Avant-garde music duo Blues Control (a.k.a. Lea Cho and Russ Waterhouse) recently premiered their new track “Iron Pigs” via Ad Hoc, which you can listen to and download for free below. It’s off their upcoming fourth full-length album Valley Tangents that will be released on June 19 via Drag City. They’ll be performing next in Philly on June 22 at PhilaMOCA with local experimentalists Birds of Maya and Slow Tongued Beauty.
Brooklyn girls with seriously psychedelic chops: Heliotropes
I don’t know why, it’s surely just some kind of preconception, but when we heard the phased out, psychedelic blues of Heliotropes we almost immediately imagined a bunch of bearded, long haired dudes behind the instruments. Well, it turns out this is an all girl, non-bearded band, whose music would work perfectly on a bill between Widowspeak and Naam. The quartet released their debut 7" in November 2011 and will celebrate the release of the new 12" entitled "Moonlite" (streaming below) on May 22 at The Knitting Factory.
Fang Island announces sophomore album “Major”
Lovers of unconventional rock music will be delighted to hear that the high fivers of indie-prog-rock par excelence – Brooklyn’s Fang Island – will be soon back with a new album, entitled "Major," and scheduled for a July release. Although there isn’t much to listen to yet (just the soundtrack of this teaser video) the band has released a 1k bullet point explanation of the album title, which will surely get their biggest fans to imagine the entire record track by track, chord by chord, guitar solo by guitar solo – lack of lyrics makes this task much easier, actually…
The Spinto Band Kick Off Their May Residency at KFN May 8
We’ve always been a little conflicted about covering Wilmington, DE’s The Spinto Band, but not because we don’t like them. On the contrary, we seriously dig their heartwarming, feel good indie pop. It’s just that The Deli Philly’s mission is to be a resource for Philadelphia area musical artists and fans, and obviously the band being from Wilmington doesn’t exactly fall under that category. However, as our site gets longer in the tooth, it continues to evolve. And we realize that though some acts don’t necessarily live in our beloved city it doesn’t mean that they haven’t invested a lot of their time and energy to help shape the landscape of Philly’s music scene. That’s why we felt like it was about time to open up our borders of coverage a bit to these hard-working, talented acts whose cities aren’t represented by a branch of The Deli. So giving some long overdue love to Philly’s adopted sons The Spinto Band, who will be celebrating the recent release of their latest album Shy Pursuit with a residency every Tuesday night for the rest of this month at Kung Fu Necktie, would be as good of a time as any to start. The Delawarean outfit has also done a nice job of curating the opening slots for each of their evenings. Tonight they’ll be joined by ex-Teeth members’ latest incarnation Purples and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s Alec Ounsworth. The Spinto Band has also invited Nightlands, Via Audio, The Extraordinaires, Heyward Howkins, Cheers Elephant and Langor to hang with them this May. Come out and help them kick things off tonight at KFN! But first, check out the band’s adorable music video for their track “Take It” below. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $8, 21+ – Q.D. GravelRoad’s “Psychadelta” Delivers Old School Jams
GravelRoad’s latest album Psychadelta sounds way less psych and way more Clutch meets the blues meets jam band meets old time rock ‘n’ roll. Going for an “acid blues” feel, GravelRoad digs deep in the grit, kicking the album off with “Devil Eyes”. The twangy guitar and steady drum serve well with the muddy vocals that are half spoken and half wailed in a classic blues way. “Furry” is a purely instrumental jam that melts into “In The Woods” which has an almost country sound. “Caves” sounds like a loner on the road; the instruments clashing together creating a wild bird sound, the vocals echoing, the guitars sad. The boogie groove in “Let Me Hold You” gives a real glimpse into the Mississippi blues form that GravelRoad prides themselves on. When I first started listening to Psychadelta, I wasn’t in love. The more I listened, however, the more I could picture myself in a dirty saloon type of bar, drinking whiskey with the guys (or alone), and the more I liked it.
Culture Cringe release “Girls Night Out” @ 3 Brothers, 5/11
There’s a ton of great stuff coming up this Friday that we’d like to see (including Honey Locust’s EP release at The High Watt, The Jompson Brothers and Modoc at 12th & Porter and Andrew Combs at The Basement), but this is a must: Culture Cringe, a Murfreesboro media outlet that emulates Third Man Records in that it releases local artists’ projects, including music and film, in really badass ways, is celebrating their first release at 3 Brothers in Murfreesboro. It’s the film “Girls Night Out,” which has already made an appearance at The 5 Spot and is styled after the ’80s slasher genre. Though it won’t be screened at 3 Brothers since it’s an all-ages event, it will be sold – on VHS. Copies are limited, blood red copies even more so, so get there early and expect giveaways and weird stuff. Kelly Kerr & the Distractions and Epic Ditch will be playing. 8 p.m.
Click here to see a Murfreesboro Pulse interview with three of the four faces of Culture Cringe and find out more about the film, the release and what these guys do.

NYC/Philly Artists on the rise: Cuddle Magic (Deli Best of NYC #77)
Composed entirely by classically trained musicians (6 of them), and based in Brooklyn and Philly, Cuddle Magic (#77 in our latest Best of NYC Poll for emerging artists) has been spreading their fascinating music through the world since 2008. Their latest release, "Info Nymph," is a piece of art full of stories, literature and artwork, wrapped into an (very) unusual take on traditional songwriting. The band is both intense and soft, wrapping you snuggly with their mellow vocals while keeping you interested and connected through their quirky orchestrations. – CM
