La Sera premieres double video + releases “Sees The Light”

Posted on:

La Sera is the solo project of Vivian Girls’ Katy Goodman. The material in her sophomore record "Sees The Light" almost completely abandons the previous lo-fi psychedelic aesthetics, but still finds inspiration in the pop sound of the 50s and 60s, which permeated the artist’s output both in her band and previous solo effort. The record seems to thrive on slower tempo tracks like the opener "Love That’s Gone", and when the distorted guitars appear – like in "Please Be My Third Eye" and the Smitheque "Break My Heart" (streaming below) – they feature a sound that’s more Ween than The Jesus & Mary Chain. La Sera just premiered this double video for "Real Boy" and "Drive on," definitely two of the best tracks on the record. California based fans will be able to see Katy live at Mammoth Lakes, with Neon Indian.

Chris LeSage “The Prelude”

Posted on:

Sometimes an album just sneaks up on you and blows your mind. I confess that I had not heard of Chris LeSage, but I vaguely remember his past project Silhouette Radio. Last week I received an email about his new ep The Prelude which he dropped via soundcloud and bandcamp on Feb. 29th. I pressed play and was transported to a world of pulsing, soulful, atmospheric R&B.

This album is so compelling and beautiful, and truly deserves your attention. Check out the first track from the ep below.

From The NYC Open Blog: New Myths

Posted on:

NYC based three piece New Myths weave electronic dance elements with fuzzy psychedelic guitars, cinematic drumbeats, melodic strings, and haunting melody lines. This all female electro-dream-pop outfit is the project of drummer Rosie Glassman, bassist Marina Ross, and singer/guitarist Britney Boras (of Brit and the Cavalry fame). They went to grade school and jazz school together, and then found each other again, years later, in the NYC music scene. New Myths have released their debut self-titled EP on March 11. – (as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here). Backwords releases “By The Neck” tonight (03.26) at Glasslands

Posted on:

Backwords is like the beginning of spring, a cool breeze blowing as blossoms that had been lying dormant finally begin to poke their heads above ground. Smooth and airy, with a small amount of grit, this band manages to be both catchy and buzzy without being overwhelmingly poppy or shoegazy (a difficult line to walk). Think The Microphones with a splash of Best Coast. And, like the beginning of spring, backwords is back. Fresh off sxsw, the band delivers their new CD "By the Neck" at an album release party at Glasslands on Monday, March 26th. If you miss that, there are both Manhattan and Brooklyn shows in the future, so it looks like they’ll be sticking around for a while. Hopefully the same can be said for spring. – allison levin

New Track: “Heavy Metal Heart” – Juston Stens & The Get Real Gang

Posted on:

While the prog rock track “Heavy Metal Heart” is very different from the others you’ll find on Juston Stens & The Get Real Gang’s new album Trash or Treasure, that is probably why it stands out as a “treasure” to us. You can check out and purchase the rest of their LP HERE.

The Split plays Arlene’s on April 28

Posted on:

Coming up on April 28, New York/Brooklyn’s The Split will hit Arlene’s Grocery with their pop meets beat meets garage rock sound. Exactly five months ago, the quartet released their self-titled album, which features laid back vocals, peppy drumbeats, and upbeat melodies. Album highlights are feel-good fun track, “Here Before We’re Gone,” punky “Tell Me What You Want,” and closer, bassy 60’s- esque jam, “Nobody But You.” Find The Split’s album on Bandcamp and finish off April with them at Arlene’s! – Meijin Bruttomesso

Ground Up Headline at TLA March 24

Posted on:

It’s pretty crazy to see Ground Up featured on the marquee of the TLA. It just feels like yesterday that we discovered the hip hop collaborative in our Open Blog inbox. However, that was many free mixtapes ago. And the local crew has a new one entitled The Get Up to get people on their feet and movin’ (you can cop it HERE). It features contributions from Freeway, Young Chris, Reef the Lost Cauze, and many others. Hopefully Ground Up will have some guest appearances lined up for their set. We already know that Reef will be in the house heating up the crowd as an opener so expect him to join in on “Flippy Phones” from their latest. Also joining them on the bill is up-and-comer Young Savage. Come out and watch Philly hip hop burn down the big stage on South Street! TLA, 334 South St., $10 + fees, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman

Sweet Lights Opening for Polica at KFN March 24

Posted on:

Shai Halperin has already accomplished a lot as a musician and the former leader of The Capitol Years. Halperin and his band recorded a live session for BBC Radio, played the Glastonbury Festival, received high levels of praise from Rolling Stone and Pitchfork, and toured with the likes of the Pixies and Daniel Johnston (whom they also backed on tours). And The Capitol Years that featured members of Nightlands and The War on Drugs at certain points started out as Halperin playing every instrument on the first two albums. The artist went back to those roots for his latest project Sweet Lights, and it’s been all him for the “Endless Town” single and the self-titled debut that’s scheduled for release in April. He’ll also be going solo tonight for the SOLD OUT Polica show at Kung Fu Necktie. Some more tickets may be made available at the door though, so it’s recommended that you look into it pronto!
