The Chairman Dances CD Release Show at KFN May 25

Posted on:

After releasing an impressive 15-track LP Long Lost/A History of Iniquity last year, The Chairman Dances wasted little time in setting out on their sophomore effort. The end result that these art rockers created is The Promise, a 10-song album centered around two fictional married couples: one at the start of their relationship and the other at the end. The band also cut a music video for its single A Voice in the Night (below), which was directed by Jonathon Brown. The Chairman Dances will be joined at their CD release celebration by The Mendles, who recently released a new music video for their track “Yes Sir,” which is available on their recent split album with Mean Cat. It should also be interesting when The Quelle Source take the stage since guest drummer Mark Rybaltowski will be filling in on drums for the first time since 2008. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 7:30pm, $8, 21+ – Bill McThrill

Electronic one man band j.viewz just premiered this video of his super-uplifting (and also super simple) song "Rivers and Homes" – which makes us feel like we need more friends. Kudos to director Shelly Carmel who created this visual piece using 2000 photos, 300 fans, and no computer fakery! Or at least so she says. But how do yo udo this without a computer??

NYC Artists on the rise: XNY plays Rockwood on May 31

Posted on:

XNY have the kind of chemistry that has to make other bands jealous. It isn’t every day that you hear something so large and well thought out, channeled through such piecemeal instrumentation. On the surface, it’s very simple. Singer Pam Autuori sings her tensions and releases over Jacob Schrieiber’s booms and grooves… but really, these are some heroic jams that carve out an enormous territory with each song. On their new record ‘Through the Wall,’ the band’s production has increased in scope, but the songs maintain a deeply felt relationship between these old friends. Songs ‘Another Way’ and ‘Make Me’ especially have a searing edge that tears you open with lyrics that come crashing through Jacob’s kit, and grooves that belie the band’s supposed limitations. Make no mistake. With just two members, XNY have managed to build a world larger than most ensembles plenty times their size. – See them when they play May 31 at Rockwood Music Hall. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Brooklyn bass/drum wizards Hank and Cupcakes have a lot to celebrate. Besides achieving status as official Brooklynites – since they moved from Tel Aviv three years ago – the pair is about to release their first full length album, “Naked,” due out on June 1. In keeping with their passion for inventive music that moves bodies, “Naked” features eleven tracks of vibrant vocals, danceable rhythms, crazy bass-generated effects, and a fusion of electronic, rap, rock, and techno elements, binding the multifaceted sounds of the Brooklyn music scene into one record, while adding a fresh, funky edge of their own. The entire album is streaming here on Soundcloud – check out the new single, “Liquid Mercury,” and highlight tracks, ultra-dancey “Born Again,” hip-hop/ electro-fusion track, “Aint’ Not Love” (streaming below) sassy and grooving “HIT,” hypnotic “Sweet Potion,” and bass-centric “Pleasure Town.” The duo begins their release tour next week. Skyline Pigeons: relishing life anew

Posted on:

As much as the concept of writing an album is many times orchestrated by a desire to unify some arbitrary theme, there are instances when that idea emerges because of pure circumstance. House of Mysteries, the debut release by Skyline Pigeons, was concocted after sisters Roxanne and Caroline Teti went through the unfortunate event of losing their home after a calamitous wild fire in Santa Barbara. So, in a sense, they took the time to reflect after that traumatic experience and decided to channel their grief toward healing by creative expression. Through Roxanne and Caroline’s harmonic interplay, House of Mysteries never goes through the motions, opting to take a musical journey that takes them down different paths – starry-eyed folk arrangements, jagged garage rock, arpeggiated synth effects and even some fine ol’ country twang all make appearances. Supervised by notable producer Ryan Hedlock, it never fails to evoke these shimmering moments of impermanence, which considering the surprises life can take, is something the Teti sisters never take for granted in their versatile compositions. They’ll be celebrating the CD release of House of Mysteries with a performance on Molly Malone’s on June 1st. – Juan Edgardo Rodríguez (@juanerodriguez)
