A recent study reveals an astonishing link between music and neuroscience. To put it simply, over time, musical training improves one’s cognitive abilities such as learning, language and memory. Perhaps that’s why it was so easy for Jazz vocalist, trombonist, and songwriter, elizabeth!, to delve into music after studying neuroscience at Harvard. Newly based in Vermont, Los Angeles, she is ready to share her one-of-a-kind jazzy pop tunes via her debut album, Brainchildren, on Nov 1st. The album was recorded in Brooklyn, NY in one day, featuring other gifted musicians who have worked with Beyonce, Bjork, Beirut and many others. elizabeth! will tour the East and West coast in support of the release beginning this fall. – Nicole Dawley

When one thinks of the typical sound of DC, chamber pop probably isn’t amongst the first genres to come to mind, but with the talent exuding from DC’s own Star FK Radium, perhaps that may change. And considering they rose to the top of our recent band of the month poll, they clearly have a fanbase that may just put chamber pop up there with go-go and straightedge someday…who knows! So we got a hold of Bill (guitar), Matt (drums), and Alissa (violin) to delve more into the world of classical punk. Here, they talk about cool dads, their European audience, and gracing the pages of several metal magazines. Now onto the interview…

Drunken Sufis recently released "Death Cult Summer Camp," a 17-song collection of manic, sharply satirical bursts of "conspiracy prog-punk." The band recently played for Panopticon360, a new webseries featuring bands playing in recording studios or live shows and filmed with panoramic, 360 degree cameras. The first season of the show also features DD/MM/YYYY, Tombs, Pterodactyl, Zs, La Otracina, Endless Boogie, Home Video and Weird Owl. Philly hip hop is blowing up the internet this week with official releases by Reef The Lost Cauze and Jedi Mind Tricks yesterday and the new Lushlife mixtape on Monday. Well, Freeway also just dropped a new mixtape entitled The Intermission. It will help keep Team Early entertained until his upcoming official studio album Diamond in the Ruff finally sees the light of day. You’ll find contributions from Meek Mill, Freddie Gibbs, Wale, Mayer Hawthorne, and many others on his latest mixtape, which you can stream and download HERE.

Instrumental music admittedly is not ranking very high in our listening preferences, but after a week like the last one (yes, we overbooked ourselves for CMJ…) we find this ultra-sparse record by Brooklyn audiovisual performance duo Louise Zagar pretty much the only thing we can possibly listen to. These sometimes sweet and sometimes tense litanies of strings and exotic percussions remind us that life is not a rock show, and allow our brains to pause for a minute, and enjoy the (almost) silence. Childhood friends Alex Markovitz and Jason Oller will be taking the stage at The Fire tonight along with learned drummer Carl Bahner under the moniker The Day Life. One can’t help noticing the heavy influence of The Beatles on the outfit right down to their band name, but for a young group that is able to craft such pretty pop tunes, it’s a nice homage to their heroes. Their latest EP Pick Me Up was produced by local Grammy Award winner Scot Sax at The Studio. The Day Life will be joined this evening by The Tressels (who recently released their new EP American Sunset which you can download for free HERE), Everyone Everywhere, The Sea Around Us, and Oregon’s Archeology.
