Shlohmo – Trapped in a Burning House Video

Posted on:

Earlier this year, Los Angeles producer/visual artist Shlohmo released Bad Vibes, an utterly inventive aural experience that thrusts sparse, yet gleaming electronic beets hovering over fizzling snippets of ambient noise. One of the album’s highlights, Trapped in a Burning House, fills a claustrophic space with dreadful, cacophonous drone and a slowly precipitating guitar squall. The track’s promotional video is just as tenebrous – it follows what seems like a man dragging his vicim streched across a dark woodland, littered with quick-second editing techniques to give us some background about the person in question to better understand his fate. Since its concept is elusive, for better lack of the term, it’s best to open your imagination and let the bleak, subject-matter transfix you into an unsettling place.

The (stilysh) Peach Kings

Posted on:

LA/ San Fransico duo The Peach Kings hold an intriguing mishmash of sounds. One minute, the duo of Steven Trezevant and Page Wood twist their twangy blues riffs with airy synth loops fit for a bar brawl. The next, they’ll write a breezy peaceful melody to embellish its classic pop sound, perfect for a pleasant night drive back home. See them play live at Boootleg Theatre on Monday, November 21st.

Kirby Kaiser @ Hard Rock

Posted on:

At just 19 it hard to imagine how Kirby Kaiser could have risen any faster into the center of the Chicago music scene. She released her self-titled debut EP back in September, and the buzz has been building ever since. Kirby builds on the sound of the ’60’s girl-group pop sound, but clearly has a vision all of her own.

Kirby Kaiser will be performing at the VitaminWater Winterescape Party 2011 on Dec 2nd at Hard Rock Hotel’s Fender Ballroom with Smith Westerns.

The Washroom Sessions: Female Duo Girl Parts + Cayamo Cruise

Posted on:

Briana Gokay knows how to grab some serious attention with those pipes of hers, and I’m not talking about the plumbing in her bathroom. What began as an innocent conception of a band name but inadvertently led to other presumed connotations, alternative blues duo Girl Parts, consisting of sisters-in-law Briana (vocals) and sixteen-year-old guitarist Kacie Gayman, has been creating music since January 2011. And with the potential for a spot on Cayamo Cruise 2012, the two are sure to breach the proverbial surface with a massive musical breakthrough.

After recording and completing a brief tour around the South, Briana and Kacie have literally hit the showers in hopes of becoming an act on the 5th Annual Cayamo Cruise, a weeklong cruise held in February 2012 that brings together a slew of renowned national artists (Lyle Lovett, The Civil Wars, John Prine and The Belle Brigade among them). Essentially, Girl Parts had been recording videos of their songs in a bathroom to gain better acoustics. When Sixthman’s CEO Andy Levine found them on YouTube and suggested Cayamo, the girls turned their recording sessions into a promotional venture by asking fans to help them “from the bathroom to the boat” for a chance to perform on the cruise.

While Briana and Kacie are preparing to record their debut EP, their YouTube channel currently carries all of their video recordings. “Arlene,” “On the Way of My Return,” and “Always Knew,” all Girl Parts originals, hold true to their blues-alternative-country vibe and are glazed with a delicate layer of pop flair. In their intimate cover of “Mama Don’t Like My Man” by Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings, Briana truly eludes to a sense of musical poignancy through passionate delivery. Matched by Kacie’s soul-ridden powerchords, her voice is steadfast and resonating, holding tangible wisps of folk, rock and blues influences. Though awesomely powerful and vibrant, Briana still manages to convey melodies with a sense of gentleness and warmth. In other words, think of her as the hypothetical love child shared between Ray LaMontagne and Adele. For Girl Parts, their signature display of a beautifully drawn out and almost contradictory notion of force meets subtlety will not only prove their pass onto Cayamo, but also prove their pass into the limelight. –Whitney LeFevre

My Double, My Brother – What We Found Beneath The Ground

Posted on:

The Orange County-based quintet My Double, My Brother recently released its debut LP, What We Found Beneath The Ground. The fivesome connected while attending Southern California’s BIola University, through the college’s music program, and began performing under the moniker, “The Fragrance.” Under this name, the band released a few EPs and toured a bit, but after a few musical shifts, the trained musicians not only had a new LP, but a new name as well. Listening to the record, it is evident that the band members studied music. The sound is so tight and technical that it is hard to believe this is a freshman effort. Calling on the usual indie suspects—guitar, bass, keys, drum, vocals—My Double, My Brother has released a solid folk/indie album that drips with Mumford and Sons and Arcade Fire influences, while maintaining its own sound that will surely create buzz in the blogosphere. – Katrina Nattress

Found in the NYC Open Blog: Ben Lear

Posted on:

Two years ago Brooklyn pop songwriter Ben Lear had an idea to write an album that tells the story of a young guy convinced that everything he’s ever lost in his life has drifted out to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. This seed expanded into Lillian, "an edgy and experimental folk-opera blending acoustic guitar songs with percussive chamber and orchestral music" (LA Times). For the first time ever, a full-realization of Lillian came to Le Poisson Rouge on Oct. 25, complete with a 20-piece band/orchestra, gospel choir, light sculptures made from plastic bottles, costumes, projected animation and more. Ben also plays more intimate shows, the next one will be at Rockwood Music Hall on December 26. – (as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here).
