From Our Open Blog: NORTHPILOT New Single “1000 Lives”

Posted on:

It was another trademark hot and humid windy city summer, and Chicago indie rock stalwarts Northpilot spent much of it hunkered down in its air-conditioned studio working on new material for its upcoming long player. The initial results from these sessions are the songs "1000 Lives," the first single from the upcoming full length, along with b-side "Maps and Dragons."

Northpilot is performing on October 28th at Goose Island Wrigleyville with Songbirds of the Pacific Northwest, Valentiger, Mitch Mead and Simpleton and Cityfolk

Craig Wedren Releases New Album “Wand”

Posted on:

Craig Wedren is a man that wears many hats. Along with fronting the massively influential DC band Shudder To Think, composing for shows like MTV’s much loved 90s show The State, Reno 911!, Stella, The Whitest Kids You Know, and Wet Hot American Summer, the musician also currently scores the TV show Hung on HBO. Who would think he would even have time to eat or sleep?

But apparently he does… and then some. Wedren has just released his newest solo album, Wand, out now. He has also accompanied the album with his second 360 degree interactive video, available for your viewing pleasure on his website.

Wand is currently streaming on his Facebook as well as on Itunes. –Amanda D.

Ellis Ashbrook — Church Sept. 30, 2011

Posted on:

There was a time, largely consigned to memory now, when lead guitar players were not like the rest of us. They were gods; long-haired supermen who strode over the sod with giant platform shoes, despoiling women and melting faces with equal impunity. Thunder crashed in their wake and lightning burst forth from their guitars. The plucking of but a few mere notes by an experienced lead guitarist was enough to summon beasts to defy description, demons from the very banks of the River Styx, and, in some cases, The Devil himself.

In recent times, the role of the lead guitarist has dwindled in much of popular music. Pot-luck dinners and intimate evenings have taken the place of conquest and pillage, and a typical axeman these days is undoubtedly more comfortable ordering a cup of organic fair-trade coffee than shredding for the future of mankind, atop a snow-covered mountain peak somewhere deep in the former Soviet Union. It’s deplorable.

That’s where Ellis Ashbrook comes into the fold…

Saint Motel Unveil ‘Puzzle Pieces’ Video

Posted on:

This past week, Saint Motel popped back into the lime light by presenting their new music video for their song, ‘Puzzle Pieces”, on MTVU. From the minds of film students/musicians, AJ Jackson, Aaron Sharpe, Greg Erwin, and Dak comes a video that thinks outside the box. Already receiving much buzz from the song itself, and being featured on E! Hollywood News, in Nylon Magazine, and the Top 10 Videos of the Week on Consequence of Sound, it’s only the beginning of a good start for Saint Motel. What really defines the video is how it was shot. Frontman and director, AJ Jackson, decided to deliver the video with a new spin, having it filmed from the point of view of himself. Giving off a ‘Being John Malcovich perspective, the audience travels with AJ through parties, makeout sessions, and even getting a little sick in the gills. Supported by the beautiful madness of the songs’ melodies and lyrics, the video for ‘Puzzle Pieces’ only helps further the rumors that Saint Motel is a must see act. – Mary Boradbent

Q&A with the deli’s Artist of the Month: Baby Barnyard

Posted on:

deli: How did Baby Barnyard start?

Baby Barnyard: I started this project almost exactly a year ago (it’s a solo project) and I guess I really started it out of a sense of frustration with the music projects I was working with at the time. I played the flute for several years with two different bands (Trials and Tribulations and World’s Greatest Dad) and while I loved playing with both bands, they weren’t really creative outlets for me because I had very little involvement in the songwriting process, so I started writing songs on my own. I think I just needed the space and privacy to prove to myself that I could actually do it. .

Steve Shiffman & The Land of No release “Nemegt Uul” EP on 11.04 at Cake Shop

Posted on:

After several virtual spins of Steve Shiffman & The Land of No ‘s latest EP "Nemegt Uul," I began to look at the three song work as a continuous story. It was only after I formed this theory that I discovered that "Nemegt Uul" is the second in a series of 3 EPs (each to be released every 3 months) which will be later compiled into a full length album. So, albeit shaky, my postulation held a little water. The three songs are tied together by recurring themes of lost and found love, dream vs. reality, communication failure, and dressed by the band’s intense guitar sound, rooted in the indie sound of the 90s, and Mr Shiffman’s vocals, which are at times reminiscent of an angrier Brendan Benson. Don’t miss the EP release party at Cake Shop on November 4. – Allison Levin

Cookie Rabinowitz Live w/Mr. Green at The Fire Oct. 25

Posted on:

The music of Cookie Rabinowitz puts a smile on my face. I remember checking out Philly AIDS Thrift at the re-grand opening in their new space (which is rad so check it out), and I think that the DJ slipped “R & R Karaoke” (below) into his set, and it simply made me feel good inside. Now, I wish that Cookie Rabinowitz would start churning out episodes of their animated series again. That shit is hilarious, and it’s been waaaaay too long since they’ve posted a new one! Well, until they do, you can swing by The Fire tonight, and catch them live with local hip hop producer Mr. Green opening for Mia & the Johnson. It’s been awhile since you’ve probably heard from Mia Johnson who used to be a staple in the singer-songwriter scene in Philly, but it seems like she’s back and misses the stage. (Hopefully she still performs “Sailor”.) The Fire, 412 W. Girard Ave., 9pm, $5, 21+ – Q.D. Tran

NYC Artists on the rise: Lisa Jaeggi

Posted on:

We are so impressed with Lisa Jaeggi. While watching her new video projected at our CMJ show at The Delancey on Saturday (thanks InDmusic peeps for picking it!) we realized what an amazing progress this singer songwriter has made in the few years we’ve been familiar with her music: in her new album "Epic Epic" the songwriting, production, vocal delivery, and even attitude reached a whole new level of confidence and maturity, and also "decorative" (but important) elements like this new video, the press shots, and the album’s cover art are beautiful and compelling. Her songs "Whether He Knows" and "The Difference Between" (listen to them on her Facebook page), and "All the Good" – in the embedded video – showcase a budding artist with the potential to warm many hearts with her thoughtful, melancholic rootsy pop that deals with narratives splashed with religious and political observations to carefully constructed thoughts about city life.

Some of our most favorite southern rock ‘n’ rollers out of Murfreesboro, Glossary, release their seventh full-length today via Last Chance Records and This Is American Music. Titled Long Live All of Us, it’s an upbeat little southern rock record, dolled up with lots of keys and pedal steel. And it kicks ass. Stay tuned for a review, and below, check out bassist Bingham Barnes in one of several trailers for the record. Watch out for Nashville showdates at Mercy Lounge Nov. 18 and 19.

Lights Resolve celebrates debut album release party at Music Hall of W’Burg on 10.26

Posted on:

On their long-awaited, full-length record, “Feel You’re Different,” Lights Resolve delve deeper into the dark side of rock. Following a different path from their previous three well-received EP’s, the Long Island-based trio delivers 11 powerful, fully produced and great sounding tracks. Previously released “Another Five Days” receives a sonic makeover, assimilating the grittier edge and intricate layering of the newer material. A series of heavy, fervent tracks, including the impassioned single, “Sew It Up,” pounding “Happens Every Day”, distortion-ridden “HIPS,” frenetic “Stick Em Up,” and explosive “With the Pieces,” culminate in the enraged “Misfire.” Even dancy “Hurt a Little” and melodic “My Gemini” do not escape the emotional wrath that pervades the album. Each track reaffirms Lights Resolve’s surging trajectory, as they maintain their musical notoriety . “Feel You’re Different” officially drops today, and Lights Resolve celebrate the release with The Canon Logic, Night Fevers, and Electric Sun on 10.26 at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. –Meijin Bruttomesso
