Spacin’ Album Release Show at KFN May 13
Spacin’ is the pet project from Birds of Maya’s Jason Killinger, and he has recruited Acid Kicks’ Sean Hamilton, Paul Sukeena and Eva Killinger (Jason’s wife) to flesh out his already rad, lo-fi demos and produce groovy Velvet Underground-esque stoner rock party anthems perfect for rollin’ bones and skipping class. It’s raw, carefree rock ‘n’ roll at its finest that may inspire a new generation of shaggy, long-haired muscle car enthusiasts cruising around your local bowling alleys and strip malls, and I really can’t get enough of it. Spacin’ will be celebrating the release of their debut album Deep Thuds (out via Richie Records) tonight at Kung Fu Necktie with Hippy Johnny (the new venture from pals/co-workers Dan Svizeny a.k.a. Cough Cool and Brendan Codey) and Real Good. Smoke ‘em if ya got ‘em! Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $2, 21+ – Q.D. Tran
DaQuan (Sgt. Sass) & MC Ice Rod at PhilaMOCA May 13
DaQuan, one half of local underground queer hip hop duo Sgt. Sass, will set off the Mother’s Day party tonight at PhilaMOCA. DaQuan has been building an impressive discography outside of Sgt. Sass’s party friendly jams. His most recent tape, The W.A.R.: Warrior Art Rebel, is a collection of tracks produced by DJ Rx with lyrics based on a short story by DaQuan, which fans can read HERE. Headlining the show is MC Ice Rod, doing his Chatroulette freestyle dorm room party…yes this is exactly what you think. Rod decorates the stage with typical college dorm room accessories (Bob Marley and Pulp Fiction posters) and does improvised raps about the people he comes across on Chatroulette. They’ll also be joined by Brooklyn’s I.K.P. (Infamous King of Positivity). So treat your mom to some hip hop weirdness at the old mausoleum. Spring 2012 Art Star Craft Bazaar at Penn’s Landing May 12 & 13
Still trying to find the perfect gift for mom? Fortunately, the Spring 2012 Art Star Craft Bazaar at Penn’s Landing has got you covered. Today and Tomorrow, over 140 local and national vendors who specialize in all kinds of multimedia art will be selling their goods along the waterfront. But even if you have your Mother’s Day shopping taken care of, head down anyway to scope out the handmade goods, enjoy food from some local restaurants, and check out some of the many bands that will be playing the Philebrity sponsored stage.
When Attia Taylor headlines this afternoon, it will be a nice warm-up for when she opens for cultish Polyphonic Spree at the TLA in two weeks. And since Oh! Pears are scheduled to play right before her, it might be a good opportunity for Taylor and Corey Duncan to perform their collaboration “Born in Clouds.” Josh Olmstead’s (BC Camplight, Summer Fiction) new project Archives of Oblivion will likely be mixing it up between Grooved Ware 40th Anniversary homage to albums from the 70s and some of their own original material. Add in the whimsical blues folk of Joe Duffy, the female-fronted alt folk of Swedeland, and the harmonious melodies of Olive Juice, and you’ll have a chilled out day along the waterfront.
Bring a pair of dancing shoes on Sunday since City Rain are still delivering the supercharged vibrations brought on by their latest EP Watch Out, and Blayer Pointdujour & The Rockers Galore will definitely feed off the energy when they headline and play some of the reggae and hip hop heavy beats from their debut EP Port-Au-Prince. And if you’re looking for a soul-cleansing real good time, be sure to come out early to enter the church of The Homophones where frontman Jason Ferraro will be groovin’ along with you while the band plays some of their newer material from their Grey Ghost EP as well as unreleased tunes like “I Feel Your Pain.” The rest of Sunday will be rounded out by the Hawaiian vibrations of Slowey + The Boats, the panty-dropping harmonies of Market East, and the grunge-y Southern rock of Sherman the Band. The Last Temptations to Follow-up Promising Debut in July
Vocalist Hannah Amdahl and guitarist Robert Kemp are living proof that road trips can lead to great things. The duo played music together in Florida under the name of Hannah and the Halfway House, when they decided to pack it up and make the trek to Seattle, listening to “Highway to Hell” upon crossing each state line. Once in Seattle, the pair connected with percussionist Alex Noble, bassist Michael Plotke, and engineer David Miner, forming a new indie pop sound in The Last Temptations.
There is something very sassy about the group’s six track Penny Dreadfuls. The record, heavy with witty lyrics, kicks off with “Trigger Finger”. The track immediately sucks the listener in with its straightforward rifts, addictive beat, and satisfying breakdowns. Hannah’s voice is sultry as she sings “I don’t want to possess you I just want to caress you sometimes. I don’t want to control you, I just want to own you sometimes.” The delicate strumming of guitar gives way to the clear and clever lyrics “I’m not a social butterfly, I’m barely a social sly” in the moody “Police State”. The tune features a few different change ups which makes for a tantalizing ride. “Southern Charm” is also, well, charming. The drum intro grabs the audience’s attention and creates a build up as each instrument is layered on. The disc also features the somewhat beachy “Big Ben Butcher”, the gritty “Share Your Opinions” and the chill “Predatory Glances”.
The Last Tempations have created a brassy and enticing debut album in Penny Dreadfuls and will be following it up with a new single this July. Besides creating more tantalizing tracks, the group has the goal of rockin’ out to “Highway to Hell” in all 48 continental states.

Weekly Feature: The Denzels play The Deli’s B.E.A.F. Indie Rock Stage on May 25
Formerly called The Goods, The Denzels, invigorated with the name change, are ready to kick ass and take names with their dangerously addictive music. The songs are absolutely pop at heart with endearing hooks and jangly guitars, but there’s an edge that makes them emanate a New York kind of cool. The music is by no means a daunting or pretentious hipness, as the tunes are astoundingly accessible with vintage elements from yesteryear; they cite The Smiths and ‘50s girl groups as influences while pulling in modern peers such as Deerhunter into the mix. The quintet sounds like a more punk-spiked, less distorted version of The Strokes – check out the band’s latest EP, "Easy Tiger," which is generously offered for free on Bandcamp. The five tracks are a clarified, upbeat amalgamation of pop and rock music from the ‘50s to the present day. – Read Nancy Chow’s interview with the band here. See The Denzels live at The Deli’s B.E.A.F.on May 25 at Spike Hill with The Can’t Tells, Big Ups and more.
Weekly Feature: Mother Feather announces live EP + plays Nova Festival in the UK
Here’s an excerpt from the interviewed The Deli did with self described "Pop Cock Rock" NYC band Mother Feather (who placed at #78 in our latest Best of NYC Poll for Emerging Artists): "We could not be more excited to perform at the Nova Festival in the UK this July. To help support the trip, we will be releasing a live EP through our website that will only be available during the month of June. It will include some unreleased tracks as well as the Futures dance remix of “Mother Feather.” – Read Jen Margott full interview here. (photo by Steve Meyer)
The Michael J. Epstein Memorial Library — “Amylee” Music Video
The Michael J. Epstein Memorial Library’s “Amylee” music video, the first music video by the indie ensemble pop band, was released this week. "Amylee" is the lead track on MJEML’s debut LP, Volume One.
Watch as the Michael J Epstein Memorial Library leads the battle against dolphin invaders as they launch an attack to try and take over the Earth (there’s also a space shark thrown into the mix). Documentary filmmaker Dan St. Germain has brought to life yet another in a long line of madcap/eccentrically brilliant ideas of Michael J Epstein. The song is pretty damn good, too. –Chrissy Prisco
Conveyor announces full length, release at Mercury on 06.28
Get off the plane, and you’ll find you’ve landed in an entirely new kind of space, occupied by polyrhythmic chants and otherworldly acoustic strumming. I like bands like this. Conveyor does that rare thing where an entirely unique world is sculpted from the abbreviated tendencies of cultures from all over the world. Their palette places FM drones beside zither strumming in ‘Mane’ (streaming below), and the sunny cheerfulness of 4 part harmonies on tracks like ‘mukraker.’ All of this takes place within the binding of their debut self-titled LP coming out July 17th off Paper Garden Records.
The party hasn’t ventured far from the band’s initial percolations in their ‘Sun Ray’ EP. Conveyor was already at home in their skin then. What’s amazing to me is that no matter how many bizarro instruments they pull into their mix, the sound is still entirely their own. So, once you do leave for your flight… you’ll find a very large country to explore.
Catch the band at their record release party at Mercury Lounge on June 28th. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)
Jeans Wilder announces sophomore album
Jeans Wilder is the solo project of Andrew Caddick (formerly of Fantastic Magic). “Limeade,” the first single off his upcoming sophomore release, Totally, is the perfect anthem to a SoCal summer. Caddick mixes janglin’ surf guitar riffs with sunny ‘60s pop and stony grunge to produce a laidback, lo-fi track. He’s been creating music under this moniker since 2008 and released his buzzworthy debut Nice Trash LP in the latter part of 2010. Where his previous releases focus on minimalism with sparse instrumentation, his second album delivers a more fleshed out, rounder sound, while still focusing on the Caddick’s voice. Totally is slated for a June 26th release via Everloving Records. – Katrina Nattress
