In Case You Missed It: Kina Grannis’ yummy music video For “In Your Arms”
Kiwi, Peach, Bubble Gum, Coconut and Green Apple are some of the many flavors of Jelly Belly jellybeans used to create Kina Grannis’ latest music video for "In Your Arms". Inspired by jellybean art, director Greg Jardin, decided to create a tasty time-consuming masterpiece by shooting in stop motion animation using 288,000 jellybeans, spread throughout 2,460 frames and filmed for 1,357 hours. The whole process took over a year to complete. Warning: you may find yourself with a sweet tooth by the end of the video. – Nicole Dawley
CHROME WINGS
Chrome Wings’ New Lands LP shows the duo’s pop sensibilities refracted through aquatic haze and liquid texture, advancing beyond a lo-fi aesthetic into new terrain defined by marina trenches and echolocation. While not departing from their tradition of creating dense, electronically indebted grooves, on this album Chrome Wings take the listener in a wholly accessible quest for a figurative Lost City. The abstract pattern on the cover harkens the fish-eye POV which refracts the pop sensibilities on New Lands, signifying a proverbial plunge into this trans-dimensional frame of mind and genre. The title track is an appropriate introduction to the ebulliantly rhythmic pulse which informs the album, where Chrome Wings guide the listener through a familiar, yet wholly alien landscape, propelled along by a dubby baseline. This self-described brand of dub-pop allows the gurgling synths to come up for air and symbiotically co-exist within the rhythmic consistency of each song. "Sky Mirage" could be the soundtrack to accompany the future discovery of Atlantis, triumphant in its progression towards an inevitable epiphany of decaying architecture framed by a horizon of underwater light. Instead of detracting from Chrome Wings’ pop ethos, the viscous effects filtered through each synthesizer, guitar, drum machine and vocal track synchronize into a symbiotic ecorhythm that gradually acculturates the listener to the depths of this band’s progression and talent in creating such a melodic and evocative soundscape. – Wyatt Schaffner
Caveman’s debut album “CoCo Beware” in stores today + live at Other Music on 11.22
"CoCo Beware", the debut release of psych-pop quintet Caveman – who graced the cover of The Deli’s summer issue – is today available in stores through their own label Magic Man! Records / ORG Music. We have a hard time believing these guys had to self-release this fantastic record. The good folks at Other Music invited the band to perform an in-store show on November 22 – we’ll be there! In December Caveman will be embarking on their first West Coast tour. – Read the 27th issue of The Deli NYC (with Caveman on the cover) in pdf format here. Read the html feature about the band here.
Philly/NYC Noise-math Power Trio Many Arms Sign to Tzadik Records & Announce 3rd LP
Congrats to Many Arms for recently signing a deal with John Zorn’s Tzadik Records! Composed by some seriously skilled musicians who have toured and played with the likes of Marnie Stern, Nat Baldwin and Tera Melos among others, the Philly/NYC-based power trio plays a loud, aggressive blend of punk and free jazz, tied together with compositions that twist and turn through angular unison melodies and complex rhythmic patterns. The band has been around since 2007, and just announced that they will be releasing their 3rd full-length album in March 2012. Cheers!
Wyldlife release new video + please Lit on December 2nd.
New York-based garage/punk rockers Wyldlife exhibit their wild side on their recently released self-titled album. However, opening track, newly adapted into a music video, “City of Inbreds” demonstrates a more subdued and sweet side to the band, while maintaining outbursts of their characteristic rambunctiousness. “Dangerous" Dave Feldman sings and snarls, narrating the scenes of the band performing amidst mild debauchery, backstage shenanigans, and everything rock ‘n roll-related, from tattoos and alcohol, to girls (of course!) The quartet will be out and about in the coming months, playing the East Village’s Lit Lounge on December 2. http://www.myspace.com/wyldlife7 –Meijin Bruttomesso
New Track: “Ray Charles” – Chiddy Bang
Chiddy Bang premiered the first single from their delayed upcoming full-length album Breakfast called “Ray Charles” yesterday via Rolling Stone. According to Chiddy, “The song actually started out as a joke when my brother, Cheeseburger Don, got so high he fell asleep in the studio with his sunglasses on. I looked over and he reminded me of Ray Charles, probably because I was high, too. I started freestyling about him and we laid it down right there.” You can take a listen to the weed-influenced track below.
Power Animal & Gracie Opening for Balam Acab at JB’s Nov. 15
It’s not hidden at all that I have a lot of love and respect for the work of Power Animal (a.k.a. Keith Hampson). There is simply something about his brand of experimental pop that gets my endorphins flowing and makes me want to share the joy with others. Now, if only Hampson would release his new EP Exorcism already, it was originally scheduled to come out before the end of summer, but as you can tell by the changing climate, that time has come and gone. Hopefully it’s actually a good sign that the delay is because he’s found a record label smart enough to release the album. Well, tonight’s lineup will be a great opportunity for you to experience Power Animal surrounded by other very interesting like-minded artists. Gracie (a.k.a. Andrew Balasia) has only made his presence known on the local music scene since this past summer, but his tranquil soundscapes have already garnered some attention. The Small Plates Records crew are demonstrating the utmost confidence in the young artist by releasing his upcoming album in January 2012. Both acts will be opening for Mechanicsburg’s Balam Acab (a.k.a. Alec Koone) who has been earning plenty of his own deserved praise under the moniker. It should be an evening filled with stone-y jams so smoke ‘em if ya got ‘em. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $12, 21+ – Q.D. Tran
