So, SoundLand is officially here (as of yesterday), and needless to say, we’re pumped about it. In years past, we’ve had a lot of fun at Next Big Nashville – sometimes a little too much fun – and we’re ready to get it on again. There’s an array of talent lined up for the rest of the week and through Saturday, both local and otherwise. Stay tuned for reviews from The Deli, and get your schedule together if you haven’t yet.

The movement commonly known as "Trip Hop" produced some of the best records of the 90s, but it never managed to produce new artists whose output kept up with the outstanding quality of those early records. Fronted by soulful singer Jolanda Porter, NYC band Wishes and Thieves create music which follows on the steps of the genre’s fathers and mothers, with a slightly more alt-pop approach, and have been compared to the likes of Portishead and Sneaker Pimps for their edgy, electronic female vocal-driven sound. The band released their debut EP, "Lighthouse" this summer and will be releasing their second EP this fall. You can see them live at Rockwood Music Hall on 09.30.
Strand of Oaks recently recorded two covers for the third installment of Aquarium Drunkard’s The Lagniappe Sessions which invites some of the blog’s “favorite artists to cut exclusive covers paying tribute to some of their favorite artists.” You can download Oaks performing beautiful renditions of “Tea Song” by Michael Hurley and “When It’s Cold I’d Like to Die” by Moby HERE.
Party punk rockers Japanther will hit the stage at The Bowery Electric on Monday September 26th. The group has made a name for themselves by being truly incredible performance artists. They’ve performed in bedrooms, on street corners, on moving trucks, and on top of bridges. They’ve played alongside synchronized swimmers and giant puppets. Most of all, they play an exciting brand of loud punk rock and love to blur the line between performer and audience. They’ll be supported by DJ Dirty Fingers. Visit The Bowery Electric‘s website for more details.
Below is a new music video for Psychic Teens’ “Dose” that landed in our mailbox yesterday. The track will appear on their debut LP TEEN which is being released by Golden Voyage Records in late October. The aesthetically retro-looking no wave video will be part of a forthcoming VHS release for Video/Horror/Show. Psychic Teens will be performing on Tuesday, September 27 at Kung Fu Necktie with Drag City’s Cave and L.U.N.A.R. Revolt. Enjoy (or be afraid)!
The sophomore run of the Philly F/M Festival kicks off this year with a hip hop showcase at 2424 Studios’ Skybox tonight. For six years running, Philadelphia Slick has been thrilling crowds with their impressive live performances. Last year’s opus Everything’s Game featured supercharged tracks like “Daily Dose”and “Everything Must Go”. They plan on unveiling a massive Kickstarter campaign once their Spit Pro Quo Tour comes to an end so it looks like the band is showing no signs of slowing down. In a short amount of time MH the Verb has managed to gain an ample amount of praise from the likes of The Roots and Kid Cudi. And now that the flourishing MC/Producer is backed by an all-star live band and a new album on the horizon, he’s shaping up to be another artist on the rise in the Philly music scene. The Skybox at 2424 Studios, 2424 E. York St., 7pm, $10 (includes a free beer for 21+), All Ages – Bill McThrill
Thirty-odd musicians. An array of instruments. One definitive sound. The Minor Mishap Marching Band notably grabs avant-garde styling by the brass, punctuating it with vivid percussion and whimsical woodwinds. On Saturday, September 24th, Mishap will be releasing their debut album Minor Mishap at Antone’s along with “Atarilectrorock” band Pong. Mishap performed at the first annual Honk! TX street band festival held in March, proving that their bark really is as big as their bite. They push the envelope of street performers, holding a gypsy-Brechtian sway in their steps and the sound and coordination of a big band that would make Lalo Schifrin proud. Tickets to the CD release party are $10.00, which is a small price to pay for the theatrical sounds and entertainment that The Minor Mishap Marching Band has in store. Be there early for doors at 9:30 PM, grab a drink and a prime location, and watch Mishap’s magical chaos unravel before your eyes starting at 10:00 PM!
