Sleepy Sun Premiere New Single, Hit the Road for SXSW + Tour

Posted on:

SF’s soulful, 70s-esque rockers Sleepy Sun are set to have a big spring. The Northern California-born band, who crafts sprawling tracks reminiscent of Led Zepplin with an Americana edge, will release a new LP, Spine Hits, on April 10th as well as embark on a national spring tour and SXSW dates, listed below.

Following their past releases, Embrace and Fever, Spine Hits takes the eerie, yet familiar Sleepy Sun sound and makes it even catchier. First single “Stivey Pond” is lurking and creepy, like a road trip in the middle of a deserted desert; you don’t know what’s around the next corner and you’re bracing yourself.

Don’t miss the band of brothers as they kick off five shows at SXSW on March 14th or head to a city near you.

On the Water and More Eclectic Sounds at Emoda Gallery March 11

Posted on:

It’s exciting to see spring peeking its head out. Now, I know some of you probably missed the snow, cold and change of seasons this year, but I can’t lie. I am appreciating global warming working in my favor this winter. To celebrate not being freakishly trapped by snow on a Sunday night, you should head out to an eclectic mix of music this evening at Emoda Gallery. Weirdo folksters and Deli faves On the Water will be bringing their contemplative gems for all to swoon over tonight. It’s always a treat for me to see them perform. Vintage Kicks’ Alex Malamy will be showing off his diverse musical taste with his folk-pop side project Tamarin. Oddball rockers The Shakes plan to liven up the crowd with their punk rock spirit and impassioned guy/gal vocals, while lo-fi crooner Charmaine’s Names will be transporting the audience to a sleazy lounge that time forgot. They’ll all be playing host to Brooklyn’s Hearsay & Hyperbole – don’t sleep on Alexis Powell’s enchanting vocals. If a bill with diversity is your thang, then you’ve found a place to hang this evening. Emoda Gallery, 302 Moore St., 8pm, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman

The Shakedown 10 Year Anniversary Party at The Troc March 10

Posted on:

For a whole decade DJs Rob Paine and Willyum have teamed up to bring The Shakedown to memorable night club spots like Five Spot, the old Silk City, Bubble House, and its current home at the Barbary. Tonight the duo that has been involved with such techno/house institutions as 611 Records, Solomonic Sound System, and Worship Recordings will be taking there 10 Year Anniversary Party to the Trocadero, and they’ll be joined by 2 of Philadelphia’s most legendary DJs. From being a DJ/producer/remixer/artist to owning Ovum Recordings, Josh Wink is a world renowned jack of all trades. And from his days of touring with Digable Planets and collaborating with Ursula Rucker on Ovum, to earning a Pew Fellowship in the Arts Award and releasing his album The Intricate Beauty, all the while finding the time to remix everyone from Tori Amos to Miles Davis, King Britt has certainly been a fine representative of the Philly music community. And he’ll be a welcomed edition to the anniversary bash that will be headlined by NYC’s Francois K. The Trocadero, 1003 Arch St., 9pm, $21 – $25, All Ages – Bill McThrill

4th Annual PBR Crafting Challenge & Chili Cook-off at 2424 Studios March 10

Posted on:

The people behind the Philadelphia Independent Craft Market are ready to pull out all the stops during its 4th Annual Pabst Blue Ribbon Crafting Challenge. And while crafters from all across the region will be judged for their handmade and vintage PBR goods, you’ll be able to enjoy plenty of PBR sponsored refreshments. But for the first time ever the event will pay host to bars & restaurants like El Camino Real, the Trestle Inn, and PYT as they compete in a chili cook off. The craft event wouldn’t be complete without a full day of music, and this one delivers with a fun lineup of locals. Before they pack up for their SXSW tour, TJ Kong and the Atomic Bomb will deliver their brand of booze-filled blues rock. Levee Drivers will be performing the first of their double header before they head to Doylestown for a show at Maxwell’s on Main. While they won’t be playing with their full band, it will still be the last chance to enjoy the country twang of Arrah and The Ferns until they return from tour in late May. Add in the eclectic jazzed-up songwriting of the Circadian Rhythms and the funk rock hybrid of Joe Duffey’s Underwater Window Garden, and you’ll have plenty of entertainment while checking out all the knick-knacks and tasting some stick-to-your-ribs chili with a chaser of cold PBR. Ha…who needs SXSW? 2424 Studios, 2424 E. York St., 3pm – 10pm, $8, All Ages – Bill McThrill

Night Beats Continue North American Tour at SXSW

Posted on:

Seattle-based outfit, Night Beats, will kick of the last leg of a North American tour – bookended by appearances in Austin – on March 14. The band’s first performance at this year’s SXSW will be a homecoming of sorts. Its two founding members, lead singer Danny Lee Blackwell and drummer James Traeger (from Dallas and Austin, respectively) will be returning to their home state for the event. The progressive R&B act, a trio since the addition of bassist Tarek Wegner, have been furnishing the Seattle scene with their perplexing brand of garage-soul since 2009. Their self-titled, full-length debut is characterized by undulating bass lines, underscored by scratching, squealing guitar and alternately trembling and deafening vocals. Released last June, the album features textured and psychedelically informed instrumentation, interspersed by Blackwell’s yelps and howls, and his single, twangy guitar is reminiscent of Trouble in Mind label-mate Ty Segall’s lo-fi surf rock. The result is a resurrection of the ghosts of psyche bands past that transcends the decades since the ‘60s as effectively as any other contemporary revivalists. Night Beats will wrap up a 40-date stretch at the Austin Psych Festival on April 27.

We’ll Go Machete announces new album “Six Plus Ten”

Posted on:

Post-punk with a dash of 90‘s noise-rock, anyone? With simple, playfully dark lyrics sung in a forceful monotone calling back to bands like Karp, and metallic bass lines reminiscent of The Jesus Lizard or Shellac, We’ll Go Machete mingles their influences tastefully with their own sound. Noisy guitars ride over Rachel Fuhrer’s thick, cymbal-heavy drumming to create a lingering treble tone that hangs in the air like a thin layer of grey smoke. Their upcoming LP, "Six Plus Ten," will be released April 30th by Stressed Sumo Records. – Brandt Kempin

Radiation City plays Deli show in Austin with Reptar and Body Language

Posted on:

Upon offering the world "The Hands That Take You (Tender Loving Empire)," a retro-infused pop gem, 2011 found Radiation City in a debut breakout year that couldn’t be stopped. While the full account of accolades is too long to list here, special highlights include packed showcases at CMJ in the middle of a national tour, a Daytrotter session, a video premiere on IFC and a slew of adoring press from across the country including several nods on notable "Year End" lists including the Deli Portland’s. Consumate musicians all the way through, show-goers shouldn’t be surprised to hear excellent covers of anything from Outkast’s "Ms. Jackson" to Etta James’ "At Last" at Radiation City’s numerous SXSW dates – including the Deli’s own on Thursday March 15 at The Gypsy Lounge, with Reptar, Body Language, The Stepkids and many more. Weekend Warrior, March 9 – 11

I’m gonna cut right to the chase: The reason you should go see Far-Out Fangtooth at The Station this Saturday night, aside from the smashing freak-garage delirium that is their music, is that it’s their last show in Philly before they head to SXSW (again). To even miss their sludgy, wicked phantasmic fury while it’s in your own backyard is nothing short of a sin, really. And buying their upcoming 7-inch for Hozac Records won’t even make up for it (although, you know, totally buy it ‘coz if you don’t, that’s a double sin). Plus, they’re sharing the bill with Moon Women, who, if you checked our post from yesterday, just released "We Weren’t Wrong," the fired up, heavily melodic snotty lead single from their upcoming 4-song 12-inch, and the always-rousing power trio, Psychic Teens, who smack your face with shameless, unapologetic post-apocalyptic no-wave goth (but what else do expect from one of the Best of The Deli Philly Poll top performers?) So, yea, I don’t think you need anymore convincing. The Station, 1550 McKean St., 9pm, $7, 21+ – Annamarya Scaccia
