Gothic Tropic shines warm grooves to autumnal days

Posted on:

At first glance, At first glance, Gothic Tropic has all the earmarks of California natives Abe Vigoda and Fool’s Gold with their jolty rhythm section and pop-infused compositions. The Echo Park trio, whose ironically penned name brings to mind a mascara-drenched Siouxsie look-alike riding the 720 towards Santa Monica on a scorching summer, is actually less frenetic than their peers, with piercing guitar lines and across the fretboard taps fluttering at a steadier pace. Cecilia Della Peruti’s reverbed vocals (of Rumspringa fame) give an added numinous quality to the band, whose recent EP, Awesome Problems, breezes by with casual allure and a touch of quirky experimental grooves. Gothic Tropic only has one planned gig, which will place at the Silverlake Lounge on November 3rd.

Perpetual Ritual: Prayers to Invoke You

Posted on:

Under the moniker Perpetual Ritual, Mitchell Saulsberry sings fragile pop songs that come across as both honest and reserved.  Standout track,  “Prayers to Invoke You,” features jangling acoustic guitars that evoke the Kinks and Peter Sarstedt and sparse, yet frantic percussion.  The vocals are well in front of the music, but still distant and reverb laced.  The blown out production should come as no surprise given that Saulsberry plays bass in fellow Seattle lo-fi outfit Grave Babies.  The two bands just toured together, including a Brooklyn date opening for Ganglians and Xray Eyeballs. Saulsberry has posted quite a few tracks on his SoundCloud site. I think the most interesting are among the newest, hopefully this is a sign of more to come.

Farewell Ponytail…

Posted on:

A delayed farewell to Baltimore’s Ponytail. ***"We regret to inform you that the wonder group known as Ponytail have officially called it a day. After releasing their amazing album "Do Whatever You Want All the Time" they were unable to make the touring portion come to life as the members have dispersed across the country in search of other life experiences. It’s a bummer the world will never see Ponytail live again because it was truly honest music that filled you with extreme joy. An experience like that is rare these days and if you did see Ponytail live consider yourself lucky. Hopefully more bands will come along like Ponytail and shed light on the fakers. Much love to the future." Xoxo. Sir james winnie***

Photo Recap: rjd2, Icebird & Lushlife at Union Transfer

Posted on:

“Nutsack symphonies” and soulful sounds defined Friday night at Union Transfer as Icebird, the new project from rjd2 and Aaron Livingston, celebrated its release of The Abandoned Lullaby right before rjd2 returned to the moveable stage to woo the crowd with his intergalactic garb and a hammer bearing Mario hand puppet. Lushlife opened the night with a dose of electro-hop, which contained raw beats over electrical sounds, rather than sampled bass-y thumps. Icebird unveiled to the masses a funky, groovy vibe transmitting much emotion via Aaron Livingston’s facial expressions which mirrored his intense vocals. rjd2 wrapped up the evening with a mini marathon workout utilizing all of his turntables and knobs before bringing Icebird back out to close with an encore, covering “Motivation” by Kelly Rowlands. You can check out our pics from the dancetastic evening HERE. (Photo by Brandi Lukas)

Follow Void Vision into the Abyss at Little Bar Oct. 15

Posted on:

Promising to “dance with the devil by the pale moonlight” tonight at the Little Bar, the minimalist synth-pop/Cold Wave project Void Vision’s eerie futuristic sounds may actually harken old Beelzebub to venture into South Philly’s newest little music hotspot. Once spooky dance partners with Hayden Payne, Shari Vari (a.k.a. Shari Volin) has now journeyed off alone into the abyss of the music world. But this evening she’ll be sharing the newly built Little Bar stage with fellow Brooklyn Cold Wavers Dream Affairs and NYC Kraut-punkers The Men. Ha…expect to see plenty of people dressed in black kind of dancing. Little Bar, 738 S. 8th St., 8pm, $6, 21+ (Photo by Zinc Inc.) – Alexis V.

Weird Hot Opening for Slo-Mo Feat. Mic Wrecka at JB’s Oct. 15

Posted on:

Weird Hot, the new project of Shawn Kilroy, is a surreal and romantic art-rock experience. His debut under the current moniker is at times dreamy, psychedelic folk, and other times slow-burning rock such as “Metal Demon” which sounds like Neil Young backed by Tran Siberian orchestra. The album is concise but explores a multitude of different genres. And those guitar solos! They are playing tonight at Johnny Brenda’s opening up for Philly’s most unlikely successful musical duo in Slo-Mo and Mic Wrecka. Led by Mike “Slo-Mo” Brenner on slide guitar and vox and featuring Mic Wrecka, these dudes got popular with “My Buzz Comes Back” that song you heard a billion times when it was released. Come check it all out and bring an extra face, because I expect some seriously face-melting guitar solos tonight. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $10, 21+ – Adam G.

Bloktoberfest 2011!

Posted on:

If you attended last year’s Bloktoberfest, you may have found yourself giving it pet names like LongLinetoberfest or OutOfBeerfest. Well, this year it appears that the neighborhood event has learned from its past mistakes, and picked up some essential sponsors to ensure that the same scenario wouldn’t be happening again. Thanks to The South of South Neighborhood Association the festival will be stretched out from Broad to 17th Street on South Street and businesses like Tritone, Pumpkin Market, Jamaican Jerk Hut, and more will be onto the festivities. And extra special thanks to Bella Vista Distributors for ensuring that running out of beer this year will be a HUGE impossibility. The music lineup this year has also been amped up with The Walkmen highlighting the event performing a very rare FREE outdoor set. You’ll also find more up-and-coming Philly acts like Toy Soldiers, Kuf Knotz, Cheers Elephant, Cozy Galaxies, and many more. Remember all beer proceeds benefit a variety of important education initiatives tied to the area’s schools and students so drink up! Cheers! Bloktoberfest, On South St. from Broad St. to 17th St., 12pm – 8pm, FREE, All Ages – Bill McThrill
