We Are Augustines’ album named “Best Alternative Album” in iTunes “Rewind”

Posted on:

Brooklyn-bred band We Are Augustines’ debut album ‘Rise Ye Sunken Ships’ was just named “Best Alternative Album” of 2011 in the iTunes "REWIND" Year End Round Up. Guitarist and lead vocalist Billy McCarthy (ex Pela) and bassist and keyboardist Eric Sanderson poured incredible amounts of emotion into the band’s debut album — which tells the story of McCarthy’s difficult past. We Are Augustines is scheduled to perform at the Xfm Winter Wonderland concert in London alongside The Horrors, Band of Skulls and more on Wednesday, December 14. – Christine Cauthen

The War on Drugs Making Late Night TV Debut on Jimmy Fallon!

Posted on:

Yay – The War on Drugs will be making their late night television debut on Jimmy Fallon! According to One Thirty BMP, the local road warriors will be making an appearance on the indie music-friendly talk show on Tuesday, January 10. Philly in the house representin’ – yo! (BTW: Regarding other Fallon news, ?uestlove will no longer have free reign in choosing music for the guest walk-ons anymore after the whole uproar about the Michele Bachmann incident last month. He will now have to clear the music with three lamestream NBC suits, and is not allowed to tweet about the whole Bachmann thing. Unfortunately, welcome to corporate America ?uesto.)

Miracles of Modern Science release debut LP “Dog Year”

Posted on:

Self described as "orchestral space-pop," Miracles of Modern Science present themselves through a press picture that looks like a kids guide to the string section. Although they play violin, mandolin, cello, and double bass, the quintet’s music has nothing classical about it – besides the instrumentation of course. Two highlights from their first LP "Dog Year" (out now) are the fast paced opener "MOMS AWAY!," with throbbing drums and raw-ish vocals, and "Tensity," with its contained, intricately plucked verse which unexpectedly explodes in a rock-estral chorus. Check out also "Eating Me Alive, streaming below. – Molly Horan

The Return of Kontiki: Cotton Mather’s 1997 Classic Re-issued

Posted on:

Not so long and yet very long ago, or fourteen years ago to be more precise, the beloved Austin power pop band Cotton Mather released Kontiki. And then, despite being a favorite of both Britt Daniel of Spoon and Liam Gallager of Oasis, not to mention the Guardian, Uncut, and Mojo (who all gave it raves) it fell out of print. To this day vets of the Austin music scene will corner you in bars and tell you what about the tremendous being of Cotton Mather. And now Kontiki returns! Bandleader Robert Harrison has prepared a double-CD deluxe edition set for a Valentine’s Day 2012 release on his Star Apple Kingdom label. Check out the sneaky-hilarious promo film and prepare to recapture your own sense of late 90s glory.

Incidentally, it’s a good book too

Tin Horses, Levee Drivers & Bronze Float at KFN Dec. 8

Posted on:

There is a sweet local lineup tonight at Kung Fu Necktie that will make braving the sudden chill worth it. Philly’s latest answer to “What would Crazy Horse sound like if they were influenced by our local music scene?” will be laying down some feedback and raunchy guitar licks this evening from KFN’s cozy, little stage. Led by Purling Hiss bassist Kiel Everett, Tin Horses will be handing out some fine countrified roots rock to us city slickers. And helping them keep the sounds and fashion of denim-clad rural rock in vogue for the night will be Bucks County good ole boys Levee Drivers with the lonesome prairie howl of lead vocalist August Lutz. (I’m really excited to hear that they are finally recording some new material.) This one-two combination should bring out the whiskey drinking modern day cowboy in all of us tonight. Opening the bill will be the sensitive chilled out experimental pop of Bronze Float. Definitely looking forward to this one! Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $8, 21+ – Q.D. Tran

Matthew Dear releases ‘Headcage’ EP + premieres video

Posted on:

Matthew Dear‘s latest audio/video excursion combines the upbeat title track from his new ‘Headcage EP’ with mesmerizing abstraction from London-based director Morgan Beringer. The video looks like vintage footing of the creation of the universe, while the song sounds like early Japan somehow enhanced electronically – very cool indeed. Oh and check out the "wtf" ending! This single is the title-track of Matthew Dear’s upcoming "Headcage" EP, out on January 17.

Virgin Islands to Tour in New Year

Posted on:

Post-punk dissidents Virgin Islands will embark on another tour in the New Year, after spending much of 2011 on the road in support of their first full-length release, Ernie Chambers v. God. Singer/guitarist Mike Jaworski, drummer Aaron Ball, guitarist Chris Meyer and bassist Chuck Keller deliver a one-two of rumbling bass lines and searing guitar play that compliments the band’s frequently provocative lyrical bent. Punctuated by Ball’s driving rhythm, Virgin Islands’ first EP lives up to the promise of their four-track 2009 debut, The Age of Anxiety, which turned heads and teased palates eager for a taste of gritty, blistering and most of all, insurgent new music. The band will kick off their next 11-date tour in Seattle early in 2012.

February 17              Neumo’s (with Cursive and Ume)
