Pokey LaFarge, W.B. Givens @ Mercy Lounge, 12/6

Posted on:

Nothing can trump the dark and surly romps that Legendary Shack Shakers were dishing out at Mercy last Saturday, but there’s a great lineup nonetheless of grassroots troubadours tomorrow night. Local Lance Whalen has a dark but evocative singer/songwriter brand, and fellow Nashvillian W.B. Givens mashes the blues of his Mississippi homeland with the bluegrass of Appalachia. Both are opening for Pokey LaFarge and the South City Three, who blew into Nashville from St. Louis with an old-timey hodgepodge of ragtime, jazz and western swing. We wouldn’t recommend Americana singer/songwriter types if they were just dime-a-dozen. $10 at 8 p.m.

Frank Smith Release of Track “A Decline” + Upcoming Tour

Posted on:

In lieu of the upcoming release of their 3rd full-length album Before You Were Born, indie rock band Frank Smith is debuting several tracks off their LP before it drops early next year. The album will not see an official 12” vinyl format release until early 2012. As part of a track series, however, “A Decline” is the second of three songs that has been released as promotional feed for their album. Showcasing reverb-laden riffs with crooning vocals and a slight flare of twang, “A Decline” is simply a taste, and a good one at that, of what Before You Were Born will offer. Choosing to stick with previous producer/engineer Alex Lyon, the band returned to local Austin studio The Bubble to record Before You Were Born on live tape. With this fresher approach, Before You Were Born is seen by the band as a new birth and direction, sure to receive warm accolade from press and fans alike. In addition to the soon-to-be-released album is Frank Smith’s ongoing tour, which will continue during Austin’s infamous Free Week with a show at The Mohawk on January 3rd. The Mohawk will host Before You Were Born’s release party as well, which will take part on January 19th.

Copperfox

Posted on:

Copperfox aren’t wild. They’re honest, and they open up slow. Their rebellion lies in the haunt of serious, gentle melodies and quiet adoration. Welcome to their world of two, where soft country elegance meets a fondness that is palpable, honey deep. Love is here; take a listen.

The hush-hush project of a petite, indelible duo, Copperfox consists of two lovers full up on heart and soul. Lisa Garcia and Rory Mohon first began to tickle their musical future together on the island of Maui back in 2008, where jobless, they sought comfort in the separate realms of their own creative outlets – Lisa with her etchings and Rory with his guitar. That is until Rory needed a voice.

Once back on the mainland, it took the Washington-Oregon border between them, plus some good strong drinks and a lonesome, heartsick home, for Lisa to come to terms with the fact that she was that voice. Since then, a band of believers was formed, and a record made. Songs off their soft-hearted, meticulously crafted EP, From the Den, began trickling out of their love nest in Spring 2011. And like the sly creature that is the tiniest of canines, Copperfox are finally ready to play outside. See them perform live, for the very first time, at the Portland Bazaar on Sunday, December 11th at 4pm. – Morgan Brothers

Warm up the record players for Neverever

Posted on:

With fuzzy female vocals and an indie pop sound that recalls the crooning melodies of the ’60s and ’70s, Neverever is one of those bands that just needs to be listened to on vinyl. You can almost hear the pop and hiss of vinyl on the band’s newest single, "Wedding Day." The song starts with a bright bass line, but soon becomes saturated in vintage sounds with whirling and distorted guitars. The song is a preview of Neverever’s upcoming EP, entitled "Shake-A-Baby," which is set to be released on January 17 via Slumberland Records. In the same manner as "Wedding Day," the band promises that the 5-song EP will follow themes about young love and a resistance to growing up. In preparation of the release of "Shake-A-Baby," Neverever will be the resident band at the Echo every Monday night in December. Joining them throughout the month will be other Los Angeles favorites, including Cold Showers, Residual Echoes, Dunes and Sea Lions. – Karla Hernández

Alex Winston’s “Velvet Elvis” EP and video

Posted on:

We just realized that Alex Winston released this video for the song "Velvet Elvis" back in August, but it doesn’t look like her team did anything to promote it, at least in the US – no trace of it on the major music blogs like Stereogum, Prefix and Pitchfork. We thought our readers might enjoy it. There is also a similarly titled EP out, probably promotion is about to start as we speak?

Deli premiere: Field Mouse video + live at Big Snow Buffalo Lodge on 12.22

Posted on:

It’s never a bad time to have our ears wrapped in a gorgeously atmospheric shoegaze-pop sound. Field Mouse‘s video "You Guys Are Gonna Wake Up My Mom" adds a very appropriate visual component to the band’s single, by playing with lead singer Rachel Browne’s pale, porcelain complexion, stylishly cut dark hair (with one carefully placed feathery blonde streak) and full ruby red lips. The lead singer’s features are treated with various blurring effects and filters, in a way comparable to what the band does on a sonic level to the song’s melody and sounds: reverbered vocals and layers of guitars bring back to mind iconic 90’s dream-pop band "Lush". Multiple images of her, the band and select footage (buildings, flames) all contribute to a visually psychedelic presentation, conveying an overall feeling of uplift and beauty. "Fall asleep – you might just feel brand new," Rachel sings. "I should know, I do the same thing too" she adds with lovely clarity. What’s not to like? – See Field Mouse at the Big Snow Buffalo Lodge (new Brooklyn performance space) on December 22. – Dave Cromwell

Emily Greene opens for Yuna at SOB’s on December 11

Posted on:

Berklee is known for pushing out a certain type of musician. The school is usually associated with the jazz-influenced, folk set you’ve heard in graduates like Julienne Dweck and Jen Hirsch. With Emily Greene however, something different found its way through the guitar and voice lessons. Unlike her peers, Greene’s songs work their way through to you on a much more visceral level, not unlike the how the ladies from Lucius do it, Emily’s old college roommates and go-to collaborators. In performance, ideas are thrown together and batted around until they work themselves into a frenzy. Broadcast through Emily’s powerhouse pipes and washed down with her intimate lyrical range, her shows are not a typical classroom experience. Come out and see what I mean when Emily supports Malaysian artist Yuna at SOB’s on Dec 11th. – Mike Levine (@goldnuggets)

Northwest Bands Featured in Smiths Tribute

Posted on:

For some, the winter holidays are a time of warmth and togetherness, shared with friends and loved ones. For others, it is a time of acute anxiety, insecurity and, sometimes, even ostracism. If you (or perhaps someone on your gift-giving list) fall into the latter category, then the season might just be the perfect time for the release of Please, Please, Please, a new compilation of tributes to the masters of angst-ridden romanticism, the Smiths. Washington outfits Solvents and Telekinesis have lent their talents to the 20-track ode to Morrissey et al, performing “Is It Really So Strange?” and “Sheila Take a Bow”, respectively. The album is due for release on Dec. 13 from American Laundromat Records.
