Tan Vampires — For Physical Fitness

Posted on:

New Hampshire’s Tan Vampires is a six-piece rock band that released their first LP last week. It is called For Physical Fitness, and it makes me sleepy.

With a couple of dramatic exceptions (Sweep Up the Pieces; Customer Satisfaction Survey), the album is comprised of subdued, slow-burning rock.  On the top end there’s occasional, just-there lines of keyboard, marimba, or organ that lilt throughout the songs, but those bits are rarely up-front enough to make Tan Vamps into a band that one would associate more with keys than guitars. The guitar sound itself ranges widely: from slowly crunching distortion, to plucky acoustic folk, to spare, icy twangs. It’s really notable that they are able to cover so much musical ground with their guitars while also rarely deviating from their very distinctive mellow vibe. The band has obviously spent a lot of time considering the finer points of their production and honing their sound.

Lead singer Jake Mehrmann has a plaintive and clear voice that is an excellent match for the wistful, autumnal songs that predominate the album. Thanks to the often-subdued instrumentation, it is he that most often steals the show in the songs, sometimes taking on melodies with little instrumental assistance behind him, the rest of the band plugging along with their spare, rhythmic playing, and his voice flying away on the back of his heavy, intense lyrics.

There’s a little something for everyone here, be they folk fans, Modest Mouse fans, Death Cab fans, or anyone who’s feeling a little moody. It’s the kind of music that feels like a hug, but doesn’t get boring after a few songs.

Laura Gibson signs to Barsuk

Posted on:

Portland darling Laura Gibson has signed to Barsuk Records. Currently over the pond touring the UK, Laura moved from Hush records, which put out her latest work "Beast of Seasons." The Coquille born songstress has played a variety of venues on her way up the Portland music food chain, including AIDS hospices and kindergartens (get them while they’re young, right?). Her soft and loving approach to songs is always gentle and thoughtful and we wish her the best with Barsuk!

Talkdemonic Ruins Your Life

Posted on:

We all have our own wistful ideas about what a Sunday should be; what a Sunday should feel like, smell like, look like, taste like, sound like. For me, this past Sunday felt like sleep, smelled like rain, looked like fall, tasted like German pancake, and sounded like the new Talkdemonic record, Ruins. Now that’s a downright Sunday.

As usual, Kevin O’Connor and Lisa Molinaro, recently signed to Isaac Brock’s Glacial Pace Recordings, deliver us big and loud, lulling and orchestral, strange digital symphonies. And while Ruins has all that, this time around, there’s something else. This time around, their forward-looking symphony rings out like an ageless book of poems.

It’s usually the job of a song to tell us a story. But these songs rehash the seasons, the past decade, Sundays past, a memory gone astray – what it feels like to fall in love and what it means to stay in love. And to me, that’s poetry.

The friendly thing about Talkdemonic, you always know it’s them. You hear that grinding, deeply mewing violin in tandem with the blips and crashes of electronic delight, and you’re emotionally involved. You’re one smitten kitten. But listen for the more this time around, listen for the evocation, the merry meaning. Listen hard. Oh, and do yourself one last favor – see them, for free, the same day Ruins drops, October 4, at Music Millennium.– Morgan Brothers

A unique event dedicated to those who help make Austin the “Live Music Capital of the World,” the annual Health Alliance for Austin Musicians (HAAM) Benefit Day takes place on October 4th.  HAAM has become a well-respected and renowned health insurance company that supplies professional, uninsured musicians with health plans.  HAAM Benefit Day, presented by Whole Foods Market, will promote over 160 bands and artists that will perform at local businesses, stores, and outside stages from 6:00 AM to well into the early morning hours. High Places’ new video: “Altos Lugares”

Posted on:

High Places‘ new video features shots of ant colonies crawling around, translucent people and the trippiest pool party ever to accompany their soaring electronic sounds of single "Altos Lugares." Literall the Spanish translation of the band name, "Altos Lugares" is a droning electronic beat with disembodied voices looping over and over again. It’s repetitive but always changing, pulling the listener into a sort of trance. The single comes off their upcoming album Original Colors out October 11 on Thrill Jockey. The release will include a bonus CD with two extended album songs and an exclusive track. They’ll be busy touring Europe this fall, but hopefully they’ll grace the west coast with their presence soon. In the meantime, enjoy the video and pick up the album next month. – Taylor Lampela

When Particles Collide — Mass to Energy EP

Posted on:

In high school my friends and I used to joke about pioneering the genre “science-rock.” We covered the Bill Nye the Science Guy theme song in our short-lived band, Igneous Rocks! However, I have to tip my hat to the first real science-rock I’ve heard: When Particles Collide, a rock ‘n roll duo from Bangor, Maine consisting of Sasha Alcott and Chris Viner

First equation: punk-rock high school chemistry teacher + long time jazz performer = [the perfect television show (Breaking Bad combined with School of Rock) X Pixies rockability]. With lines such as, “Grams contain avogadro’s number ya heard? That’s 6012 X × 10^23!” I picture myself in the coolest chemistry class of my life. If I had a rock and roll star as my chem teacher in high school I think I would be on my way to a science degree right now.

The duo strays away from science after the first song in their 6-song album and focuses on their obvious rock and roll roots. Listening closely I get vibes from all over the rock spectrum from Rush to the White Stripes to moments that they can call all their own. As a jazz-rooted drummer, Chris is able to add a unique spin of complex, flowing beats to compliment Sasha’s lively and melodic vocals.

Sure to be a great performance to witness (and sure to make you recall all those formulas you forgot since high school) make sure to catch them at a local bar in Bangor. If you won’t be up there any time soon, stream their 6-song EP here.

Recap and Photos: Hoots & Hellmouth Album Release Show at the TLA w/Buried Beds and Frontier Ruckus

Posted on:

Foot stomping, banjo picking, beautiful backup singing, and great story telling via lyrical and instrumental art defined the celebration of Hoots and Hellmouth’s Salt album release show at the Theater of Living Arts.

Opening the night was Michigan rockers Frontier Ruckus with a surprisingly eclectic sound with at the forefront folk vibes paired with Zachary Nichols’s trumpet manipulation, which exuded a flavorful Mexican brass demeanor. Nichols also wooed the crowd with the singing-saw as he stroked an aged handsaw with a fiddlestick. Matthew Milla caressed the guitar as he soothingly sang while David Jones maneuvered the banjo. Milla and Jones ended each song with a chest-to-chest finish.

Philly’s Buried Beds then took the stage and opened its performance with grand, repetitious claps and wooden drumstick clanks into feel good favorite “Breadcrumb Trail”. Serial killer song “Steady Hand” provided a much darker sound than the prior, yet still invited audience participation with its myriad of “whoa-oh’s.” Eliza Jones’ vocals provided a pleasant flow from song-to-song as Hallie Sianni played the role of femme fatale on the fiddle. Later in the performance, Dr. Dog’s Eric Slick joined in on the drumming and had many local friends and fans yelling, “Hi, Eric!” from the crowd.

As Hoots and Hellmouth set up the stage, the crowd chattered in surprise how their were drums for the performance. Upon the band’s entrance, “HOOTS” was incessantly chanted by audience with great anticipation. Hoots and Hellmouth played a mixture of songs from their new album Salt, the prior EP, and revisited old favorites from its self-titled album and The Holy Open Secret. The band rattled the crowd when they stomped out “Watch Your Mouth” with its harsh vocal chorus, while shortly after massaging the masses eardrums with “Roll, Brandywine, Roll”. With a solid two-song encore, Hoots and Hellmouth wanted to end the night “the way we end it on the new disc,” said Sean Hoots. “Being Borned Again” closed the evening, while the band ended the tune in a tranquil side-to-side sway, disoriented claps and hand-grasps to the rhythmic denouement, and soaked in the success of their celebration for the new album. Mahogany plays The Deli’s “Dream Pop” CMJ Show, Tue 10.18 at The Delancey with Exitmusic and more

Posted on:

Playing a shoegazer-influenced style they call "Nüdisco", Vltrarock and Echo Deco of the New York and Philadelphia based band Mahogany present a decade of recorded work as evidence. On "One Plus One Equals Three Or More" (one of our favorite songs) an angular bass line drives forward the momentum, as high-hat and snare-heavy percussions rattle along. Distant atmospherics soon work their way into the mix, as do handclaps and quickly strummed high-pitched guitars. The sum effect is one of a hyper funkiness. Vocals are delivered in a mostly male only or blended male-female tandem. "The View From The People Wall" continues the hyper-funk bass guitar with cymbal-emphasized percussion pattern, but features female vocals out front, while "Supervitesse" (embedded video) marshalls the formidable power of Cocteau Twins legend Robin Guthrie on the production chair for a predictably shimmering mix. – Mahogany will be performing at The Deli’s Dream Pop CMJ stage at The Delancey on Tuesday 10.18 with Exitmusic, Ohnomoon and Spanish Prisoners. – Dave Cromwell

Free Victorian Dining Room Series w/Psalmships at North Star Bar Sept. 26

Posted on:

Self-proclaimed and aptly named “ghost folk” outfit Psalmships will be headlining the free Victorian Dining Room Series at the North Star tonight. Though mastermind Josh Britton may prefer the stillness of the night and loneliness of his own room to lay down the creaky intimacy of his music, the baritone timbre of his earnest vocals can surely awaken any old spirits that may still linger in the 125 year old dining hall or at least pull the silenced crowd into his introspective world of loss and redemption which is often served with a chaser of whiskey.
