Shaking Through w/ Creepoid

Posted on:

The new Shaking Through episode features one of our favorite bands Creepoid as well as some awesome folks who add so much to the Philly music scene! The project was curated by R5’s Sean Agnew. Kyle “Slick” Johnson (Wavves, Cymbals Eat Guitars, Rogue Wave, etc.) also was the guest producer, and provided his usual brand of comic relief. You can check out some video footage from the session and the fruits of their labor “Old Tree,” which is also available for free download, below. Enjoy!

DJ ?uestlove Opening for Little Dragon & Tycho at Union Transfer Oct. 18

Posted on:

?uestlove was recently added to tonight’s already fantabulous lineup at Union Transfer. Now, I shouldn’t have to really convince anyone who lives in Philly why you should come out this evening and give our fine froed friend a little local love. But I would like to take the opportunity to give some to Sweden’s Little Dragon. I did happen to catch ?uesto raving about them on Twitter when they debuted on Fallon so I checked them out, and they lived up to the hype. It was such a mesmerizing performance that it actually made me come early to The Roots Picnic to catch their set at 1:30pm, which is definitely a big deal when I need to stick around for nine or ten hours drinking seven dollar beers to see the final acts, Man Man and Nas. (BTW: Live Nation, I know that you probably don’t care, but pssst…press folks will definitely have nicer things to say about your events if you allow them re-entry. Just glad that I was able to sneak in my trusty little Jameson bottle to help pass the time. :o) San Francisco sound artist Tycho (a.k.a. Scott Hansen) should provide plenty of swirling soundscapes to help warm you up for this evening’s imported headliner. Union Transfer, 1024 Spring Garden St., 8pm, $15 -$17, All Ages – Q.D. Tran

The Hundred Days New Video, Tour With Art Vs. Science

Posted on:

Talk about a concept album. San Francisco’s indie pop “it” kids The Hundred Days recorded their debut album Really? in just a hundred days and nights. The album, released earlier this fall, blends the band’s love of moody alternative and catchy pop (think The Cure meets Franz Ferdinand); its newest single “Girl At A Party,” the follow up to the unavoidable catchy “Sex U” is another foray into fun, dance music with a signature and melodious sound.

After hitting the festival circuit hard at SXSW, Noise Pop Festival and the BFD festival over the past year, the band has just announced a string of tour dates with Sydney’s Art Vs. Science, including a date on November 4 at SF’s DNA Lounge. Check out the new video for “Girl At A Party” here.

Fire & Spice — All Asia Oct. 7, 2011

Posted on:

At first glance, the 11-and-12-year old musicians that comprise Fire & Spice may incite one to think of names like Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus. Think again.

The only thing this hard-rocking foursome from Haverhill has in common with the aforementioned pair of pop starlets is that they were all born in the 1990’s. The lads and lasses from Fire & Spice, when asked to share some of their influences, rattled off names like Rush, Slipknot, Rob Zombie and Kiss, surely more substantial fare than that consumed by the likes of Hannah and The Biebs, one should think.

In any event, these kids certainly don’t act their ages when on stage, and display a level of confidence rarely glimpsed in such youthful performers.

On October 7, the precocious young rockers made their Cambridge debut, playing an extended set at the All Asia (yes, really), and we were there, like the proverbial fly on the wall, to observe the proceedings.

New Track: “Make My” (Feat. Big K.R.I.T.) – The Roots

Posted on:

As promised, The Roots just “leaked” the first single from their upcoming album undun called “Make My,” which features Big K.R.I.T. The LP is scheduled to drop December 6 via Island Def Jam. It’s the band’s first conceptually-based album as explained in their press release.

undun is an existential re-telling of the short life of one Redford Stephens (1974-1999). Through the use of emotives and Redford’s internal dialogues the album seeks to illustrate the intersection of free will and prescribed destiny as it plays out ‘on the corner’. Utilizing a reverse narrative arc, the album begins as the listener finds Redford disoriented-postmortem – and attempting to make sense of his former life. As he moves through its pivotal moments he begins to deconstruct all that has led to his (and our own) coming undun.

You can check out “Make My” below as well as the rest of the album’s track list.

Where Is My Mind?: Icebird’s rjd2 & Aaron Livingston

Posted on:

Icebird is the new project from rjd2 (a.k.a. Ramble John “RJ” Krohn) and Aaron Livingston (The Mean). They just released their debut full-length album The Abandoned Lullaby last week and wrapped up a mini-tour as a five-piece band in support of it with RJ pulling double duty opening and headlining. Icebird is also running a remix competition for their latest single “Charmed Life,” where you can win some neat prizes. (You can check out the deets for the contest HERE which ends at 11:59pm on October 31.) The friendly duo was nice enough to meet with us before their debut Philly performance this past Friday at Union Transfer. It was a fun interview where we found out some things that you probably didn’t know about the tandem like oddly what you might find RJ doing to unwind after a show or what song Aaron’s mom slapped the shit out of him for singing when he was little or even knowledge for your next trivial pursuit game like what chaff is. You can learn about all that and more in our interview with Icebird HERE.
