The Deli Philly’s Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner: W.C. Lindsay

Posted on:

Sometimes technology fails us. That was the case when we didn’t receive W.C. Lindsay’s email with interview answers for when they won our Featured Artist(s) Poll a while back. Well, since they’ll be celebrating the release of their new EP Hard Youth, Hardly You tomorrow night at The Treehouse with Cold Fronts, Lucy Stone, and Tongue Sculptors, we thought that it would be a good time as any to post it. Check out our interview with William Charles Lindsay about his band W.C. Lindsay HERE.

Chief Keef “Back From The Dead”

Posted on:

It is hard to ignore the rise of Chief Keef, and with the release of his new mixtape "Back From The Dead" just 10 days ago the buzz is about to reach an all new level. Keef has a tremendous story to tell at such a young age. Anytime a high school aged musician can gain national attention it is remarkable, but the details of Keef’s rise is even more incredible. It was last August when Keef released his first video and single for a track called "Bang", and it went mostly unnoticed. It took an arrest following a shoot-out with police for the 16 year old emcee to gain notoriety. Since then his video has been viewed over a million times.

For better or worse Chief Keef is on the rise and with the new mixtape it seems like nothing is going to slow him down. For more information on Chief Keef I would recommend reading this great article on Gawker by local writer David Drake.

Jonas Friddle & The Majority

Posted on:

Jonas Friddle & The Majority is a new band with an old sound. It seems that every so often a group likes to reach back to a simpler era and grab a few stylistic elements. The plays a classic form of bluegrass with hint of blues and folk.

The band is celebrating the release of two new albums, Belle De Louisville and Synco Pony with a performance at The Hideout on March 24th with Tangleweed and Ami Moss & The Unfortunate.

NYC Artists on the rise: Late Guest at The Party live at Pianos on 03.23

Posted on:

Let’s not forget why we go to shows in the first place…. we are hoping to witness an event! Late Guest at the Party are exactly that. Their music is catchy, unadorned… it’s britpop sent back to us from wherever it’s been hiding for all this time – and it’s been gone way too long. Listen to the floor-shaking bounce of ‘Icebergs’ (streaming below) or to the clave-happy rhythms of ‘Electric Bongos’ (bizarre video here). The band has distilled the pop formula to a confectionary sweetness: this is music that does exactly what it’s supposed to, it delivers the show. Don’t be late at their Pianos’ party on march 23. – Mike Levine @goldnuggets

The Dirty Grand release “Facedown” EP at Cameo on 03.27

Posted on:

The Dirty Grand might have the moves of late night gyrating and PBR binges baked into their dance-ready rock anthems, but a more attentive listen reveals the group’s disposition as closer in style to reflective, after-hours groups like Destroyer and The Weeknd. Beyond the novelty of carving out a place equal parts electronica and post-punk, Dirty Grand also displays a deep cynicism, providing an unsettling backdrop to their urban meditations. Listening to barnburner ‘Roman’ for instance, I’m not sure if the party’s ended or just spun a bit out of control. But this kind of anxiety suits these NY vets well. The trio includes Lou Reed’s touring guitarist and the former members of BM Linx working through some hard learned lessons, while staying out too late for their own good. And what could be more New York than that? See the band at their sophomore EP’s Release Party at Cameo on Tuesday, March 27 with Warsonic. – Mike Levine

Honey Watts Creating Contemplative Drinking Music at MilkBoy Philly March 22

Posted on:

Honey Watts is the relatively new project from Liz Fullerton. You may recognize her earnest, airy lilt as one half of Philly trip-hop duo Dutch (the other half being producer Stoupe the Enemy of Mankind from Jedi Mind Tricks). In the songs from her latest venture, Fullerton conjures up the feelings of lonely winter nights on the prairie and the sorrows of finite relationships creating contemplative drinking music. Lucky for you MilkBoy Philly has a fully stocked bar. Honey Watts will be joined this evening by locals Allison Polans (Papertrees), who also possesses vocal prowess that can make you feel an oh-so-certain way, and Lauryn Peacock. MilkBoy Philly, 1100 Chestnut St., 9pm, $10, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman

Q&A with the deli’s Artist of the Month in February: Eric Ott

Posted on:

The Deli: How did the band start?

Eric Ott: I was in a few bands before going solo. My last band album was with Mercuryhat. We made a couple albums that did ok and got some nice reviews. We had so many people coming and going within the band I decided it was kind of a joke to keep the name Mercuryhat. So going solo…
