Here’s a new psychedelic garage jam from Bandname called “King of Surfers.” It will appear on their split 7” with DC’s Shat Shorts. This will be the first of three 7” records that Bandname will be releasing this year. There will also be a split with Hot Mess from Massachusetts and a 3-song EP on Philly-based label Evil Weevil Records. Bandname’s next show in Philly will be on Feb. 23 at PiLam with Teenage Cool Kids and Algernon Cadwallader, and it will be the first time the split records will be available.

Best of Portland — Fans’ Poll Concludes and Winners Announced!
We are happy to announce that the final round of our "Best Emerging Act of 2011"–the Fans’ Poll–has finally concluded! While this portion of voting is only one part of the entire process, it is a crucial poll–one that not only wins the top act the "Artist of the Month" banner at the top of the page, but also has commonly broken close ties for "Best Emerging Act" in years past. All that being said, we would like to congratulate the following "Top Three" acts and their fans for their dedication in getting out the vote:
1. The Druthers
Feel good, country-tinged soft rock nestled comfortably between Van Morrison’s "Brown Eyed Girl" and a Taylor Swift/John Mayer duet.
2. Tope
A Portland rhymesayer and prolific beatmaker that’s as concerned with the size of his chain as he is with genrefication – not very.
3. Sons of Huns
Top 5 contenders in the Open Submission portion of this year’s "Best of" poll. This is a group that knows where rock came from and aims to never let it die.
Thanks to the bands, but most importantly though, to all the fans who participated in the voting process. Without you, the Deli and all of the bands involved would likely not exist.
Silver Swans’ “Forever” LP Drops Today
Happy Tuesday! Why so happy? Recently named San Francisco Bay Guardian 2012 band on the rise, Silver Swans release their latest LP, Forever, today.
Listen below to the first single, "Let It Happen," aptly titled with its mellow-on-the-surface, synthy touches and harp glimmers contrasted by huge booms. If you’re looking to tune into and drop out of your responsibilities at work today or in bed tonight, Forever will be your pick.

Ok Go “Needing/Getting”
So, as most of you may have been, I was watching the Super Bowl last night, and all of sudden there were four men in a little Chevy car in primary colored racing suits. I said to myself, "Self, was that Ok Go". I thought of hitting twitter to find out, but before I could I received an email from the PR firm of Ok Go saying "You may have just seen Ok Go during your Super Bowl Party, and you can check out their new video for their track "Needing/Getting" here". So I do check it out and you can too.
Maps and Atlases “Beware & Be Grateful”
Maps & Atlases have announced the release date for the Beware and Be Grateful, which is set for a US release on Tuesday, April 17. Below is a the album’s trailer.
Giving Tree Band on Audiotree
I’ve often felt that The Giving Tree Band were one of the more underrated band’s in the city, and their recent performance on Audiotree of their track "Cold Cold Rain" proves it.
The BBC Takes a Look at Philly Music Venues!
Dum Dum Girls and Widowspeak play Music Hall of W’burg on 02.07
Today we discovered that Los Angeles’ indie pop sensation Dum Dum Girls are partially based in NYC, since front lady Dee Dee currently calls The Big Apple home, while the rest of the band is still based in California. These often bare legged ladies will perform at the Music hall of Williamsburg on February 07 with Deli NYC favorite Widowspeak – a show dream pop lovers shouldn’t miss.
Pretend it’s summer with Summer Twins
So the groundhog may have predicted six more weeks of winter, but that doesn’t mean we can’t pretend it’s summertime. And well, in Southern California, winter is just a cooler summer. To accompany your daydreams of summertime, Riverside dream-pop duo Summer Twins are here to help you out. Made up of sisters Chelsea and Justine Brown, Summer Twins evokes the woozy laziness of a day at the beach. They channel a 50’s and 60’s sound that sonically glows. Think Best Coast, minus the talk about weed and cats. Their self-titled album was released last month, and in March they’ll be supporting Peter Case and Paul Collins, including a date at the Echo on the 7th of that month. – Taylor Lampela
Geographer is The Deli SF Best Emerging Band of 2011
Deli Readers,
Our SF Bay Area Year End Poll for emerging artists is finally coming to its end, and it’s great to see it won by Geographer, a great local band that gathered votes from our jury of San Fran scene makers (5 points), Deli writers (1 point) and readers (the band placed 4th in the open poll). These guys’ sound is something hard to pin down, and we are always proud when our polls highlight a truly original band. We are all looking forward to their upcoming release, scheduled for 02.28.
1. GEOGRAPHER
Beloved local group Shannon and the Clams (Bethany from Best Coast often sings their praises) placed 2nd with their lo-fi take on the nostaligic ’50s girl group sound – which can also evolve towards punk extremes (see video below). Third place was a tie between the two readers’ and fans’ poll contenders, spacey rockers Excuses for Skipping and orchestral indie rock collective The Family Crest. Kudos also to Whirr, a shoegazer act with a sound that challenges My Bloody Valentine as far as number of guitar layers. They placed 5th thanks to 5 jurors points (as many as the top two bands).

3a. THE FAMILY CREST

5. WHIRR

Thief @ Mercy Lounge, 2/2/12
Last night, or is it today? It is difficult to tell anything. The party still continues from the show at the Mercy Lounge on Thursday. It ain’t a party without smoke talkers on the back porch taking in the view of Gotham Nashville. The landscape is soon to be a giant parking lot once the convention center is built. The city is already a cement sea. We go inside the venue and immediately the music of Thief is engulfing. The song "Cadillacs" has just begun. Like most songs, the melody is classic, and the guitar-laden riffs blanket a heartbeat-style drum section and walking base. The song about ideals lost on the back roads of Tennessee is impossible not to dance to. For a band with a guitar-centric energy, Thief’s melodies are rhythmic and explosive. Thief was once known for 12-minute songs that played out like classical movements rather than short, to-the-point songs, but Thief remains drenched in the same reverence for creating complex musical landscapes textured in walking base lines, pounding drum beats that never get off beat, reminiscent of John Bonham and a guitar that transcends all genres, from Spanish classical to blues and jazz. Lead singer, Matt Tubandt, has become a frontman to reckon with in Nashville. "I have never seen a more entertaining performer on stage," says an audience member. Tubandt brings a fearless altruism, draining his energy out on every song so that the crowd can live vicariously through his onstage turmoil and reluctance to give anything less than his best.
Like all Thief shows, and I have been to a couple, the band bled their musical energy dry. It was a symphony of raw Nashville talent, and rehearsed elegance as a band coming together toward the creation of something unique. Thief cannot be compared to the local garage scene in Nashville. While the band would love to play with bands in that scene, they are happy creating their own niche. For bands like Thief, who do not fit into any mold that Nashville has readymade, gaining a fan is the same as gaining a friend. It happens one person at a time. The band invites anyone interested in hanging out after the show to come over to one of the guys’ houses to continue the night’s festivities. Because, like true rockers, to the guys of Thief, each show is a night-long spectacle. The guys will be playing at The 5 Spot on Feb 9 along with the Joy of Painting, Mom and Dad and the Mike Coleman Quartet. Expect a romping good time in East Nashville. The bar will be packed and the stage will be set ablaze with a night of live music and dancing. Come to the show. If you plan on filming the show or taking pictures, let the guys of Thief know, and they will get you in for free. See you there. – Dh Wright
