Mirror Talk spread the dance on Choose Life

Posted on:

If there was anything music in the eighties taught us, it’s that there’s always time break into dance and leave logic out the door. Or maybe that’s how the plot to the Breakin’ films unravel. Either way, it’s hard to avoid the enduring influence of synth- pop in today’s younger bands. And while the mission of most is to distort its spotless, primitive arrangements with noisy bursts of riotous vigor, there’s also those who shun the idea of experimenting for experimenting’s sake and opt to bust out the Casio and put it on auto-pilot. The self-proclaimed millenials Mirror Talk fall into the latter – the songs off their self-titled EP resonate with a playful spirit, filled to the brim with contagious excitement. Seemingly meant to be taken in the same context as a “choose life” t-shirt, they share a song titled with the eponymous eighties slogan. And the sentiment couldn’t be any more apropos with the song’s vitality – going for an arena-level synth pop sentiment, in which they exclaim is it true love with upbeat jubilation, the hyper-balled unabashedly melds a finely-tuned production that feels very now with a glorious sense of the past.

NYC/LA Collaboration: Alice and Michi, debut release out in May

Posted on:

Sometimes bands bios aren’t boring, so why not use them for a blog entry? All we need to say is that these two girls (Alice and Michi) are talented musicians and you should check out their songs…
"It was early 2011, a jazzy feel-time season. Michi wrote Alice a letter urging her to come to New York and collaborate on a musical project. Alice was driving around Los Angeles, deep in her annual autumnal malaise. She skimmed the message at a stoplight just before stopping at her favorite Subway and read the remainder just before going to bed. Three months later Alice arrived in NYC with two suitcases, a snare and cymbals but it was unclear who would be playing what instrument. […] Nobody knew but Michi welcomed Alice into her home and the musical experiments began."
Alice and Michi’s debut record will be released on May 15 on Kenji Records

Rayon Beach releases full length in the Spring + plays SXSW on 03.13

Posted on:

Distorted sporadic guitars and a plethora of obscure synths define Rayon Beach’s distinct sound. Pioneered by Thomas Sutherland and Mike Naccarato, Rayon Beach emulates a smart, energized garage rock sound with undertones of psychedelic punk. The band has occupied the Austin music scene for some time since their debut in 2009 with their release of the lo-fi production album, Styrofoam Drone, in 2011. The trio plans to release a full-length album in April 2012 and is set to play at SXSW at Headhunters on March 13. If you catch their set, be prepared to thrash your body to the beat of the nostalgic sounds of clamoring punk in the late 70’s. – Alejandra Ramirez

Philly surf punks Dry Feet have a new 7” entitled Highway to Heck coming out on April 20 via Secret Cookies Records. We’ve already shared with you the video for the badass track “Hard Workin’ Woman” near the end of last year. Check out the instrumental rocker “Big Brown Shark” (which we think would make Dick Dale very proud) below as well as the rest of the album HERE.

Release news from Miniature Tigers, A Place to Bury Strangers, Woods and Bear in Heaven

Posted on:

After a rather quiet period, lots of breakout NYC bands are sending us news about upcoming releases. Rad avant-pop band Miniature Tigers are releasing their new full length "Mia Pharaoh" today, it can be streamed here – definitely looking forward to that one. Electro-Dream-Pop outfit Bear in Heaven (pictured), after playing a secret show in New York last week, released another track (entitled "Sinful Nature, streaming below) from their brand new LP "I Love You, It’s Cool" out April 3rd on Dead Oceans/Hometapes. Glo-fi pioneers Woods just released a split album with California based band Amps for Christ, and are streaming one song from it on Pitchfork here. They also announced an April tour. Finally, noise masters A Place to Bury Strangers is releasing a split 7" with SF Ceremony under Famous Class Records, for a series of singles called "Less Artists More Condos", dedicated to DIY NYC promoter Ariel Panero, who died in December of 2010. The proceeds of these releases will entirely go to the Ariel Panero Memorial Fund

Secret Music releases full length, plays SXSW

Posted on:

I don’t know what’s going on lately, but it seems like electronic bands are taking over NYC… Secret Music is an electro-rock duo whose sound is almost paradoxically split in two: the keyboards on one side (or rather, in front), and everything else underneath it. If we somehow muted the huge layer of synths and arpeggiators floating on top of their tunes, these guys would sound like an indie rock band with lo-fi inclinations (filtered vocals, casually delivered melodies). The keyboards introduce an 80s dance element that seems almost out of context, but actually contributes to a rather unique sound. The band is releasing today their full length debut produced by Ayad Al Adhamy of Passion Pit, and will take the road for a mini-tour which will include a couple of Austin dates during the SXSW Festival.

New band from NYC: Relations announce EP + premiere video

Posted on:

Relations is a very new band from NYC with a sound reminiscent of the early, dark and tense post punk days, when bands like Joy Division and Wire ruled the rock world. They just signed to label 100m Records, which announced the release of the band’s debut EP for the spring. Check out the video of the single "Asavage Way to Love" (or stream it here).
