New Beard announces full length + plays Bowery Electric on May 5

Posted on:

New Beard released a substantial debut EP ("Moment of Peace") late in 2011, and in June is set to release an album full of the kind of dreamlike touches and dramatic flourishes at home with the Brooklyn-based artist leading this project, Ben Wigler. Not content with repeating itself, the band has stripped bare many of the dense sounds heard on the EP and has gone for a clean and lush atmospheric. The quartet showcases an enormous bag of tricks, and the orchestration has expanded to flutes, strings, tuba and the many manner of ways that express the kind of dreamy sadness Ben Wigler has made his own. To promote the upcoming release, New Beard is premiering this free Mp3 of the song "Doom"(Featuring Gustav Ejstes of Dungen), which you can download below. Don’t miss their show at Bowery Electric on May 5. – Mike Levine

Cindy Lou Gooden (ex Very Fresh) releases new EP

Posted on:

Cindy Lou Gooden (formerly Very Fresh) is back with a new EP! ‘Kitsch Tapes‘ is a stripped-down, acoustic detour of sorts (CLG sometimes plays and often records with a louder, more abrasive band), commemorative of a prolific summer of songwriting in which several months were spent traveling around the country and crashing with friends in NYC, LA, and various parts of New England. It draws on some perennial influences: Stephen Malkmus and early Dirty Projectors. Everybody says it sounds like Liz Phair even though she says doesn’t really listen to her. Cindy Lou will be playing solo at Big Snow Buffalo Lodge on May 15th for Permanent Wave NYC’s Hollaback! Benefit. – (as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here). The Deli’s NYC Open Blog is powered by The Music Building.

Brother K rocks Sidewalk Cafe (in a bluesy way) on 04.28

Posted on:

The post-blues movement has generated some serious bands in the past ten years. Joining the ranks of The White Stripes and The Black Keys is New York, NY’s Brother K. Fans of jangling guitars, lo-fi vocals and drums, and spit-kicking aggression need look no further. Their second ep “Claws and Stripes Forever” shows a nice range of tone and delivery from vocalist and songwriter Lucas Kwong. It’s a startling departure from their initial “Payroll” release which was a blackrok-esque mix of rap and blues-rock. Brother K may still be discovering their identity, but it seems the art is being born in the discovery. – Broke MC

“Sold Out” Free Pissed Jeans Show at MilkBoy Philly April 26

Posted on:

Hate the mundane but can’t seem to escape it? Ever wanted to scream at Whole Foods simply for being there all the time? Tonight Allentown noise geeks and Sub Pop vets Pissed Jeans are bringing their brand of disaffected hardcore to MilkBoy Philly, and you can go and scream along with them for free courtesy of Dr. Martens (that’s if you already grabbed your tix because the show is “sold out”). Pissed Jeans capture the aggravation in day-to-day living, singing about pizza and ice cream as if they were the bane of middle class existence, and they channel this frustration into a live show where the question for you is not whether there will be a pit, but if you’ll leave it unscathed. With a squealing guitar, a pounding rhythm section, and the aggressive, charismatic antics of vocalist Matt Corvette, Pissed Jeans are unpredictable, uncompromising, and undeniably fun. What a better way to vent about reruns and cheap microwavable food? MilkBoy Philly, 1100 Chestnut St., 9pm, Free, 21+ – Adam Downer

Kat Edmonson’s Second Album Hits #1

Posted on:

Singer/songwriter and former Elephant Room regular, Kat Edmonson, seems to be doing quite well for herself as of late. After performing with a handful of music industry fixtures (Willie Nelson and Lyle Lovett to name a couple,) her Sophomore album Way Down Low, released April 10th, has held the #1 spot for record sales at Waterloo Records for the first two weeks after its release, as per Waterloo’s website. And we all know that topping any music chart in Austin is, of course, no accident. Edmonson, who lists Nina Simone as one of her biggest musical influences, combines elements of saccharine pop with sophisticated jazz to create music that might easily be mistaken for a recording produced in the 1950s Peggy Lee / Doris Day era–an attribute that Edmonson seems quite aware of in a song on her new album called “I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times.” Edmonson’s own brilliance, however, can be found in her astute, carefully concerted vocal nuances. Her sparsity in composition and arrangement brings to mind, at times, famous minimalists like Bill Callahan, and at others there is a strong resemblance to bossa nova queen Astrud Gilberto–heard especially clear on tunes like “This Was The One.” If you missed her recent shows in Austin, there is a new music video on NPR’s All Songs Considered blog to hold you over until the next one.

The Cloud Room is back with “Zither”

Posted on:

The Deli was a 1 year old baby when The Cloud Room came out with the super catchy single "Hey Now Now" – but we did take notice at the time, and featured the band in one of our first issues. After a break up, which truned out to be a 7 year hiatus, the band is back with a new album entitled "Zither," which reintroduces us to its catchy, "Let’s Dance" era Bowiesque pop. Check out the first single "Crashing in Love", streaming below.

Delicious Audio Interview with Lucius about recording

Posted on:

It’s rare to see a band mature as fast as Lucius did. Started as a mellow and rather ordinary duo of female singer songwriters, this project in the last 2 years or so has expanded and grown in unexpected, abnormal yet wonderful ways. Their impressive performance at our Deli NYC B.E.A.F. 2011 event showcased a band that, with a little imagination in the arrangement and performance departments, can take traditional songwriting to an entirely new level. Music fans (and industry) seem to be noticing, since they have started to sell out shows in NYC and Austin during SXSW. These two ladies can write good songs and sing beautifully, and with the help of the two boys in the band, put on a show at once emotional and powerful. One of the guys, drummer Dan Molad, is also in charge of recording the band, which mostly happens in the Brooklyn apartment he shares with singer Jess Wolfe. We asked him a few question related to that department. – Read the full Delicious Audio interview here.
