From the NYC digital submissions: Jerry Paper’s music for robots

Posted on:

"People can care for each other, otherwise we’re just totally f*cked." I couldn’t have said it better had I tried, which I suppose is why I leave the gently rocking robot space jams to experts like L. W. Nathan.

In his latest project, Jerry Paper, using a combination of DX-7-style keys and canned calypso beats, the Brooklyn artist sounds something like what robots might listen to when doing their grocery shopping. Songs like ‘Forget It’ from his first full-length ‘Vol. 1’ project an icy coolness to the artist’s musings on humanity’s odd behaviors (like grocery shopping), while sometimes unexpectedly recalling McCartney’s solo adventures with bursts of harmonic energy. As strange as some of this record can sit, I find it oddly comforting, and I can only imagine how fun this all must be live. Which is why I’ll need to check him out as soon as he lands his spaceship back on Earth – i.e. on August 7th at Big Snow with Psychobuildings and Swanifant. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets) – This artist submitted music for review here.

Language Room Return Home on 8/4 For Gig @ ND

Posted on:

Austin based Indie/Alt band Language Room self-released their newest EP, Skin & Heart & Lungs, earlier this year. With the help of their fans on Kickstarter, they raised enough money to go into the studio with mega-producer Dwight Baker and I think the results show for themselves. With another successful Kickstarter campaign, they raised enough money to get a tour underway and they will be coming back home to Austin, Texas on 8/4 for a set at ND. These guys have worked hard and done it the right way. They deserve all your support on that night. Plus, why wouldn’t you want to see this live?

Dangerous Ponies & Ghost Light Are Worth Losing Sleep Over at JB’s July 31

Posted on:

If you’ve ever been to a Dangerous Ponies show, then you should know that it’s bound to be a good time. And tonight at Johnny Brenda’s should be no different, except you might be treated to some new tunes. The colorful guys and gals are working on a new album at The Headroom, and you should expect a new surf rock vibe coming through your speakers in the not-so-distant future as well as a new bassist, who will be joining the traveling party. It’s also being produced by Algernon Cadwallader’s Joe Reinhardt. Barrett Lindgren’s Ghost Light will be kicking things off this evening. His EP Awful Things is The Deli Philly’s July Album of the Month, and you should definitely take a listen to it HERE. However, his tunes will be taking on a life of its own with the help of his recently recruited backing band. This Tuesday night show is definitely worth sacrificing some sleep. Blackbird Blackbird Releases New Mix, EP Out in October

Posted on:

If you asked me the last song worthy of another remix, I’d say Adele’s "Rolling In The Deep." Yet, San Francisco’s moody, trip-hop-gazer Blackbird Blackbird pulls it off. Listen and download here.

Mikey Maramag aka Blackbird Blackbird landed on every blog’s best list with his debut album Summer Heart. Just back from European tour, Blackbird Blackbird has signed to San Francisco label Lavish Habits, which will release his new EP Boracay Planet on October 16. Until then, his original mix "Happy With You" will keep you dancing.

The Wicked Release Debut Full-Length Record August 9th

Posted on:

Frighten up your summer afternoon with a ghastly good record from The Wicked, a gypsy-inspired gothic punk duo from Salem, Massachusetts. Their debut full-length album, “Never Trust the Dead,” out August 9th, shows the duo’s improved compositional maturity, expanding from the two-instrument elegies that defined their demo EP “In Front of My Eyes,” and blossoming into hard-boiled noir nuggets set to a two-step percussive feel. Emerging single “Elevator” forces dancing feet into motion with a happenin’ swing feel and modern punk squeal, while deliciously haunting vocal melodies twist and soar over the top like flying snakes. Do not miss this record, and keep an eye out for the locals on tour. – Dean Shakked

The Shrine’s ‘Primitive Blast’

Posted on:

Certified skater’s choice, The Shrine is a long-haired L.A-based three-piece at a border between two flavours of heavy which they define as ‘psychedelic violence’; three dudes who go digging into their favourite blasts a la MC5 & Co, ‘all-American’ R&rR to bring their loud, furious, but mainly OH-SO-SATISFYING fuzz-freak show to a present where clicks disappear for the sake of some messy head-banging antics made of string-shredding prowesses and efx abuse. After a debut 7” (produced by Black Flag bass player Chuck Dukowski) released in 2010, the band dropped a couple of weeks ago (July 10th) a first album, Primitive Blast, a restless trash-punk-something nine-track sample of their range. You can listen to demo versions of those on bandcamp, and purchase the record here. Before they head for Europe with Fu Manchu in September, note that The Shrine will be on stage at The Satellite on August 4th, and headlining a show at The 3 Clubs on August 10th. – Tracy Mamoun

Nashville Cream Announces Sixth Annual Anniversary Party

Posted on:

If you still haven’t bought your tickets to the sixth annual Nashville Cream anniversary/birthday bash, it’s probably because you haven’t checked out the lineup yet. Taking place at Mercy Lounge and the High Watt, the party spans two venues for the price of one $8 ticket. At the Mercy Lounge, Natural Child, Pujol, and Sparkle City DJs have been announced as the evening entertainment, while over at the High Watt, Wild Club and Future Unlimited will be followed by the weekly Y2K dance party. And, just to heighten the sense of mystery and anticipation, there is still at least one more special guest that is set to be announced.

In addition to hours of music, the party will feature the typical blowout essentials: booze, prizes, dancing, liquor, a photo booth, free posters, and (most importantly) alcohol. Everything takes place at 9 pm on August 25th. You can get tickets here or at Grimey’s, The Groove Record Shop, or Parlour & Juke Salon. — Brianne Turner

Kingdom of the Holy Sun Have A Gig At The Rendezvous This Saturday

Posted on:

Kingdom of the Holy Sun have an up and coming performance this weekend at the Rendezvous. They are on the bill alongside Levator and Prescription Pills.

Self-dubbed as "psychedelic garage and shoegaze," their music cultivates an environment that is both raw and expressive. Every track feels spiritially imbued; they have taken the rock in garage rock, slowed it down, and made their songs self-contained rituals.

Their latest release Pharmacokinetics came out last month. Its four songs exhibit the persistent themes of exploration and wonder – there is a sense of awe planted in the singer’s voice. He immediately draws comparison to the late Jim Morrison of The Doors with his poetic, washed out vocal style. Kingdom of the Holy Sun move in a decidedly different direction musically though; their sonic experiments are less pop-focused and chorus-intensive.

The eponymous track "Pharmacokinetics" ushers itself along at a deliberate pace, unfurling amid a steady evolution of repetitive rhythms and bright melodies. Imagine the sun rising at dawn, amid a hazy film of fog blanketing the sky.

Kingdom of the Holy Sun will appear on stage this Saturday, August 4th at the Rendezvous. Doors are at 9:00pm and tickets cost $5. Give a listen to "Pharmacokinetics" below and carry onto their bandcamp to navigate the rest of the release – as well as their two other albums.
