Check It: Record Store Day in Philadelphia Apr. 21

Posted on:

I don’t have to tell you that you should go to every record store you can today to check out local and visiting bands in support of Record Store Day. I also don’t have to tell you that a day like this is important, especially since the number of record stores have been diminishing since the advent of mp3 and digital services. It’s a day that honors those joints that helped us increase our vinyl/CD/tape collections, exposed us to obscure artists, and acted as a home-away-from-home for many of us latchkey kids. It’s a day of remembering that buying and enjoying music is so much more than downloading the latest single from the latest buzz act–it’s about a community, a movement, a connection. So go get yourself connected.

Record Store Day Performances:

AKA Music: The Spinto Band (3pm)

Main Street Music: Shark Tape, Cheers Elephant, Megan Reilly, John Wesley Harding, Anthony D’Amato, Jesse Malin and The Spinto Band (Set Times TBA – store opens at 10am)

Siren Records: Creepoid and Cheers Elephant (around 3pm)

Hideaway Music: The Lux (1pm) and Scot Sax (2pm)

The Marvelous!: The Robert (around or after 5 pm)

Borderline Records: Watery Love and Willie Lane (9pm)

The Shakes 7” Release Show at The Station Apr. 21

Posted on:

Our most recent Featured Artist(s) poll winners the Shakes has had a busy couple of months bringing their keyboard-laden shout-along punk rock ‘n’ roll assault to SXSW and this year’s Human BBQ. They also recently cut a brand new, soulfully-supercharged 7-inch, which they’ll be celebrating its release at The Station tonight. Joining them during this night of Punk in Drublic antics will be Them Jawns, whose latest EP, Who, is pure lo-fi garage-rock bliss. Rounding out the lineup will be the sadistic dervish of Mindless Attack, and the post grunge guitar pop of Speedy Ortiz. The Station, 1550 McKean St., 9:30pm, $5, 21+ – Bill McThrill

Watery Love Opens for Ceremony at the Barbary Apr. 21

Picture of Watery Love

The Barbary’s hosting an afternoon show today with local punk acts Watery Love, Salvation and Dead People Screaming opening for Ceremony. Watery Love is a Philadelphia underground super group of sorts comprised of former Clockcleaner Richie Charles, Daniel DiMaggio (Home Blitz), Meg Baird (Espers) and Max Milgram. Earlier this month, they released three singles for free download [“(I’m A) Skull,” “This World Minds,” and “All Night Long”], as well as a 7-inch single, “Die With Dignity”/“Leave Me Alone.” Their sound features the sneering vocals of Charles fronting the loud, repetitive riffing coming from the rest of the band providing anthems for anti-social misfits. Fans can check out their new music live at today’s matinee gig before making their way to Watery Love’s Record Store Day performance at Borderline Records at 9pm. It’ll be a day of love, no doubt. The Barbary, 951 Frankford Ave, 5pm, $10-12, All Ages -Dan Brightcliffe

From Our Open Blog: Fake Limbs

Posted on:

Fake Limbs play at the Hideout May 25th in celebration of their debut album, "Man Feelings." (Available on vinyl and high-quality mp3 download.) "Behold Chicago’s Fake Limbs! Do not fear them! Tho they bristle with an amplified martial asthetic and singer/grunter Stephen Sowley is the size of a black bear, these men just want to have fun and they won’t harm yer carpets, furniture or yer pets. They may, however, harm yer hearing so pack some protection. Despite the crushing drums, churning bass lines and face-melting guitar leads, Fake Limbs aren’t afraid to strap on their man feelings with song titles like ‘Balding But Angry’, ‘Paris In the 20s’ and the epic ‘Let Me Be a Woman for a second’." — Jeff Moody, Stripwax.com

You can also catch Fake Limbs tomorrow, April 21st, playing an in-store at Reckless Records as part of their mega Record Store Day Event.

Best of NYC #90: Ex Cops releases debut single under Other Music’s label on 04.21

Posted on:

Brooklyn’s Ex Cops (#90 in The Deli’s best emerging NYC bands of 2011 Poll), will be releasing their debut single "You Are a Lion, I Am a Lamb" on 04.21 under Other Music’s label. The duo plays music that some have thought to categorize as devotional tropical goth. That three word description might be unique enough, however a thorough listen to their material reveals a more complex sound. Older songs like “Broken Chinese Chairz” point towards the minimalistic new wave stylings of the early 80’s new wave: carefully layered chunky guitar chords, brass and flutey synths all support the female vocalist’s sweet single note melody lines. The mysteriously titled “S&HSXX” clacks with a percussive force reminiscent of Brian Eno ’s “In Dark Trees”. The tracks from the upcoming single (streaming below) also differ greatly from one another, but definitely showcase a more mature and uniform sound. "You Are a Lion, I Am a Lamb" revisits the dreamy, uptempo melodies of the bands from the  Madchester era and dips them in a mid-fi sonic context, while the second track "The Millionaire" (in the video) is an arresting dream pop gem which halves the bpm and doubles up in reverb. – Dave Cromwell

Weekend Warrior, April 20 – 22

Posted on:

Yes, it’s 4/20, and while you don’t really need a holiday to get us to puff any herbage, it’s nice to know people all around the world are getting blazed too. There is a ton of stuff going on this weekend, but you really should join us this evening at PhilaMOCA when The Deli Presents “Music Madness” with the sweet countrified, bluesy sounds of Levee Drivers, San Francisco’s Dirty Ghosts (Lost Gang Records featuring members from Blackalicious, John Vanderslice, Parchman Farm, etc.), local psych rockers The Peace Creeps, and multi-instrumentalist Barrett Lindgren’s Ghost Light. It’ll be a fine way to spend your hazy holiday. As always, smoke ‘em if ya got ‘em, or just ask one of us for a hit. And of course, visit your favorite local independent record stores tomorrow! Cheers! PhilaMOCA, 531 N. 12th St. 8:30pm, $7 – $10, All Ages – Alexis V.

Interview w/ Young Hines

Posted on:

Yes, Young is his real name, and he just released his debut, Give Me My Change, on April 10 via Brendan Benson’s Readymade Records. Georgia-born Young Hines was living in Chicago when his rough-made demo was accidentally discovered by Benson. It’s a lucky thing, because Benson’s interest prompted Hines’ return to Nashville and the catching, blues-pop-soul hybrid that is Give Me My Change. Here, Hines explains to The Deli how he wound up back here, what does or doesn’t work in songwriting and what he might listen to today. Read interview here.

Rockville MD’s alt. rock band The Dirty Jacks were crowned the champions at the Mid-Atlantic Band Battle 6 held at Jammin Java this year. And they also just so happened to get the title of Band of the Month via our last poll. So collectivelly, we got a hold of Colin Ball (Lead Vocals/Guitar,) Billy Rommel (Lead Guitar,) Bobby Scott (Bass/Vocals,) Erik Hildebrant (Drums,) and Ian Hildebrant (Keyboard/Vocals.) They filled us in on everything from poker, weekend tours throughout the summer, and kevlar drumsticks. Now onto the interview…

Their debut album Rufus is available now, and you can catch them live next at Sonoma’s in Columbia, MD on 4/28.

(You can check out its full schedule and purchase tickets online.) It’s brought to you by the guys behind Evil Weevil Records, and will be taking place at Danger Danger Gallery (Friday), 23rd Street Armory (Saturday), and The Fire (Sunday).
