Snowmine release new track + play The Loft and Cake Shop

Posted on:

Snowmine impressed us at our flagship CMJ show at Pianos, where they opened for Caveman and The Stepkids. The band yesterday released a new track (available for streaming here) which they wrote and recorded in less than 48 hours. "Curfews" features a sound that’s dreamier than most of this band’s repertoire, enjoy it and don’t miss their next live performances at The Loft (Hoboken) on 11.18 and Cake Shop on 12.08. The band also premiered a new interesting video about their "found object" approach to recording here.

The baddest bunch in town: Black Bananas

Posted on:

Sometimes it seems like the key to keeping it fresh is through reinvention. Jennifer Herrema, formerly of influential groups Royal Trux and RTX, is revamping the band (RTX) she’s been with since 2002 into the newly imagined Black Bananas, and they’re ready to take over the rock scene. They will be releasing their first full-length album as Black Bananas Rad Times Xpress IV at the end of January, but before that you can check out their cover of the Rolling Stones’ "Before They Make Me Run" with Kurt Vile. It’s got Herrema’s signature female rock wail over pounding guitars, and be sure to listen all the way to the end for a sax solo. Rock on. – Taylor Lampela

Dr. Dog Announce New LP Due Out Feb. 7

Posted on:

There has been a lot of news coming out of the Dr. Dog camp this November. Earlier in the month, they announced that they’ll be releasing a new two-song 7” for Record Store Day’s new celebration of Black Friday (November 25). Yesterday came the word that they’ll be cramming themselves and some lucky fans into Kung Fu Necktie on November 22 for a show in a more intimate setting than you can usually see the band these days. They also scheduled two all ages shows for March 24 and 25 at the Electric Factory. And today comes the announcement of a new twelve-song full-length entitled Be the Void coming out on February 7 via ANTI- Records. The songs on the record were tracked live to try and capture the energy of their live performances. Expect to hear a more rollicking “cathartic rock ‘n’ roll album” this time around. You can check out the LP’s track list below.

The Wheeler Brothers’ “Home For The Holidays” Video + Contest

Posted on:

When Tyler, Nolan and Patrick Wheeler teamed up with friends A.J. Molyneaux and Danny Matthews, they created more than a crisp, fiery Americana indie-rock five-piece; they created a band of brothers. The Wheeler Brothers, actual and “from other mothers” alike, are currently on tour in support of their debut album Portraits, released this summer. Portraits supports songs like “Mississippi” and “Call Me In The Morning" which boast rock driven rhythms, pseudo-distorted guitar riffs and fronted, clear vocals. On the cool side of the pillow, tracks like “Home For The Holidays” and “Save The Nightly (Too Young),” tend to lean casually toward gospel influences and airier melodies.

The Wheeler Brothers’ recent music video “Home For The Holidays” proves warm and light-hearted. Featuring actor Art LaFleur (The Sandlot, Field of Dreams) and directed by Christian Sorensen Hansen(The Head in the Heart, Fences, Atmosphere), “Home For The Holidays” portrays a simple lesson in friendship as shared between a manager and his employees. Moreover, The Wheeler Brothers are hosting a “Home For The Holidays” contest in lieu of their new video. Running until December 8th, the contest will send one lucky winner home to be with their family and friends for the holiday season. Make sure to visit their Facebook page and watch their humorous informative video to gather more contest details. –Whitney LeFevre

From the NYC Open Blog: The Sweet One’s video with Occupy Wall Street Footage

Posted on:

Here’s a video focused on the Occupy Wall Street protest by Brooklyn’s The Sweet Ones, a band that in this particular song sounds like The Clash would have if were they were born in Nashville. Their music is definitely appropriate for this kind of footage, not to mention the title of the song, "Kids at the Bottom". – (as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here). Honey Locust

Posted on:

Allow us to take a moment to talk about our most recent folk fascination: gypsy folkies Honey Locust – we’re really digging their violas, accordions and banjo. Below you can hear two pretty tracks, “A Softer Someday” and “Blood of the Bleak,” both of which are available as free downloads. Be sure to catch them at The End with Hymn For Her Nov. 30.

The Deli SF Plays Catch Up

Posted on:

Since it’s November, the year-end lists are soon to be pouring in, which means it’s time to scrutinize your music library and recognize the embarrassment that you gave Kreayshawn twenty more spins than tUnE-YarDs (what a philistine!) and to take note that you really, really, really loved the new Girls record. In undertaking this mass analysis of your 2011 music, it may also become apparent that you missed a lot.

The Deli is guilty too. In fact, it’s been more than a year since the release of a few albums that certainly should have been on our radar. But thankfully the Internet is a forgiving place that allows us to listen to the past and post in real time! Here are three bands that we missed, but…you know, things…happen and umm…please don’t hate us!

Dina Maccabee, Who Do You Suppose You Are
Release date: October 2010
Months late mentioning: 13
Why it still matters: Aside from having an adorable name, Dina Maccabee also has a damn impressive resume that includes playing strings on records with The Morning Benders and Vetiver, plus appearing live alongside Sufjan Stevens and Wilco. Pairing the accomplished and Bay-based Maccabee up with her guitarist friend Tobin Summerfield resulted in a Sara Bareilles-esque album…and it’s great! We’re surprised VH1 hasn’t picked this lady up as a ‘You Oughta Know’ artist yet, which makes us feel good we’re not the only ones missing out on amazing music. Phew.

Brookhaven, When The Chorus Walks
Release date: August 16, 2010
Months late on mentioning: 15
Why it still matters: Oaktowner Sonny James’ solo project of ambient guitars kind of reminds us of Real Estate (as does his bands name…doesn’t Brookhaven sound like some sweet suburban real estate?) but since the 2011 Real Estate album isn’t that amazing, maybe you’ll enjoy this 2010 record in all its glorious obscurity.

Shuteye Unison, Our Future Selves
Release Date: November 16, 2010
Months late mentioning: 12
Why it still matters: Apparently Shuteye Unison’s sophomore effort, Our Future Selves, was based on one guiding principle: "Sexability Above All." Sexability? Sounds good to us. Sign me up.
