If you’ve ever checked out the music of recent Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner Ecce Shnak, then you’d expect nothing less than really peculiar answers to our latest set of interview questions. Well, you can read their second draft HERE, since they deemed the first one to be “terribly silly.” Would anyone like to translate parts of it for us? ;o)
The Rocketboys Celebrate Their Second LP Release This Friday at ND
The Rocketboys, a staple of the Austin indie scene, will be headlining a show at ND Friday night to celebrate the release of their second LP, Build Anyway. Despite not having a full-time drummer in their lineup, the Rocketboys utilize front-man Brandon Kinder’s powerful pipes and keyboardist Justin Wiseman’s crafty melodies to deliver an effective follow-up to 2009’s 20,000 Ghosts, their debut LP. Bassist Josh Campbell ties this one together with his tight, driving grooves, leaving everyone who listens with just one question: who wouldn’t want to drum for these guys?
Young NYC sounds: Grand Rapids’ 3 upcoming shows
Having already opened for Smith Westerns, Chairlift, and Surfer Blood, the country and 90s-influenced Grand Rapids (the band, not the city in west Michigan) is doing quite well for a bunch of early 20-somethings. The group formed when childhood friends Dan Lardner and Peter Baumann, both on guitar, moved from New Jersey to the East Village, soon meeting up with the band’s female halves of Alex Niemetz and Clara Balzary, bass and drums, respectively. The quartet released a self-titled EP in 2011, combining Stephen Malkmus vocal hooks with garage rock guitars. The group has 3 upcoming shows in NYC, (see here), we recommend the show at Mercury Lounge on June 24 with NYC punk rockers Dirty Fences.
Former Belle’s Last Hurrah Before Hitting the Studio at KFN June 6
The year and a half of playing and promoting songs from their Sounds from the Underground EP is coming to an end for Former Belle since tonight will be their last full band show before they step into the studio to work on their first full-length Cathedral. And they’re set to make sure that Kung Fu Necktie will be abuzz with plenty of new tunes. Former Belle’s biggest moment of the year thus far has been touring Europe with Peasant in support of the folk crooner’s latest Bound for Glory. And their good friend will be returning the favor before he packs his bags for a move to NYC. Add in an opening set from Bridge Underwater, and you have an entertaining hump day hang. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $8, 21+ – Bill McThrill

The band’s latest 7”, Health is the New Drug, was released in February of this year and features a title track that masterfully toes the line between shoegaze, psycadelic and progressive rock, using spacy synths to accompany one hell of a shredding lead guitar.

Adventuredrum Return on Aug. 25 at 40th Street Summer Series
We are very happy to see the return of Adventuredrum, the massive side project from Need New Body/Man Man’s Christopher Sean Powell a.k.a. Pow Pow. The group made their public debut in March at Philadelphia Art Museum’s Art After 5, and Powell was joined by fellow Man Man bandmates Jamey Robinson and Matt Gibson, Chris Ward (Pattern Is Movement), Jason Kourkounis (Bardo Pond), Chris Wilson (Ted Leo & The Pharmacists), Ricardo Lagomasino (Many Arms), David Fishkin (Extreme Fishkin), Stephen Buono (Split Red), Koofreh Umoren (The Extraordinaires), Adam Hershberger (Bobby Zankel’s Warriors of the Wonderful Sound), Sam Belkowitz, Eugene Lew and Ellen Houle. Adventuredrum will be making their sophomore performance on Saturday, August 25 as part of the annual 40th Street Summer Series which will also be hosting Slavic Soul Party (June 23), Sun Ra Arkestra (July 28), and Bobby Zankel’s Warriors of the Wonderful Sound featuring Dave Liebman and Odean Pope performing John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme (September 22). There will be complimentary Rita’s Water Ice while supplies last, and Tsirkus Fotografika (or the “Photographic Circus”) will bring their antique mobile portrait studio to offer free antique photos to concertgoers for the June and July events. All this sounds really fun! Just hope that the weather has mercy on us.
Megafauna releases “Love Project” EP + announces full length
Austin based rock trio Megafauna offer an interesting melange of rock’n’roll (drums, guitar solos), pop (Dani Nelf’s beautiful melodies and voice, at times reminiscent of Bjork) and psych rock (production and overall musical approach). It must be ssaid that Dani – originally from Brooklyn – also plays guitar with impressive dexterity. The band is prepping their full-length follow up to their 2010 debut album "Larger Than Human." and in the meantime they are releasing a digital 3 track "Love Project" EP (streaming below), which sounds very promising indeed, showcasing the diverse range of styles and influences that drive the band’s sound. Don’t miss these guys live!
NYC band on the rise: BLONDS announces debut album “The Bad Ones”
Probably because they only recently relocated to NYC (they originally hail from Florida), we somehow missed BLONDS‘ rise to semi-notoriety. The duo, comprised of dating, non-blonde couple Cari Rae and Jordy Asher, is partial to slow tempos and intense, almost Lynchian dreamy atmoshperes. A rather sexy video of the Portishead-ish single "206" raised their profile in the past winter, and to take things to the next level the band is now releasing this single "RUN" from the upcoming full length album "The Bad Ones". We can’t help but notice spaghetti Western references both in the record’s title and in the single, which sounds very much like a revisitation of Morricone’s dramatic approach to Country’n’Western music. This band seems to have a rather big music vocabulary at their disposal, and this is a very good sign – looking forward to the summer release.
Found in our digital submissions: Mike Higbee
Mike Higbee is the ghost of Roy Orbison riding on Hank Williams’ horse over to the saloon for a cold, hard drink. A man who most likely grew up listening to the King from his hometown of Paris, and dreaming of the ‘Donna’ of Ritche Valens’ genius, Higbee has resurrected the spirit of Nashville for New York in his latest LP ‘Secret Life.’
From accordion-backed love songs (Love of My Life) to raucous barnburners like the eponymous ‘Secret Life,’ and even covering a song by Parisian singer Manu Chao (‘La Primavera’), Higbee proves he’s up to the task of carving out a complete statement by re-shaping the forgotten ghosts of rustic Americana to his liking.
Perhaps it took someone born in Paris to reinvent our own history for us. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets) – This music was submitted digitally to The Deli here.
