Here’s a new music video from Chiddy Bang for the track “By Your Side” that gives a little hometown love. The song does not appear on their forthcoming album Breakfast (due out Feb. 28), but they made this video “for the fans.” It was directed by Xaphoon Jones.
Caliph, Gates, and ChizMac — “Going Heavy”
The newest collaborative effort from Gates, ChizMac and Caliph—three rap artists from New Bedford, MA—has proven an immense success, from both a musical and business standpoint. The track, titled “Going Heavy,” has had over 2,000 hits on Youtube since it first dropped on January 19 of this year. According to Gates, the song was an attempt increase the buzz around his, Caliph’s and ChizMac’s own side-projects. In a conversation via Facebook, Gates explained that the group “came together and tried to make an anthem,” and judging by the tremendous online response, I’d say they have succeeded. “Goin Heavy” is a perfect balance of cocky rhymes and a powerful hook, anchored down by an unrelenting bass and snare drum-driven back-beat.
I was most impressed by the style and flow from this group. It’s clear from Caliph’s immediate entrance at the start of the video that these artists have an expert grasp on what makes an effective song (and video) and know how to portray that to the public. All three rappers are extremely animated in the delivery of their lines, each making witty, sometimes harsh commentary on their surroundings. Each member has a level of confidence and poise seldom found in the independent rap game. It was quite satisfying to hear such lyrical command coming from an indie rap trio.
If “Going Heavy” has you looking for more slick rhymes from this crew, each artist will be releasing his or her new material in the coming months. You can find updates about Gates on his Youtube Channel (http://www.youtube.com/user/
Power Animal Opening for This Will Destroy You, Mountains & Amen Dunes at FUC Feb. 10
Northeast Philly’s Power Animal a.k.a. Keith Hampson will be performing at the First Unitarian Church tonight. Though Hampson’s project has gone through many changes in the past year or so, no longer surrounded by a percussive and strangely endearing gang of misfits. What still lies at the root of his music that you’ve grown to know and love along with the rest of us is the ingenious experimental production work by Hampson coupled with his speak-sing vocals that give an intimate insight into an artist constantly struggling to find a balance within himself and the world around him. It’s very humanistic, and what probably draws you in and allows for your guard to be put down for a moment to truly experience the music of Power Animal. Now, that’s some pretty powerful stuff, and one reason why you should come out this evening and show your support to such a unique performer. And it doesn’t hurt that Hampson is a good dude trying to make the world a better place through his music and his charitable non-profit label Human Kindness Overflowing. You’ll also be treated to an interesting lineup of experimental acts when Power Animal opens for This Will Destroy You, Mountains and Amen Dunes. It’s a win-win situation. New Video: “Radio” (Live) – Busses
Below is a new song and video from Busses called “Radio.” It was recorded at the previous session that produced their video “Liar” from last year. The footage was filmed and edited by Joshua Camerote, audio was recorded by Jason Sexton, and the mural installation was provided by Bonnie Brenda Scott. Scott Soden also helped out drummer Nick Apice with the trippy visual images. You can expect an EP release and plenty of live dates coming this spring from the band.

Weekly Feature: Eula – live tonight (02.10) at NXT LVL
If Stephen Malkmus was reincarnated as a petite blonde woman from Connecticut, he’d be fronting the post-punk band EULA in the guise of Alyse Lamb, the vocalist for the now Brooklyn-based trio that also consists of bassist Jeff Maleri and drummer Nate Rose. They’ve released 6 videos in support of their 2011 LP "Maurice Narcisse," including a new documentary about the recent show they opened for post-punk icons Mission of Burma. The band recently opened for Mission of Burma at Music Hall of W’burg (see documentary here. You can see them live tonight (02.10) at the Bushwick Empire Prohibition Party @ NXT LVL (175 Stockholm St #102, BK)and on 02.24 at Shea Stadium w/ Indian Rebound, Lost Boy?, and Shark?. – Read Shanda Boyett’s interview with the band here.
Vacant Fever to Release Smouldering 7″
On their upcoming 7” EP KILL KILL KILL, Vacant Fever offer up electro-psych tunes with as much thrust and raw energy as any dance floor- or house party-tested albums out there. Due for release on March 6, its throbbing bass and gritty, fuzz-heavy guitarplay offer the ideal backdrop for a symphony of breathy vocals and Bolan-esque sighs. Striking somewhere between Silversun Pickups and the Rapture’s dance punk, the duo of Daniel Michael Miller and Leon Spinx deal in simple but infectious melodies that sound at once firmly grounded in a postmodern reality, and like a transmission from another planet. Despite the buzzing modernity and detachment that some of the EP’s five tracks might suggest, their authors say “inside all of us, a fire still burns, and intimacy is incredibly alive” – reason enough to get to know Vacant Fever better.

New to Brooklyn via Denver: Woodsman play Mercury on 02.17
Over the past couple years, Woodsman (recently relocated from Denver to Brooklyn) has been on a vision quest of sorts. Relentlessly touring and honing a sound born in basements and warehouses sprouting from amps and speakers like lichens on the forest floor. Grounded in experimentation and inspired by the films of Stan Brakhage, the band seeks to create visceral tunes born from their environment. The band’s two drummers are the focus of the sound, leaving room for the effected sounds conjured by the two guitar players. Constantly moving, shifting their collective consciousness toward something mutual. The band just announce the reissue of their 2 earlier EP in a single album entitled "Humdrum / Indoor Days EPs". Check them out live at The Mercury lounge on 02.17
Thee Midnight Creep Offers Chilling Lo-Fi Americana
Amid shaky reverberations, melancholy crooning and eerie whistles, Bill Campbell, or Thee Midnight Creep, delivers his signature gothically-inflected gospel on his latest release. I Lie Like a Dog at Your Feet is an album that can stand up to the works of the great shiver-inducing wordsmiths; Campbell’s brand of woozy folk is as macabre as any Edgar Allan Poe creation. Minimalist auto-harp accompaniment allows his stirring vocals, suggestive of a soul tormented, to take listeners hostage in a world of brocade, gnarled trees and perpetual dusk. The aptly named opener “Codeine” pairs heady instrumentation with woebegone lyrics that sound like they were uttered in a long empty hallway. The song, and the album, act as an auditory narcotic – hypnotic, calming and, ultimately, hard to let go. But don’t take our word for it – Thee Midnight Creep will be performing live on KEXP at 8 p.m. on February 18.

Repairing mini-poll for Best of LA 2011 for Emerging Artists
Dear Deli LA Readers,
Sometimes people make mistakes, and some other times trusted web codes behave erratically. A combination of these two things caused the omission of 5 artists from the recently concluded Best of LA 2011 Fans’ and Readers’ Poll, something that we realized only when we started adding up the votes. We sincerely apologize for this inconvenience.
We gave a lot of thought about how to fix this, and it seems like the only acceptable way is to give these 5 bands the opportunity to accumulate their fans’ votes in a week-long "repairing" poll, which you can find on the right column of this page or here. This will also give us an opportunity to include 3 more bands that were picked by a juror who replied to our request for voting after the deadline.
For this reason the final results of the LA poll are postponed until the end of next week.
Also, if the winner of this poll gets more votes than the winner of the main Fans’ and Readers’ Poll ended erlier in the month (results here), we will consider both the top bands as poll winners – same goes for all the other top positions.
Just trying to be fair and get ourselves out of a messy situation, hope you understand!

Best of The Deli Philly Poll – Top Performers: Psychic Teens
For a band that’s only a little over a year old, Psychic Teens is making a lot of headway in the local music scene. When we first discovered their debut tracks “YUNG” and “CbbK,” it was no-brainer to feature them in our “What’s This?” column. They then went on to win our Featured Artist(s) Poll in August (you can read our interview HERE). The power trio (made up of guitarist/vocalist Larry Ragone, bassist Joe Decarolis, and drummer Dave Cherasaro) eventually released their 7-track debut LP, Teens, in October via Golden Voyage Records to positive blogosphere buzz, put out the rad 3-song video collection “Tapes” on VHS for Video/Horror/Show (also available through Aquarius Records), and revealed the drug-induced, retro-fitted video for “Dose” from Teens. But it’s hard not to take notice of a band whose sonic personality involves aphotic renderings of post-punk noise slinking through no-wave sludge set beneath goth-wave monotone chants. In other words: TOO BADASS TO IGNORE. (Photo by John Berry) – Annamarya Scaccia

Best of Austin Readers’ and Fans’ Poll Results: Equals, Auto Body and The Preservation
Deli Readers
,
After a somewhat dramatic competition, atmospheric psych/post rockers Equals won our Best of Austin Readers’ and Fans’ Poll for Emerging Artists, congrats to them! Kudos also to electro-rock duo Auto Body, who placed 2nd, and alt-folk ensemble The Preservation, third in this list. Great bands and great variety!
Boy (the band) also deserves a mention here. They were leading the poll when they realized that a fan was helping them gather votes through illicit hacking. If everybody showed this kind of integrity the world would be a much better place – we want you guys in Congress! We decided to cut down their votes to 5% of the total, so that they would still appear in the top five, since it’s very likely that at least a portion of those votes was legitimate.
