Fledgling local rockers Wigwams have more to celebrate than just Halloween tonight (even though it is the best holiday). The four-piece made up of Daniel Morse (guitar & vocals), Jason Strohl (bass), Brian Sullivan (guitar & vocals), and Phil Sutton (drums) just dropped their debut EP International today (which you can download for free HERE). Wigwams will be stepping up to the big stage this evening when they open for Battles at the TLA so it might be a good time to smear on that war paint and throw on that Native American costume to help them celebrate their new release in style. Pattern Is Movement Get Mischievous at KFN Oct. 30
Pattern Is Movement will be coming out of hibernation for the first time since September 2010 tonight to set Mischief Night off for fellow local acts Hermit Thrushes and Banned Books at Kung Fu Necktie. Chris Ward and Andrew Thiboldeaux have been hard at work creating the follow-up to 2008’s All Together. The duo finished mixing the new album in mid-June, but was unsatisfied with the mixes so they are currently working on re-tracking the bass parts so hopefully the album will see the light of day really soon. Be sure to head down to KFN to hear some new Pattern Is Movement tracks and maybe some of their sweet neo-soul covers like D’Angelo’s “Untitled” or Beyonce’s “Crazy In Love”. Kung Fu Necktie,1250 N. Schoolly D Performing for Occupy Philly at City Hall Oct. 29
Local hip hop legend and O.G., Schoolly D, will be at ground zero of Occupy Philly this afternoon for “a special message-driven musical performance.” He’ll be joined by “raptivist” Michael “O.G.-Law” Tabon, his wife Gwen “Phila-Diva” Tabon (who is best known for her vocals on Dr. Dre’s “Keep Their Heads Ringing”), and their 4-year-old son known as “lower case g.law.” The event is being presented by N.A. Poe’s “The Panic Hour” radio show and Occupy Philadelphia Media. Their objective is to showcase “the voice hip hop provides to a community often underrepresented or also now known as…‘the 99%’” by “featuring representation of the past, present, and future of the hip hop counter culture.” So fans of hip hop – grab your rain gear and head down to City Hall to show your support! City Hall, Broad & Market Streets (On the West Side of Market St.), 4pm – 6pm, Free, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman
2 Hearts and Chemicals sign to XD Records, release Coming Home EP on November 11
One of the remarkable assets of electronic music is that it is malleable, capable of taking different shapes and forms without any limitations. The creative minds behind 2 Hearts & Chemicals concoct this formula from opposite poles: after forming a kinship as adolescents in Pennsylvania, the duo comprised of Eli Lhymn and Stephen Biebel now reside in New York City and Los Angeles, but that doesn’t impede them to separate themselves from their connective thread: music. Their upcoming EP, titled "Coming Home", stems from a subconscious level, in which a series of opulently arranged synth-pop landscapes conduct its listeners through a kaleidoscope of colorful sounds with a notable level of artistic clarity rarely seen in new acts. They’ve just been signed with experimental-leaning label XD Records, which will release Coming Home on November 11th.
Jonwayne’s second release on Alpha Pup Records
Jonwayne has quickly become a familiar face at Low End Theory with his mix of sharp tones and flashbacks to Nintendo games. This week, the beatmaker is celebrating the release of his newest EP, titled "The Death of Andrew." While the music is not as morose as one would expect for such a title, songs like "Pillars of Sand" and Immobile" do contain some dramatic instrumentation and heavy beats. Jonwayne has a tendency to introduce transitions that catch listeners off guard. A major one occurs on "King," which starts as a stripped-down track, but then is joined by a razor-edged organ sound. The effect on this track creates a vivid image of a sinister underworld. However, other tracks are more game-like with airy melodies. Taking into account that Jonwayne was a spoken word artist before becoming a beatmaker, he brings a fitting light to his command on flow. – Karla Hernández
Something in the Water
Something in the Water is a micro-documentary focused on the Seattle music scene and its continual abundance of innovative and talented artists. Directed by Ward Serrill, the short served as an accompaniment to Pearl Jam Twenty, the Cameron Crowe directed documentary, which aired on PBS last Friday. While mainly focused on the indie pop side of the Seattle scene, the doc touched on some of the biggest acts in the city, including clips of Pickwick, Shabazz Palaces, The Head and the Heart, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, and Total Experience Gospel Choir. Also featured are KEXP DJs John Richards, Kevin Cole, and Cherly Waters, as well as Megan Jasper and Jonathan Poneman of Sub Pop Records. Watch the 13 minute video below via KCTS.

Pianos Become the Teeth New Album Out 11/1
"Topshelf Records will release the new record from Baltimore, MD rock band Pianos Become The Teeth on November 1st. Titled The Lack Long After, the album was recorded by Kevin Bernsten at Developing Nations Studio, where the band’s previous effort Old Pride was recorded.
Pianos Become The Teeth has a melodic yet uncompromising sound that brings to mind such diverse and influential bands as Thursday, Envy and City of Caterpillar. Brimming with sincerity and brandishing an experimental ambiance, the band is pushing beyond the boundaries of a stale genre. Mixing elements of screamo, hardcore as well as post rock, The Lack Long After breathes new life into a once decaying scene." –Courtesy Top Shelf Records
Catch them in the midst of their US tour on Dec. 4 at the Red Palace in DC.
Weekly Feature: Mitten
A refreshing change of pace from some of CMJ’s more brawny, electro collectives, Mitten’s more elegant style has been compared to Au Revoir Simone and The Postal Service, who the band themselves cite as a major influence. Their arrangements are neat and chic, with programmed beats, pretty melodies, sweet vocals, twisted guitar licks and various other toys and treats rounding out their sound. Singer Maia Macdonald and producer Joanna Katcher formed under the Mitten moniker in 2009, beginning a process of songwriting via email that led to their debut EP "See You Bye" earlier this year. With all six tracks on that release so fully realized, it’s hard to believe Mitten are a band still very much making their way in the indie world. But chatting to both members, it’s clear they can’t hide their wide-eyed excitement about their fledgling career. – Read Dean Van Nguyen’s interview with the band here.
Weekly Features: Ursa Minor
Sometimes there’s nothing better than a band that can fill you with energetic, upbeat music that you can’t help but move to, and that’s exactly what Ursa Minor provides. Fronted by power vocalist Michelle Casillas and rounded out with a rock star band consisting of Tony Scherr, Rob Jost and Robert DiPietro, the music of Ursa Minor is full of catchy riffs, bold pop rock vocals, and good-fashioned attitude to fill your inner rock n’roll spirit. Their most recent album, “Showface” hit the market running, feeding their fans with new music that was a long-awaited follow up to their 2003 debut. With a healthy mix of sultry, sharp melodies and consistently strong rhythms, Ursa Minor is quickly climbing the ranks as a mainstay band in the indie pop rock scene. – Read Christina Morelli’s Q&A with the band here.
