Lucius releases video + celebrates EP release at Bowery on 02.17
Rootsy ensemble Lucius once again exceeded our expectations with this stunning video of the song "Go Home" – the single from their upcoming EP. The band will celebrate its release in style with a show at Bowery Ballroom on February 17. Lucius will grace the cover of our upcoming NYC spring issue of The Deli – a spot they won by placing second in our Best of NYC Poll for Emerging Artists (since winners Caveman already were on a previous cover of The Deli).
Jack Wilson announces debut release + plays Hole in the Wall on 02.18
I came away from listening to Jack Wilson‘s new self-titled album believing that he truly has a very personal way of coating a rust tinged world with some beautiful colors, and a seemingly infinite amount of them. Trying to distance himself from the idea of making a concept album, he really gave himself the opportunity to sing in many voices. This approach allows the emotional ride of this album to be as unpredictable and varying as the course of any other natural human life, allowing it to breathe. Jack is about to release his debut album on Portland based Fluff & Gravy Records. You can catch him live in Austin at Hole in the Wall on February 18. – Michael H
Jamuel Saxon Release Pre-Madonna LP
Electro-pop outfit Jamuel Saxon started with a mission to make a more contemplative form of synth pop. But it simply wasn’t in their DNA – as they’ve progressed throughout the years, the San Diego natives realized their music would resonate better if they simply loosen up and make things more fun. Their debut full-length, Pre-Madonna, constantly surprises with its way-out, off the curb synth lines, frantic loops and heavily processed vocals. It finds them building a new sound, one that bursts with wonder and full-on release. You can listen to Pre-Madonna in its entirely on their Soundcloud page.
Best of The Deli Philly Poll – Top Performers: Slutever
If I was still an awkward teenage rebel trying to find my station in the world, Nicole Snyder and Rachel Gagliardi would be my heroes (at 29, they’re my total girl crushes). The two rad chicks behind the super rad duo Slutever are defining riot grrrl for the 21st century, smashing out bleeding fuzz struts pressed against sweaty post-punk blasts twisted around sweet girl-group vibes. But it’s more than just their beautifully bratty sound that makes you take notice – in addition to feeding the nostalgia of ’90s feminist youth, they’re blasting open the world for alt-tween girls who feel out of place both in their musical tastes and their collective consciousness. And hopefully that’s not just in Philadelphia. After all, as part of their breakthrough 2011, Slutever not only made their first-ever visit to SXSW, but they also hit the road this past summer for their first national tour (they did so by successfully launching a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the asphalt excursion, which offered pledgers a variety of unique gifts including a special Slutever prank call to their enemies and fantastical trip with the gals to the mall). 2011 also saw the release of their first 7-inch vinyl, Pretend to Be Nice via Bantic Media, which included two new songs plus two reworked tracks from 2010’s Sorry I’m Not Sorry; a contribution to Cactus Mouth’s Tears on My Pillow: Part II compilation series (they covered Wanda Jackson’s "Tongue Tied," and it’s the BEST); an exclusive recording of an original song “Rookie” for teen girl website RookieMag.com; a set for the much-loved Revolution Girl Style Again panel at Kelly’s Writer House that took place earlier in the year (they performed at The Rotunda, though, where the panel was live-streaming. All proceeds from show went to Girls Rock Philly.); and much more. If you take away anything from the Slutever experience, it should be this: Snyder and Gagliardi let girls know it’s okay to be strange, and that’s the best gift of all. Look out for more new material from the gals in 2012, which will include work with Fancy Time Studio’s Kyle “Slick” Johnson! (Photo by Randy Rivera) – Annamarya Scaccia

Serengeti “Shazam”
Serengeti has new ep coming out this March called "Kenny Dennis" via Anticon. He recently unveiled the first single from the ep, a track called "Shazam". This is the follow-up to 2011 fantastic release "Friends & Family". Kenny Dennis is a full-blown, slightly twisted, and die-hard Chicago alter-ego of Serengeti. For those who don’t know the back story, Kenny Dennis (Kdz) and Tha Grimm Teachaz were signed to Jive Records in ’93. After a Teachaz performance at the label’s showcase in Philly (other performers included the Fu-Schnickens and Tevin Campbell), Shaq-Fu got brazen and mocked Kenny’s mustache live on-stage.

Selebrities and Sports Illustrated – everybody loves indie!
It’s kind of interesting to see more and more cultural and publishing institutions embrace the cause of emerging indie bands, but we honestly didn’t see this one coming: Sports Illustrated decided to link their popular yearly swimsuit issue to… indie rock bands. We were rather excited at the idea of semi-nude pictures of young hipsters, but our lustful urge was disappointed. The musical artists are only present in this operation with their music, and we guess it’s better that way. Electro-pop ensemble Selebrities is the lucky band that will represent Brooklyn, and was also booked to play the 2 day, Las Vegas based "Swimsuit Beauties & Beats Music Festival," headlined by The Black Keys. Considering that The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit franchise reaches more than 70 million people annually, and more men 18 to 34 than the Super Bowl, this can only be seen as fantastic news for the indie cause – unless you would have rather given that kind of exposure to Chirstina Aguileira or something… Now go ahead Selebrities peeps, and blow those 70 million minds with your tunes!
