Delicate Steve and People Get Ready at Mercury on 05.17 (tonight)

Posted on:

Tonight Thursday May 17, Delicate Steve and People Get Ready will be taking the stage at Mercury Lounge. Big things have been in the works for headliner Delicate Steve (aka Steve Marion), who’s been covered repeatedly in our blog and magazine, and played our B.E.A.F. 2011 — he’ll drop new album "Positive Force" on July 10th. In support of this new effort, the multi-instrumentalist will be touring the US (plus one stop at UK End of the Road Festival) through August. Included are dates alongside Yeasayer and tUnE-yArDs, plus a 4-day installation across New York.

People Get Ready, a sort of combo dance group and indie act, is a bit of an all-star cast with a fantastic live show and it’s bound to explode soon. Frontman Steve Reker toured as a dancer/guitarist with David Byrne and drummer Luke Fasano is formerly of Yeasayer. Tons of hook and layered melodies mark this indie act, that will be releasing debut later this year, so be on the look out. – Corinne Bagish

Warm Weather gives “Glee” a run for their money

Posted on:

Take a listen to one of the EP’s by LA-based band Warm Weather and you will quickly catch yourself imagining your life as a musical. Thankfully it is none of that tiresome "Glee" business, but instead it is a musical where dazzlingly harmonies and jubilant indie rock sounds make every day feel like Christmas. Of course all of your days are also filled with sunshine. This bewitching world that the guys of Warm Weather create with their music is fueled by a lot of spunk and roots in collegiate acapella groups. Before moving out to LA, Justin Lerman, Ryan Pollie and Brendan Lynch-Salamon were all studying music at East Coast colleges and participating in acaeplla groups. That experience plays big part in Warm Weather’s sound. Overall the guys create a clean pop sound with wholesome vocals, but the amazing harmonious and seamless mix of folkly banjo sounds on some songs and tropical sounds reminiscent of Vampire Weekend on others is what makes them stand out. The songs can be a bit quirky at times, but are not trivial. Warm Weather is in the midst of an East Coast tour supporting their two EPs, last year’s "Dances" and the follow-up "Looking Through." – Karla Hernández

Darlingside to Play NYC’s Mercury Lounge Friday, May 25

Posted on:

Northampton, MA based string-rock quintet Darlingside is playing at the Mercury Lounge in NYC Friday, May 25.

A creative and innovative group of musicians, Darlingside captures an original sound as they carefully weave together genres of rock, classical, and folk music. Their diverse sound can be attributed to the eclectic array of musical origins: a young classical pianist appearing on NPR; a world traveler studying music in Brazil, Turkey, and Ireland; a touring boy alto and cruise songwriter; a Boston street musician; and a drummer drawing on a mix of rock, celtic, and jazz. Their upcoming debut LP, Pilot Machines (available July 17), is a melodic work that displays the band’s innovative, ambitious style and diverse talents.

Philadelphia Folk Festival Lineup Announced

Posted on:

The Philadelphia Folk Festival committee announced at Johnny Brenda’s yesterday this year’s lineup for its 51st annual event that will be taking place on August 17 – 19 at the Old Pool Farm in Upper Salford Township, near Schwenksville, PA. Locals that you should set aside time during the weekend to catch are Strand of Oaks a.k.a. Tim Showalter (it should be interesting to see if he’ll be picking up the guitar again or giving the diehard folkies a taste of the synths that he’s mentioned being obsessed about lately), Chris Kasper and Griz. We were treated to sets by the latter two at yesterday’s announcement. National touring artists like Wanda Jackson, Steve Earle and the Dukes, Little Feat, The Wooden Sky, City & Colours, Arborea, Chris Bathgate and many more will anchor down the weekend. Individual daily tickets start at $52.00, including the 20% Early Bird Discount, or you can attend all three days for $116.00. Add in tent camping and you get an additional concert on Thursday night for a total of $156.00. You can purchase your tickets as well as view the rest of the festival’s lineup and info HERE

Dreambook & Psychic Teens Opening for True Widow at KFN May 16

Posted on:

True Widow from Texas returns to Kung Fu Necktie tonight with locals Psychic Teens and Dreambook. Dreambook is a new arrival to the Philly indie music scene. This will be their first show, and it’s a good one to be on. Dreambook has an airy quality to their music with ominous undertones that may seem a bit more nightmarish than dreamy as fuzzy guitar sounds sprinkled with bits of angst stand forefront in their demo tracks. “Stay Inside” could easily fit in the soundtrack of a ‘90s TV Show (for fans of the Adventures of Pete and Pete think Polaris). And there is no doubt Deli faves Psychic Teens will bring the horror to your REM cycle. If you didn’t hear any of Tuesday’s thunderstorms, Psychic Teens will make up for that with thunderous deep bass lines and distorted, wailing guitar riffs. Both should prove to be fitting predecessors to this evening’s headliner. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Maura Filoromo

Evi Antonio plays 2 Brooklyn shows in June

Posted on:

Evi Antonio claims he’s having a tough time finding a good woman… but I’m not buying it. His music is so carefree and fun, I can’t imagine he’s having this much trouble attracting the right girl. In his latest EP ‘China, Man,’ Antonio whines and wails his way through two bouncy escapades all about the dangers of finding yourself with either no woman, or worse… the wrong woman.

But if any of this makes you think Evi’s a downer, don’t be alarmed. He is truly a master at the absurd, and builds his songs in a playground too full of pranks and tricks to ever allow any underlying issues of unrequited love to get him down. ‘Blank’ for instance, punctuates Evi’s helium-filled lungs with toy piano lines and rollicking drums, while ‘blank’ situates his sound within an amusement park filled with plenty of blank and blank. See the man live at Big Snow Buffalo Lodge on June 8 or at Glasslands on June 18. – Mike Levine

Found through our music submissions: Christine Hoberg

Posted on:

You do not want to be on the bad side of Christine Hoberg. Her romantic reflections often turn to rage and revenge, and her lyrics rarely miss their mark. While ‘J’Aime’ off its eponymous record brings out an honest yearning to find love, Hoberg more often than not revels in love’s less saintly modes, like the wrenching ‘White Ass’ and ‘Nutcase.’

For her latest record, Hoberg challenges herself not in changing what worked so well over the past couple years, but in finding a space where her feelings can elevate amidst layers of haunting echoes that shimmer from her piano stretches and knife-cutting vocal delivery. ‘Moonlight Never Shined So Bright’ is both haunting and cutting at once, revealing depths to Hoberg that challenge any simple explanation for her wicked streak. Christine’s can be a voice full of pain, but this weight gains a breathtaking outlet when expressed through the elevated tension of her music.- Mike Levine

This record was submitted digitally to The Deli here.
