predictable. Yes, their lyrics could make great Facebook statuses, but relatability is not necessarily a negative – it certainly has its upside. The band is playing a couple shows this summer still riding on their self-titled debut released last year via Run For Cover Records, as well as an acoustic EP that they put out in February. Opening this show is Bright and Early, a band who is extremely comfortable in their pop-punk skin, so much so that they seem to have written a manifesto both coddling and decrying their entire “scene.” They even quote Midtown, both musically and lyrically – twice in their first two songs. Similar to Young Statues, they released an acoustic, or unplugged, EP back in January for free. The show also includes the surprising technicality of the extremely young band Edelweiss from Stroudsburg, PA. They make mathy-spacey-dark-pop-rock ready made to be eaten up by the New York scene. This is a showcase full of young talent for all agers as well as the 21+ crowd (just keep it legal y’all). The Fire, 412 W. Girard Ave., 5pm, $5, All Ages – Adam G.
