Lily and the Parlour Tricks Premiere New Video for ‘The Poison Song’ + play Cameo on 04.10

Posted on:

New York’s answer to doo-wop, Lily and the Parlour Tricks raise their seductive shuffle to a higher bar with their new video for ‘The Poison Song.’ Lily Claire shimmies around in a changing cast of black-on-white-on-black backdrops that cast the barroom brawl of the single in its most sensuous light. Taken from their latest self-titled EP, ‘The Poison Song’ will get you on your feet and keep you there until Lily says otherwise.

Shana Keegan produces.

Catch the band when they play Cameo Gallery 11 pm this Tuesday, April 10th.

The Lounge Act – Clean Guitars / Epic Proportions

Posted on:

Dueling, clean guitars, raucous drums, and sentimental vocals, The Lounge Act makes a lot happen from seemingly almost nothing. With songs that take plenty of twists and turns before arriving, tracks like ‘Julie’ and ‘For What It’s Worth’ reveal an often ignored potential for straightforward rock ensembles. Lounge Act seems to make the effects we usually hear from stompboxes come out instead directly from singer Simon Guzman’s epic tales of heartbreak and disappointment. With all the possibilities granted to recording these days, it’s refreshing to hear such an honest means used to tell a story. Lounge act has found this formula, by reinventing rock music’s familiar terrain for their own purposes. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

See them April 28 at Bar East.

Restorations Leaving Their Imprint at The Barbary April 8

Posted on:

Maybe it’s because I am child of the ’90s that I heart Restorations so much. Unlike most of the crap put in the mainstream, this is one local outfit that wraps itself so tightly around the passionate, bleeding heart melodies of the yesteryear’s indie rock – the overwhelming seduction of shoegaze interrogations, the breathless melancholy of campus rock beer stains, the ballsy behavior of reckless post-punk, and the story-telling missives of modern Americana. It’s sonic nostalgia that never seems out-dated. In every daring chord, in every dusky intone, in every pleading rhythm, there is Restorations’ imprint. And tonight at The Barbary, it will pair perfectly with Kite Party’s beating heart alt-rock and End of a Year Self Defense Family’s rusty New York post-hardcore shrills. Yup, that’s the stuff. The Barbary, 951 Frankford Ave., 7:30pm, $10, All Ages – Annamarya Scaccia

The Freaky Power of NJ’s Rob Jennings

Posted on:

Rob Jennings might have some spooky images on his bandcamp, but his sound goes down like butter. This is dance music that pairs freaky psychedelia with swirling, dense organs and obscure samples, all brought home by Jennings, whose tenor rivals even singers like Omar Rodriguez-Lopez on screamer tracks ‘Invisible Walls’ and ‘Shy Nobody.’

The Jersey band takes psychology to places it’s never been before on debut full-length ‘Shy Nobody.’ An album replete with dance-a-licious power grooves fueled by cerebral madness… a fantastically demented achievement if you ask me.

See them when they play live at Bardi’s Bar & Grill in Pequannock, NJ on June 1st.

Fast Years – Too Fast to Live, Too Awesome to Ignore

Posted on:

Let the good times roll. Like a name that could have come straight from a James Dean quote, Fast Years plays fast, fun music that gets right to the point and stays at that mileage until the end.

Playing through their riffs like a rock mission statement, the Brooklyn quartet shred away on their latest EP ‘Young Heart,’ making it their mission to re-ignite Ramone’s-style party anthems, using their EP as the spark.

See them when they play Union Hall on April 27th.

Interview with Pet Parade: DC Deli’s Band of the Month (April)

Posted on:

Arlington VA’s indie rockers Pet Parade are a name we here at the Deli have seen listed on nearly every venue around the DMV lately, so it’s no wonder they were voted as our Band of the Month. We wanted to find out more about the guys that make up Pet Parade (Patrick Jones, Marco Morales, Mark AC, and Blaine Misner) so we got a hold of Patrick who filled us in on their upcoming recording, synth pop roots, and the love for local supporting venues. Now onto the interview…

Catch them live at a free show on Sunday 4/8 at CD Cellar in Arlington @ 6 PM. They will be shooting a video for one of their tracks off Unleash the Furry so be there!

The Lawsuits EP Release Party at MilkBoy Philly April 7

Posted on:

The Lawsuits have been tantalizing us with their countrified folk rock with just a tinge of blues for a while now. So when I first learned that they were heading into Sigma Sound Studios to work on a new EP, I was ready for more of their music filled with good vibes. The end result is Hot Love, and songs like Baby, Don’t Go (which the band filmed their first official music video for, and you can view it below). Tonight they’ll be celebrating the release of their album at Milkboy Philly, and they’ll be joined by the Brothers Murphy of Penrose who just finished their first recording session with Bill Moriarty. The evening will also feature the pulse pounding rockabilly of Levee Drivers, and the psych rock swagger of Mountjoy. Milkboy Philly, 1100 Chestnut St., 8pm, $10, 21+ – Bill McThrill

The 34th Annual Human BBQ at PiLam April 7

Posted on:

There really are so many options for things to do this weekend, and PiLam’s 34th Annual Human BBQ seems to be flying under the radar more than usual this year with the inaugural run of Liberty Fest. The badasssss Screaming Females will be headlining this wevening as they tour in support of their fifth album Ugly, and NY’s Young Magic will be impressing the hoards of drunken Penn kids with songs from their buzz worthy album Melt. But the mega fest features a lineup of 13 more bands playing for just $15, and if past Human Barbecues are any indication, then they might just have a few surprises planned (the secret Dead Milkmen set from a few years back most likely still fills all who were there with some good memories). While Sunny Ali & The Kid test music and racial barriers with their electrifying Pakistani cowboy rock, Norwegian Arms will impress with their lo-fi mandolin-driven ditties as they preview tracks from their upcoming LP. Dry Feet will rock you into a frenzy with their fast-paced surf punk, and Catnaps will sooth you with their melodic, heartwarmingly catchy tunes. The Tough Shits play their first home show since coming back from tour, and will have you sloshing around to their garage rock anthems in no time. Especially since The Shakes will be on hand to deliver an energetic set of under-two-minute assaults. This years barbecue will also feature the German hip hop of MC Digga (a.k.a. Ben Morgan), the three pronged bass assault of Acid Kicks, the alt rock anthems of Welter, and so much more. Check out the set times HERE. PiLam, 3914 Spruce Street, 12pm, $15, All Ages – Bill McThrill

Happy Friday: A Weekend’s Worth of Shows

Posted on:

Friday is upon us, and while many music lovers in Seattle will be packing venues to take in a handful of acts stopping by the city this weekend (Cults, Young the Giant and Sleigh Bells, to name a few), there’s plenty of local talent lined up over the next few days for those of you without big-name tickets. Tomorrow night, the Vera Project will play host to San Franciscan rockers, Ceremony, Olympia’s Milk Music, and the Seattle-based Society Nurse. The trio should provide a high-octane set tailored to the tastes of the city’s hardcore audience, for $11 a ticket ($10 with a club card). Doors will be at 7:30. At the Sunset Tavern, blues-rockers the Grizzled Mighty will take the stage with Strong Killings and Consignment on Saturday night. Presented by KEXP Audioasis, tickets for the show are $8, and doors will open at 10:00. Rounding out the weekend on Sunday night, the Comet Tavern presents folk bard Eric Miller, along with Shareef Ali and the Radical Folksonomy, Judd Wasserman, and Kate Graves. Cover for the show sits at $6.

There’s more to The Record Summer than Meets the Eye

Posted on:

I guess you really can’t judge a book by its cover. The soft, dreamy vocals in The Record Summer’s jams belie a quiet rage, betraying an inner passion that feels almost at odds with their jams, but only adds to the mysterious intrigue powering this group.

Their debut ‘Race to the Bottom’ moves through singer/songwriter Bret Rodysill purging the wounds of a broken heart in the slow build of ‘Boys and Girls in the Modern Age’ and the ultra-catchy ‘You in an Empty Room.’ For a man with a lot on his mind, this is some fairly cathartic stuff.
