High Pop’s “Hippie Speed Ball” Available to Stream on CMJ

Posted on:

High Pop‘s new album, Hippie Speed Ball, is available to stream on CMJ. High Pop is Sean Posila and Jordan Caulfield. They muster up fuzzy garage pop, written for the very dregs of youth culture which they sprout from. All their songs are written and recorded in their basement. At any given time, you can find them somewhere between Boston and New York, loosely attending universities. Their songs are fast and short, but their music is forever. It’s kind of like the Beach Boys on crack.

Fay Wolf Makes Aching Sound So Beautiful on Full Length Debut “Spiders”

Posted on:

Fay Wolf describes her live performances as “sadsongfunnyjokemusictimes.” Now, don’t run and grab your Webster Dictionary just yet. The Connecticut born-Los Angeles based singer/songwriter and pianist simply makes songs that are alluring yet gloomy; funny yet sappy–similar to Ani Difranco, Joni Mitchell and Tori Amos. Her second album, “Spiders,” produced by Billy Mohler (Macy Gray, Lenka, War Tapes) and Joshua Ostrander (Eastern Conference Champions, Kav, Voxhaul Broadcast), which will be released independently on November 8th, is an 11-track album that displays her unabashed honesty, dark humor and wit that her fans have come to know and love.

Wolf is not only a crooner, composer and ivory-tickler, she is a classically-trained actress who has made appearances on primetime television shows such as Law & Order, Numb3rs, Bones, Ghost Whisperer and NCIS: Los Angeles. Her songs have even been featured on Grey’s Anatomy, One Tree Hill, Covert Affairs, and Pretty Little Liars.

Weekly Feature: Caveman plays Deli CMJ show at Pianos, 10.20

Posted on:

On a residential block of East Third Street, there’s a small yellow guitar that marks the entrance to Cobra Guitars. This inconspicuous dwelling serves as the workshop of Caveman guitarist Jimmy Carbonetti and the band’s unofficial clubhouse. Down the cement stairs and through the unmarked door, visitors will first encounter Carbonetti’s handcrafted guitars hung carefully on the wall, tangles of wires, amps, stacks of vinyl, a vintage-styled couch and a laptop set up in the corner a working musician’s paradise. In the back, there’s an assortment of guitar parts strewn about that will be used to build a dream instrument. Whether it’s Carbonetti, keyboardist Sam Hopkins and guitar technician Mas Hino working on guitars or a rotating cast of peers dropping in to hang out or jam, the basement space in the East Village is always humming with activity. – Read the rest of Nancy Chow’s feature on Caveman here. – Caveman will play The Deli’s CMJ show at Pianos on Thursday 10.20.

Is there such a thing as too much to do? Yes, and this weekend epitomizes it. If you can’t find anything to do this weekend, then you really aren’t trying very hard, and should probably stay in anyways because you might be more of a buzzkill than this weather. Everyone else – check out the list below, pick something or things, and go there! Sorry, all this rain is really fuckin’ harshing our mellow, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t going to try and drink until our bodies are numb and things seem fun. You should too. In the Indiestry: POPPED! Festival’s Alexis Rosenweig

Posted on:

POPPED! Festival will be returning to Philly once again today. The little festival that could has faced plenty of obstacles over its short lifespan, and this year has proven to be no different with the recent announcement of it being moved from FDR Park to Temple’s Liacouras Center because of the predicted bad weather. But like every other year, POPPED! President, Alexis Rosenweig continues to roll with the punches. We had a quick chat on the phone with Rosenweig last weekend before all this chaos hit the festival, and honestly, it was a little longer than what we’ve posted, but some of the questions and answers really didn’t seem relevant anymore with the development of recent circumstances. You can check out how the rest of the interview went HERE.

Weekly Feature: The Hollows play CMJ at Hiro Ballroom on 10.22

Posted on:

The Hollows are a 5-piece band from Brooklyn who specialize in the multi-part harmony, instrument-swapping, kitchen sink approach to roots rock – they sometime call it "rootsabilly". Formed in 2009, the group has developed a solid local following, mostly because of their energetic live shows, which despite lacking a drummer keep the audience’s toes tapping nonstop. The band recently released their debut album "Belong to the Land" and will participate to this year’s CMJ Music Marathon with a show at Hiro Ballroom on Saturday October 22. – Read Ben Krieger Q&A with the band here.

Weathervane Music Showcase at World Café Live Sept. 23

Posted on:

Weathervane Music is hosting a showcase this evening at World Café Live. Brian McTear has brought together some fine acts that have graced his Miner Street studio. It will feature local folk hero Hezekiah Jones (a.k.a. Raph Cutrufello), who will be joined by his merry musical family of Joneses, and Brooklyn songbird via Jersey via Tennessee via Jersey Sharon Van Etten, a Deli NYC favorite who recently signed to Jagjaguwar and has been captivating the music world with her effortlessly mellifluous vocals and beautifully polished songwriting. Both are Shaking Through alumni. Folk pop princess Marissa Nadler (McTear produced her latest eponymous fifth full-length album) will also be joining them. The showcase is part of the Philly F/M Fest, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit Weathervane Music. World Café Live, 3025 Walnut St., 8pm, $19 – $24, All Ages – H.M. Kauffman

From The Deli’s NYC Open Blog: Kerri & Bill

Posted on:

Kerri & Bill met in a basement in Bushwick last winter. They were wearing leather jackets and boots. Both respected songwriters in their own right, they teamed up to record a 5 song EP called "Down" which will be released later this month. The simple two guitar arrangement (with a little banjo for good measure) and harmonies are reminiscent of the Gillian Welch/Dave Rawlings pairing. This duo, however, walks a line closer to the L train than the Fireball Mail. Kerri’s strong, sometimes gravelly vocals are matched only by Bill’s expressive, dirty guitar. The duo plays Pine Box Rock Shop Saturday the 24th at 9pm and Rockwood Music Hall on Sunday the 25th at 7pm. – (as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here). Photo Recap: Union Transfer Grand Opening w/Clap Your Hand Say Yeah & Policia

Posted on:

There was certainly a buzz in the air and the interweb on Wednesday. The Clap Your Hand Say Yeah show was sold out at Union Transfer for the release of their first album in four years, but the vibe at the new R5, Bowery Presents, and 4CM venue was that the majority of the people were actually more interested to see what had become of the old Spaghetti Warehouse than who was performing that evening. There were plenty of friends, artists, fans, and in the indiestry folks roaming the spacious place who were there to congratulate local area DIY punk kid done good Sean Agnew, who had been vacuuming the place up until the doors opened, as well as corporate music big wigs checking out the competition. But UT was full of smiles and friendly faces ready to drink and hear how Clap Your Hand Say Yeah and opener Policia sounded through its new killer sound system. You can take a look at our photos of the momentous occasion HERE.
