Weekend Warrior, January 13 – 15

Phonographic Arts are hosting a local’s only show full of gothic/post-punk influenced psychedelic noise this Sunday night at their new home and a new favorite hangout of ours, The Level Room. Starting the night off will be dark/bluesy punks Latern, followed by the noisy psych rock of Harsh Vibes. Headlining the night’s bill will be the psychedelic post-punk of Far-Out Fangtooth, who had a break out year in 2011 on the heels of their well-received debut LP, Pure & Disinterested via Siltbreeze. The record found the group expanding their sound from their early days of Cramps-esque garage punk, to the aforementioned gothic/psychedelic post punk. Far-Out Fangtooth also have a new 7” coming out in the near future via HoZac Records. I know that it is on Sunday, but don’t sleep on this show! New Track: “Haunted Heart” – Dream Brother (Feat. Free Energy’s Paul Sprangers)

Posted on:

Free Energy have been pretty quiet lately while they work on their sophomore album with producer John Agnello. However, lead vocalist Paul Sprangers recently collaborated with long-time pal Ian Anderson from One for the Team, who has a new 7” coming out under the moniker Dream Brother via his own label Afternoon Records. Check out their most enjoyable new track “Haunted Heart” below. Anderson has also recruited the help of John Venderslice for the project, and you can take a listen to their collaboration “Pretty Eyes” HERE. Enjoy!

Permanent Wave Philly Presenting a Girls Rock Philly Benefit Show at Cha-Cha’Razzi Jan. 13

Posted on:

Permanent Wave Philly is having a benefit show for Girls Rock Philly, a much-beloved local volunteer-based non-profit music and mentoring organization dedicated to empowering girls and young women, tonight at South Philly’s Cha-Cha’Razzi with Trophy Wife, Very Happy, Nona, Carmen, and The Adults. Permanent Wave Philly is a branch of the original New York City-based Permanent Wave (which was started by former Titus Andronicus member Amy Klein). It is a network and community of feminist artists and activists who seek to challenge gender inequality not only in all forms of the arts, but also in politics, personal lives, and anywhere else it seems necessary. The organization believes that women should see each other as collaborators and inspirations, not rivals. It aspires to disprove the belief that “feminism is dead” and continue what was started generations ago by creating and strengthening a revolutionary arts movement and community that’s relevant to women, queer, and trans people. Come out and support ladies who rock this evening! Cha-Cha’Razzi, (More Info HERE), 7pm, $5 – $ 10, All Ages – Alexis V.

The Big Sleep launch “Ace” video, release sophomore album

Posted on:

Some bands can be appreciated better when driving at night, and aware of their "night-driving-affinity", The Big Sleep – who belong to the restrict cirlce of bands that landed on the cover of our rag – launched a self-shot video that has a lot of… night driving in it. This duo-plus-drums’s strength has always been their epic riffs and wall of guitars, and "Ace" doesn’t disappint in those departments. Welcome back big sleepers!

Luminol Release Mixes the Beautiful with the Bone-chilling

Posted on:

Avant-indie sextet Luminol experiment with contrasting sounds and scenes on their most recent release, Locked In The Woods, which first saw light back in August. Building off of 2009’s Organ Grinder EP, the band doesn’t shy away from the mysterious and the macabre on their latest offering. Unsettling wails, hisses and plucked strings set the tone on sophomore track “Right Hand Man”, and the fretwork of guitarists Andy Ayers and Chris Winter is as delicate and prickling as the chills it sends down your spine. The track is the stuff of Grimm’s darkest fairy tales, but is contrasted by the melodic violin, and Barbara Burgio’s plaintive vocals, on “Squeaking Soul”. The track is the lullaby leading up to the host of dreamlike, and sometimes haunting, tunes that follow – Luminol still definitely gravitate towards the creepy, with bass lines that border on menacing and lyrical delivery that recalls the films of Tim Burton. For listeners up for an evening of boundary-pushing, atmospheric compositions, the band will be playing material from Locked In The Woods at the Skylark Café and Club on Jan. 20. with the Little Black Bottles, and Seeing Blind.

The Deli Philly’s Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner: Psychic Babble

You might know Colin Frangicetto as the guitarist for local area rockers Circa Survive. Well, he recently released his latest solo effort My Brother’s Ears/My Sister’s Eyes EP (which we’ve been digging, and you can download the album for free HERE) under his moniker Psychic Babble (cool band name). Frangicetto also just won our Featured Artist(s) Poll so we had a chance to find out more about the nice dude/PETA-friendly musician from Doylestown HERE.
